I have no idea why so Japanese fictions gets off so much on destiny shit. Especially when they make the main characters special because their parents are special.

My Hero Academia's the only recent battle shounen I can think of that totally avoids it.

Shippuden's voice acting in general is subpar, but there are a few performances I like. Troy Baker Pain is good, and I've alway been a fan of Wittenberg.

...Main Character is given a power passed down through the ages. It's just a different type of destiny.

i think the konoha 12 do good jobs in general,
i think stephanie sheh does a very good job on the hinata confession.

I don't mind this so much if it doesn't give the son to much of a boost like Luffy.

Ichigo literally has all the powers in the world because of his parents.

I'm speaking from manga knowledge.

But it makes sense in My Hero Academia because the main character is chosen by a person because of his personal traits, not because of literal destiny.

I don't find TG as annoying, honestly. The explanation that a lot of it is off from it's source material is fine, and it doesn't seem as confused for what it wants to be. It's judged pretty fairly.

With HxH, it feels more like "We've seen the future, so this is tolerable!" blinders. Which is fine, I obviously enjoy Gundam more because what it references means something to me, surely more than HxH. Plus the show is held as one in high regard, so that makes these weaknesses one feels week in and out much more glaring and agitating.

When someone brings up something, does that not potentially make a fan say "huh, that is kinda lame!". It's less a desire to rile anyone up, and more just a "am I really alone in feeling this?" question.

Speaking as someone who hasn't really seen any of these shows until a few months ago, I think the big difference between something like HxH and Unicorn is that Unicorn assums I have this deep rooted and large understanding of Gundam's lore, while HxH doesn't.

I jumped in during the middle of the York New city arc and knew what was going on basically as well as anyone after two episodes. Meanwhile, I've been watching Unicorn every Saturday for two months (with a few exceptions), and I still have no idea what the fuck is going on. It's extremely offputting, and I feel like it gives me no reason to care. That's indicative, to me, of bad writing, as it gives nobody but previous fans a reason to be invested in the show and characters.

I'm fairly certain I've said so in a previous post as well.

Wasn't able to watch Unicorn live, so finished with a recording just now. Yeah, like I didn't have enough reasons to be on the "FUCK RIDDHE" train as it was...

Viz dubs in general have been mostly serviceable, but mediocre to me. They have been impressing me lately though, with shows like HxH and OPM.

Hunter x Hunter? Ging is definitely talented, but there hasn't been much of what I'd call Destiny. Gon certainly hasn't inherited anything special from Ging. He just has a simple goal, and the world doesn't give a shit about him.

One Piece kinda lost me when it was revealed that

Luffy's Straw Hat was once Gol D Roger's

Still the only of the big 3 that I like/love at times

Yeah, as someone else said, the core main characters are good enough (except naruto), and most are pretty established VAs. There are some, like Shikamaru, who have pretty much never voiced anyone else but I think does a good job.

A good lot of secondary characters are iffy though.

This is hardly unique to Japanese fiction. I recently rewatched The Mummy Returns for instance, and while I remembered that Evelyn was revealed to be the reincarnation of the pharaoh's daughter, I had completely forgotten that they also randomly made Rick a hero foretold by prophecy too. Tons of things have destiny for no reason.

Even One Piece is starting to get into the idea that Luffy is destined and special and crap, though.

Fair point.

at least it's not "as the prophecy for told", though probably on the same level as "destiny"

...hmm, no idea what this episode was about

I still have no idea why they decided to have the intro be bad CGI, but the intro song is fucking dope as shit, so it's cool.

There's a certain dramatic moment in GitS that I recall very clearly, but I don't remember much about the episode it's in or even if it's this season. I know that's vague, but I always wonder if it's going to catch me by surprise.

Not like Naurto.

People like Shanks view Luffy attitude and way of thinking just like Rogers.

Luffy isn't destined to become the King and he won't be exactly like Roger.

Lufy most special trait is
king haki and voice of all things. Even so there are at least others in the verse like him with those abilities. Helps no real official explanation for stuff the makes Luffy special.

Most of Luffy powers are earned.

white robot blood is creepy

tachikoma philosophy!

"please stop wasting my time with obvious lies!"

I don't count HxH as recent, heh. But yeah it mostly avoids it, though Gon's inherent ability is still a bit silly. Though Togashi does play around with it.

"sub-turing machine" doesn't that mean it's not even a full computer?

It's not as bad as Naruto's, but I mean
the stuff about Luffy's ability to hear the "voice of all things" and the Joy Boy prophecy stuff.

Heh, that's a nice little call back with the "natural oil".

I'm glad I actually noticed it this time around.

Edit: OMG IT'S KAIRI FROM DIGIMON

I admit to having first read Flowers for Algernon thanks to this episode. Quite liked it.

Not having seen Digimon, I remember that Tachikoma best as Scheris from Scryed.
