Alabama bans the removal of Confederate monuments

no history is being purged, just purging the idolization of a figure who fought for immoral values, that contradict your founding values, and represented a torn nation.

Dude, it was Australia, and the game was invented by Gaborn (RIP) in this thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305487

Granted, it was a twist on the old Love Line game "Germany or Florida," but Gaborn read and posted a lot of weird news, and noticed a weird trend in Australian weird news at the time, and decided to add it.

It was Austrian news that was the trend. And in the same thread I posted which predates Gaborn's (RIP), they comment on the meme of GAF confusing Australia and Austria in Austrian threads.

And here's one with Gaborn (RIP) responding to the "correction" as a bonus:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13075283&postcount=19

That said...

In summation, G/A/F has always been, and will always be "Germany/Australia/Florida" on this forum.

...I'll leave this alone and move on.

EDIT: Or I should have just found this post earlier: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=16202653&postcount=11

Motherfuckers, they were REBELS. They no longer wanted to be part of the United States. If citizens and lawmakers want to take it down, take it down! Why should citizens of this country be forced to suffer foreign propaganda in their public spaces?

Confederates broke from the country. We're not erasing *our* history, because by the confederates' own actions they no longer were part of our history in the first place. They wanted their own, made their own, and ended their own in unconditional surrender. Time to put the relics of fallen civilization into a museum where it belongs.

Did you read the OP? The problem here is the opposite. Citizens and Lawmakers do not want to take it down, even though it should be taken down regardless of what the majority of Alabamians (?) think.

The correct response to this is to ninja-attach additions and plaques all over the existing Confederate monuments in the state that highlight the suffering of slaves under Confederate rule and the surrender of tattered Confederates to a victorious Union.

After all, they'll now be illegal to take down.

Question from a Canadian;

Why do I always hear people saying Florida Is the worst, but most Florida news articles seem to be wacky and just bizzare.

But whenever I read something about Alabama, it's just seething with pure evil and hatred.

They wouldn't be older than 40 years old.

I was referencing the other people in the state and country that do want the stuff down.

By a large number of metrics Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi are the worst preforming states in the country. Florida just has wacky stories because they are all released publicly.

I meant the other people in the state and country that do want the stuff down.

I'd agree, but that's a fundamentally different argument.

Because Reconstruction was sabotaged in order to woo Southern states back into the fold of regular governance, because white northerners didn't live as black men in the South and realize how desperately total uprooting of its racial ideologies was needed, and considered orderliness preferable.

The Confederacy should have been treated like post-World War 2 Japan, occupied until they agreed to act like non-savages and demonstrated this change would stick. It is one of the great failures in world history of a government to its citizens that this was sabotaged. Fuckin' Johnson!

Given that Johnson was largely continuing the same policies Lincoln was propagating (though I highly doubt Lincoln would have vetoed the 14th), I don't think he was the ultimate reason for the long-term failure of Reconstruction to redress the racial legacy of slavery. Even among the Republicans there wasn't sufficient political will to sustain Reconstruction, especially after Stevens' death. It was a group fumble.

I'm not following. Maybe my first post was poorly constructed.

My argument is that there are two groups of lawmakers and citizens here: one group of assholes who want the monuments to remain and have passed legislature to force that and another group that wants the monuments gone and have been successful in removing some in multiple states. Due to the Confederacy's own actions and intentions monuments to them are symbols of oppression and foreign propaganda, meaning that the first group's reasonings for preemptively legislating against the second group are weak and the second group is in the right and should be favored.

Where is the disagreement?

Wouldn't have worked. The South was too racist to its core. Nothing short of completely depopulating the South and giving it entirely to the slaves would have worked. And there were some guys like Hannibal Hamlin that IIRC considered that option.

Note: Depopulation meaning exile, though I think some wanted what first comes to mind.

I saw a news story today about a history museum here in Georgia that had a bunch of Union and Confederate stuff that closed down. The museum claimed it was due to the county commissioner trying to force them to take down any and all Confederate flags at the museum.

Link please.

It was a generational project, could potentially have worked with 2-3 decades of continuous occupation, vigorous restriction of organizations like the Klan, and seeding of abolitionist Northerners into the populace, but the political will simply was not there as healing the country was seen as more important.

Shame, as it allowed the ridiculous "Lost Cause" narrative to solidify into 140 subsequent years of varying levels of awful for the South's citizens of color, an ethos that now appears to be metastasizing into the entirety of rural America.

”Where does it end? Are all parts of American history subject to purging, until every Ivy League professor is satisfied and the American story has been re-written as nothing but a complete fraud and a betrayal of our founding values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?" Allen said.

As long as you are a straight white male.

Seriously, a betrayal? Not celebrating historic racism is PROMOTING our values of life and liberty for all regardless of who you are and happiness for those who want and work for it in equal measure.

I've seen posts circulating on Facebook on since Confederate staues are being removed, MLK statues should as well.

Where do people even begin to find that a suitable comparison?

So everything that the Confederacy embodied, then?

Pathetic clinging to a pathetic legacy.

I really do hope someone does something, but the outrage would be greater than when Hilary murdered innocents with her bare hands in BenjaminGossy

The simple answer is that they genuinely see it as a fair parallel: they "disapprove" of civil rights just as we "disapprove" of slavery.

Or in even simpler terms, they're just straight up racist. And the media can pontificate all it likes about why they are, but it doesn't retroactive change the words they say.

Being rascist is usually the starting point. People like that view black people as like the opposing side or something. If they start "giving in" to their demands, they'll want more! You know, being treated like human beings.

So, it has to be a give and take. They always have to have the upper hand. Power is incredibly hard to give up.

And Alabama, once again, on the wrong side of history. Fuck that state.

Civil Rights "era" wasn't really that long ago.

Racists going out of their way to prove how big of snowflakes they are about their racist memorabilia and FREEDOM. School by me just renamed one of the buildings on campus after finding out the guy was a big segregationist. Hope the wave continues.

What's funny about this snowflake talk is that these people have convinced themselves that they're the tough patriots protecting this country from snowflakes. The mental gymnastics are really impressive.

The fact that they use MLK statues as their counter argument is pretty telling.

Nothing to do with race, though. Fucking morons.

That is a pretty damn good point. Their counter argument---if they are going to continue down the bullshit line of 'history is important and that is all this is'---probably shouldn't utilize MLK when they're trying to pretend this has nothing to do with race.

I certainly understand why people are posting it and where that part is coming from.

I guess I just can't comprehend where Civil Rights leader vs failed rebellion (especially from folks who a re such self-preservation Patriots to this country) makes sense.
