if Chris ever gets back to good health they can always redub the lines he missed
Unfortunately, with severe COPD, even if he makes a recovery, he's not going to be in a condition to return to voice acting any time soon, and likely never again.

So I watched the entirety of the first season of Stranger Things yesterday, not knowing that the second season will be coming out this October. I ended up really enjoying it. I'm surprised to see online that fans were hostile to Lucas though. I dunno, I was 100% on his side during that fight with Mike.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Nah the stranger thing of Stranger Things was the undying love of Barb.

The funniest thing to me about the DBS discussion topic, is that for all people say they want the show to be about more than power levels... they bring everything back down to it.

Even watching these early episodes of Super via Toonami hasn't been a waste. Our main arcs both subtly spit in the face of straight power levels, and are tagging things more onto energy control, stamina, teamwork, determination, self-sacrifice... they're seeding ideals that will set the foundation for the more original arcs.

Super really seems like it has fun with the challenge of proving things like why Master Roshi could still be called such, among a universe of much stronger beings, or how even Krillin can teach Goku a litany of lessons, even though Goku is stronger. I rather like how it seems to have a whole world / universal / extra-dimensional view of things, rather than acting like the entirety of existance revolves around what Goku does in Goku time when Goku speaks to Goku about what Goku did today, in the Gokua quadrant. They seem intent on expanding what fits into the DB body of works.

...So why does every after-episode conversation still bold down to "I can't believe that character is as strong as Goku's SSJB!"? *shrug*

Because that's all DBZ was about

Oh goodie the super thread is getting salty again

Oh, it's a day ending in 'y' again?

Nope spoilers from Japan for dragon ball super
people are whining about the u6 saiyans specifically the female ones being relevant and their faves being pushed into the background

I'm just happy to finally have CANON female Super Saiyans.

The power scaling went out the window the moment Roshi came back as a relevant fighter with the revival of f arc.

Yeah. Certainly not complaining about that. I like having more of the characters being fight relevant again. I hope that it continues.

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Power levels are serious business.

I'm glad Jump series that followed didn't rely solely on punches and beams as powers
Devil Fruits, Stands, Nen, Quirks, allowing for more versatile techniques and less "power level" horseshit.
Except Gold Experience Requiem, that's too bullshit

Team Dai Gurren would fuck up those DBZ losers anyway. Power levels ain't got anything on spiral energy

Dragon Ball Z was extremely formative to a lot of people.

Yup, so much so it even shows up in other professionals works now. It's still surreal to me to listen to a casual conversation on The Amazing World of Gumball start with "I'm still trying to become a Super Saiyan!"

Because that's all DBZ was about

Eh, mostly, yeah. But there's been 100 episodes of super to get them out of what DBZ did, and into what DBS does. You'd think all the promo art that has background characters on equal footing and hype as Vegeta and Goku would have seeped in by now.

The power scaling went out the window the moment Roshi came back as a relevant fighter with the revival of f arc.

I really love the "Everyone VS Frieza's army" moment of ResF. Instead of speed punches and too-fast-for-me-to-see, how'd-you-do warping, there were actual stances, a variety of blows, and TACTICS happening! It didn't feel like much we see in Late-era DBZ, and I was pretty happy with that.

Nothing is more bullshit than
Gold Experience Requiem, it's even more bullshit than the world renowned meme stand.

i haven't actually watched any of Super after what's on the block but i guess the mentality i have at this point is that, whether it makes sense or not, it's just more interesting to use the supporting cast

The power scale went out the window when Goku drank magic water and was magically stronger than Tao Pai Pai

Hey now, he became stronger than Tao Pai Pai because he climbed the tower and did chase training with Korin. The water wasn't even magic!

...until King Piccolo comes along and it turns out Korin actually did have magic water that made Goku stronger.

Zonic

Gives all the fucks
What does it even mean to become "stronger" in the DBZ universe?

What actually changes about the characters that indicate they're more powerful aside from their hair color or a different form?

What makes one character's beam more powerful than another's?

It means you're just strong enough to beat the person you're fighting at the moment, but not the guy after him.

I have never, ever, been a fan of power leveling. It is, in my opinion, the absolute lazest way to have a fight possible. Fights in fiction, and especially in animation should be about skill, technique, experience, teamwork (when applicable), strategy, speed, and power, all together.

To ignore all everything else that makes a fight good and just focus on power and how hard someone tries to win is to make a fight incredibly boring. There is nothing to hold my attention, nothing to surprise me, and nothing to come out of left field to make me say "wow".

To give a recent example, Kurapika vs. Uvogin was a good fight encompassing several different elements that I had listed above. I certainly had my problems with the fight. I wasn't a fan of the extended monologuing by both parties, and I thought Kurapika was a bit too powerful when dealing with the troupe. But what made the fight good in spite of that was how they built up Uvogin and the Troupe as a whole as being these totally unstoppable badasses. The viewer went in expecting a close fight, but it ended up being a total curbstomp because of the way Uvo's weaknesses (specifically his overconfidence and over reliance on brute strength) were played against him.

In a power leveling contest, Uvogin could out muster pretty much everyone. But because HxH is a universe in which power is not the sole way that a victory can be achieved, it didn't matter. It's a sign of a well designed (if flawed in other ways) fight.

Super has done a slightly better job at removing power leveling compared to DBZ, but not a good enough job. The two biggest fights thus far (that I have seen), Goku vs. Beerus and Goku vs. Frieza have been about who could train harder, who could get more motivated, and ultimately who could be more powerful. They were also animated poorly, but even with good animation, I would still be bored compared to even a poorly animated fight that was well thought out.
