My company sent a notice to our drivers about the gas situation. Would suck if most of our truck drivers can't work for a few days.

Seriously though, they don't have buses running?

Dfw doesn't have a serious public transportation system. If you don't have a car you may literally starve or not be able to work in some areas outside the inner city. If there's no gas it could trip our economy. People can't go anywhere without cars here.

There's no chicken or beef anywhere ;(

Restaurants are full of lines and they are even low on stock that some menu items are not even available for purchase.

Never knew I would experience something like this in 2017 in one of the biggest cities in the US.

People in Sugar Land saying Costco has gas . Probably still need membership card. Gonna take my mom's membership card and go for it lol

You better hurry up because even on a normal day that Costco is ridiculously crowded as fuck because the street going into it is so narrow.

Places in San Antonio are running out as well. Shit getting scary. I'm in Del Rio for work and I hope a few places have gas when i get back.

Yeah I'm in northwest SA and I just slipped out to try and get some; HEB--pumps had at least a 30-45 minute wait. Fuck that. Might try again later tonight. Wonder if it's safer to pump at night? Situations like these, you figure people actually get popped/shot for some gas?

My boss told me that they are expecting stations to be out by 5pm.

Don't we (the US) have a shitload of gas reserves? Time to bust it out?

We do. The problem's distribution, not supply.

http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/texas-news/texas-commissioner-dont-panic-about-gas/469658632

According to Sitton, the concerns started when refineries began shutting down along the Gulf Coast due to Hurricane Harvey. As news spread, so did concern over a potential shortage, leading to large rushes to stations.

Sitton says he understands the worry as people drive up to gas stations and see high prices, long lines and red bags covering gas pumps.

But here's why this is happening, the commissioner says:

• Rumors spread of shortage, spurring rush to gas stations

• Gas stations see higher demand than usual

• Stations run out of gas at a high rate due to demand

• Station owners become concerned about supply, raise prices

• So many stations run out of gas it takes longer to resupply

The railroad commissioner is denying the gas shortage that is already happening.

The US' strategic petroleum reserve is designed to allow military operations in the country to continue in the event of a nuclear war and we couldn't produce more for some time. I think the goal is 1 year, and in theory that's ~1 month of normal consumption for the entire country. It's not meant for distribution to commuters and cannot be moved around quickly. Little if any is gasoline, as a bonus problem.

I live about 3-4 miles north of the city line in north-central SA and the two gas stations by my house were all sold out. The Exxon had a huge line for the diesel pump which was the only one still going.

Really glad I filled up both of my vehicles in the last 2 days.

Dallas has sufficiently freaked out over the gas thing. Not sure if they were low or if panic set in and people ran to get gas, causing the shortage.

How can a metro area of 10+ million people have such bad transit options? It blows my mind. Car-centric city design is the worst. It leads to such ugly cities too. Endless parking lots everywhere you go.

Funny story that. Dallas had a great public transportation back in the 1940s 1950s until it was decided that the way of the future is going to be through the freedom of automobiles. So they ripped up pretty much all the trolley tracks/light rail they ripped up All the old buses and what not and started building highways because that was the way the future. That and Colonies on the moon

I know. The secret is to exit through the back of the parking lot thats on the right side of the building. Bit of a slow drive to get there but worth it when there's 50 cars trying to exit back into the feeder lol

Doesn't help when people in cities like Arlington, in the middle of the metroplex, willfully vote against public transport bonds consistently. Blew my mind the first time I visited there & couldn't get around without someone driving me.

Yup...looking at some old pictures of Dallas and Fort Worth, it was really cool.

Houston as well.

The problem is with the US as a whole.

This country has alot of areas... And I mean ALOT that force you to rely on a vehicle for transportation. It's completely fucked because not having a car could possibly send you right back to the bottom of the social class.

I know because I lost my car earlier this year in an accident and I'm in Richmond, VA. Could have lost fucking everything if I wasn't able to get to work

Panic would only cause a brief shortage, but it's getting worse. Refineries are shut down this isn't imaginary.

Where did you think gas came from. Most of the TX coast refineries were hit and it's not like we can teleport West coast gas here.

HAHAHAHA, this make me legit lol.

Truly, anyone that says anything about a Houston evacuation is absolutely showing their ass in terms of how public safety works. Perhaps an evacuation of Galveston County and the low lying Southeast counties? Maybe. They have done that before and it worked out okay.

But a full scale Houston evacuation? Fucking please. They tried that in Rita and it was a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

Not sure why everyone WANTS it to be imaginary.

We need to re-evaluate how our life is so dependent on the oil and gas industry.

That's a large part of it. The other part is that we have shifted our economy to run on just-in-time deliveries. It's a triumph of our computerized logistics, but it leaves us pretty exposed to disruption.

Yea I don't get it either.

Panic cleaned out grocery stores in Austin as the storm hit the coast but 2 days later everything was fully stocked because people didn't eat more per day and the supply chain was still there.

That was always one of my favorite things about Houston. It still pissed me off to this day when I'm in SF and need to park. Being able to just pull in and park anywhere you go without needing a goddamn act of God helping you out is an amazing QoL upgrade.

On the other hand, given the obvious consequences, perhaps it's worth rethinking
