Did Trump even have the slightest idea he was being investigated?

Considering how chummy he originally was with Comey, I'd say this blindsided him.

The WH administration is a mess. I think their assumption was because of Comey's involvement in Hillary's emails, that he would be loyal to the Republican administration like those who are trying to deflect the issue.

Comey's plan all along guys, getting on
Trump's good side just to dispose of him later.

I think it's safe to say everyone friendly with Trump was likely kept in the dark during the briefings last week, and he probably had assurances from his allies that the "leak" line would be screamed loud enough to drown out the collusion claims.

I think this definitely blindsided him. I bet he was expecting the news to be all about his bullshit wiretap claims and the leaks.

Overall, are you guys feeling more optimistic after this hearing than you were before? As far as this investigation being taken seriously i mean.

More optimistic, but after seeing how evidently compromised the GOP seems to be, I wouldn't be surprised if the FBI stretches out this investigation until after 2018, or even 2020.

People forget he was more or less forced to come out about the email because if he didn't other FBI officials would have and they would of made a point to make it seem like he was trying to hide that information. He got his arm twisted but he recovered relatively quickly.

This is kind of what I'm suspecting is going to happen too, especially now that it's out there that the feds are investigating all of this. People will start ratting in order to save their own skins.
Suddenly trumps obsession with loyalty doesn't look so misplaced lol

Yeah, I feel good about it, but I'm weary that if we don't get that private investigator it could go tits up. More importantly, what's your impression?

I'm still worried about Republicans doing their best to stop the investigation or switching the focus from Russia ties to unmasking the leakers.

Judging from the comments from virtually every Republican at today's hearing, this really needs an independent investigation.

It's legitimately terrifying in a way that nothing else in my life has been. Like, if they get their way, then that means anything goes in the future. Actual democracy would pretty much be lost at that point.

Just unreal that people still value their party "winning" over the actual presidency literally being propped up by the Russian oligarchy. Much scarier than any war I could imagine.

More optimistic, still grounded.

Make no mistake, the ultimate impeachment of Donald Trump remains a tall order that's still probably years away from happening if it has any chance at all.

But what remains more in the grasp of this investigation is people all around Trump's campaign and White House getting implicated, indicted, questioned, and future consequences such as resignations or even convictions awaiting them. And some will inevitably start talking if leniency is offered, dragging others around Trump into the mud.

By 2018 and 2020, even if Trump is still occupying the White House without imminent impeachment, people around him falling one by one will ensure that this story stays relevant, newsworthy, and in the public consciousness. And that would put a damper on the GOP.

Republican voters don't value Democracy, and their elected officials will never stand up for it.

This I think is the main thing to be optimistic about from today's panel. I still stand by that it'll take really hard, solid proof to get a congress about impeachment, but at least this shows this isn't a story getting buried.

And there is no bigger rat than Roger Stone. He's the easiest to nail judging by the trail of self-incriminating shit he has done/said. Take this guy in for questioning and he will ratfuck evetyone. In fact he proudly calls himself a ratfucker.

Let's recall his connection to the 2000 election theft as well. Guy is dirty as fuck.

I'm not saying this to be a dick, but I wonder how old you are. People were saying the same thing about the lack of WMDs in Iraq sinking GWB's chances of a second term. Think about that. A president started a war that he sent Americans to die in under false pretenses and still got elected to a second term.

Do not underestimate the justifications people will use to vote on party lines once they get to the damn poll both.

I hope Trump gets impeached but people asking for jail time are way off. Even if it's all proven true, the republican president that replaces him will give him a pardon on his first day in office.

I wonder how supporters of Sanders feel listening to Castro's questioning that they were being used to swing votes or to be eliminated altogether away from Hilary

Not "Bernie Bros" fault the way that Clinton has run her last two campaigns in a disastrous and frankly disgusting fashion. (Starting the birther crap, basically blaming Bernie for Sandy Hook)

Not to mention data showing that his supporters voted for her at a higher rate than Clinton supporters answered in polls saying they would vote for him.

Also not to mention many of this group are people who would usually either vote 3rd party or not vote at all due to being unhappy with both options.

Keep blaming them though. It's everyone's fault besides the comically bad campaign.

A good degree of that can be ascribed to residual support for "The Commander In Chief" following 9/11. I don't think the parallels between Bush's reelection and Trump's upcoming one are overwhelmingly strong, no matter how often it's said that Republicans fall in line. For one thing as of today we're just two months into this four year presidency, and look at where we are? High profile resignations, an Attorney General ducking allegations of perjury, and confirmation that the president's campaign is under FBI investigation in the neighborhood of treason. That's a full plate.

But, should this Russian investigation maintain its level of steam steadily over the next few years, I think the trend to watch for 2020 isn't so much scores of Republican voters defecting towards Democrats, but disillusion and fatigue from years of investigations and high-level indictments dampening enthusiasm among many GOP voters outside of the MAGA hat-wearing base.

Any president who's win was by margins as narrow as Trump's isn't going to be immune to approval ratings and enthusiasm plummeting.

It's all just a matter of finding the right string to pull at to unravel it all and my god it looks like they have plenty of strings to pull at. Let's not forget that the media will play a massive part in this. If journalists start looking into this and uncovering this and putting it out into the public there will no choice but to act on whatever is found, they can't keep it behind closed doors forever.

Rush Limbaugh's "reasonings" in this matter are amazing. He is trying to link the idea of any sort of surveillance on trump or the campaign is because of political reason from the Obama admin during campaign. But he can't fully just come out and say it because he wasn't wire tapped. So hes setting the stage, again, of any sort of surveillance on Trump supporters not on grounds of importance because it was "political".

The Obama thing makes no sense, if he had fancy president only wiretaps he would have leaked the good dirt pre election.

Based on the hearing, it's evident that Comey believed along with everyone else that Hillary would win the election no matter what. I gotta wonder if that impacted his decision to write that letter, though of course he'd never own up to it even if it did.

Question..

Does this make it more likely that Trump's taxes could be accessed?

Now that there's an official investigation confirmation, surely it's just a matter of time?

I missed a lot of this, did they question him why he commented on the emails at that specific moment in time during the election?

It was always due to the combination of

- Chaffetz leaking Comey's email
- Bill Clinton meeting with Lynch made the FBI look bad
- If Comey was silent the FBI would look even worse

Anything beyond that is just sour grapes/conspiracy theories/grasping at straws.

I'd like to think that the FBI already has this information as part of their investigation. Whether that stuff is ever made public is another question entirely.

Well I mean the FBI might subpoena the tax returns but that won't be made public. For all we know they've already been subpoenaed and they're looking over them now.

I like to imagine Martin Sheen playing President Trump in a West Wing reboot shouting I AM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, GIVE ME BACK MY PHONE

Why imagine? Would look something like this, just exchange the nuclear football for his phone.

I should have clarified. Released to the public. I'd say they're hardly doing their jobs if they didn't get access behind the scenes (FBI).

So, if I'm reading this right, nothing huge came out of this except for the fact that there is an investigation into Trump, which we already knew? Now it's just public?

It gets people on the record about whats currently known, restates a lot of the details in a wider public forum outside of the media's reporting, and got Comey to make his views on the wire-tapping allegations publicly.

I am curious about what comes next though.

People were expecting Comey to just say he can't comment. He specifically stated that they're looking into whether or not Trump/admin cooperated with Russia and that the public deserves to know it.

That's a huge difference and now there's a dark cloud over the admin.
