"So in the original series, Light was a very calculating person who made sure nobody could follow his tracks, & he did it because he felt the world needed to be rid of criminals, feeding into his god complex & manipulating people to help him"

"AMERICANS CAN'T ASSOCIATE WITH SMART PEOPLE LIKE THAT, MAKE HIM DUMB & SYMPATHETIC BECAUSE PEOPLE PUSHED HIM TO DO IT"

Didn't they make Light an emo loser or something? Anime Light was part of the social elite.

From what I heard, yeah. & Mia plays a bigger role, instead of being a ditzy blonde who was easily manipulated by Light to help him kill people, was made a bit more smart, but is also the one that pushes/motivates him into writing more names into the Death Note, meaning Light's original character is pretty much gone because they made it so other people became his motivation.

Mia while a wasted potential that could have been interesting also fuck this movie because they had to spread thin with the running time, made Light a weaker character and kinda screw with the absolve some of the moral conflict
by making light the good kira

It's more complicated than that

Essentially they split Kira into Mia/Misa and Light. A lot of the movie is about their relationship with Light focusing on trying to kill criminals and they don't really go beyond the surface with ethics of that. Mia is the one trying to push to use to kill cops and other fucked up shit and is more like Kira or at least his shirty parts. So instead of one somewhat complex and interesting character essentially you get two shallow characters with being one stock outsider hero and one wasted potential

Uuuggghhhhh, so they simplified it into "black & white" then.

Damn it, why did I feel like there was hope this'd be one of the few good, let alone acceptable adaptations?

Well, time to wait & see what anime/manga Hollywood will screw up next.

So...Kira is the new Griffith?

Spoilers for an old ass show that's technically already in the Adult Swim/TOONAMI family.

Kira has a god complex and writes down the name of every mobster/violent criminal in jail, then tells the world that if you can prove someone is a criminal in his eyes he'll kill them. So he watches tv/reads internet forums and the like and just keeps killing them. All for his perfect world. He also does the same to anyone who makes him for the killer unless he can trick them in some convoluted manner into believing he's not Kira. So he's always been both the bad guy and someone who probably made the world a better place by killing all of the known mobsters and rapists and murderers. He's still an unbelievable asshole though.

It made him a favorite of edgy teens and people who think Punisher is 100% right

Ok, I'm starting to think they really wanted these comedic scenes to be taken seriously.

.......................................wait..............................did...they just ended this movie like Castlevania!?

fffffffffffFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Ok, dust settled: FUCK. THIS. MOVIE

lIKE, besides the simplification and butchering of what this franchise was trying to say, just how the fuck some scenes depicted these characters is like borderline amateur hour and somehow thought it could be '90s passive aggressive coolness without knowing how that shit worked to begin with.

How were the visuals? I heard those were pretty good, but I haven't checked.

Would explain why the trailers looked fine.

It mostly looks like an major motion picture. Read that the 2nd Unit Director made Hobo with a Shotgun so half the movie looks and sounds like an '80s hard beat cop flick. No orchestra, just dread and synths. But yeah: everything about this flick is all over the place.
