This is probably a winner for Trump (or a net neutral) because the racism is just thinly veiled enough to give his supporters cover. You'd be surprised (or not lol) how many white suburbanites can't stand the whole Kaepernick protest. Still fucking disgusting.

His supporters will support him no matter what. Nobody cares if they like what Trump said.

He's causing organizations to come out and back their players, sponsors are backing players, and basically turning the NFL into a political organization, which people are not going to enjoy since sports are what people pay attention to, to get away from politics.

SI MLB @si_mlb
A's catcher Bruce Maxwell becomes the first MLB player to kneel for the national anthem.

Bruce T Maxwell @bruu_truu13
This now has gone from just a BlackLives Matter topic to just complete inequality of any man or woman that wants to stand for Their rights!

Which NFL organizations have defended their players? I only saw the Dolphins and 49ers.

I don't see any of the explicitly conservative ones (i.e. Kraft, Jones, etc.) doing anything they otherwise wouldn't do.

so much for "the centrists" unwavering support of peaceful protests

what could be more peaceful than just kneeling

oh, right, what they mean when they say "peaceful protest" is "not visible"

Trump: "Fuck the NFL"

Here's the problem, though. I have found a lot of NFL fans to be incredibly racist and against Kaepernick.

So sports, business, his own party, the fucking Pope.... Who is left for Trump to rage at?!?

Nazis
Russia
Turkey

All the better for this incident to force a wedge between the NFL and its more deplorable fans. Tell the racists that there's no-one they're allowed to like. Nothing they're allowed to enjoy. Nothing that "respects" their awful views. They are social outcasts.

Yup. The NFL is a very conservative institution

It would be pretty amusing if Trump inadvertently sparked an NFL boycott and causes the ratings to tank even further though.

I suspect that Collins will be on Tapper tomorrow to announce her opposition to Graham-Cassidy. She has already gone on CNN quite a few times in the past year, and will likely use this to make a further pitch for her expected Governorship bid. I refuse to believe a wonk like Collins could ever seriously consider voting for a bill this structurally terrible with such deep cuts.

This weekend is a turning point for young people who don't pay attention to politics.

It's much bigger than most of the short-term news discussed in this thread.

That's a good thing, it means Kaep is pissing people off. The NFL is much more conservative and apolitical than, say, the NBA, and that should change.

People are already mad at the drop in NFL quality play. Let's see if owners can keep blacklisting talent and playing Jay Cutlers instead. Force the to choose, and force the viewers to pay attention.

I'm still in shock he did things like this more than once, it's been deduced, become widely known, and yet he wasn't laughed out of and ejected from the business world (or the planet for that matter).

How many times have there been reports on this fictitious "Barron" persona?

I bet half of Trump's passwords and handles use the name Barron, even his kid is named after his pseudonym.

So for a little more context to this. Bruce Maxwell was born on a military base, his father is a career Army man, and he's white. The anti-Kaepernick because he's "disrespecting the military" crowd has to be so confused right now.

Edit: I screwed up on saying that he’s white, when he is African-American. Got burned by believing the first thing I read and not checking a second source.

Whats wrong with Jay Cutler?

They're not confused. That talking point never came from a place of sincerity. They'll find some other reason to rationalize their disapproval without having to admit it's racism.

Magically, tomorrow is now "Gold Star Family" Day at Trumps request! The pettiness knows no bounds.

Not that I’m the arbiter of whiteness, but I doubt the average Kaepernick hater (read: racist) would consider maxwell “white”.

Edit:
Gold star families are the best! except those Khans!

Just want to point out that a google search says Gold Star Mother’s Day has been observed the last Sunday of September every year since 1936. Pretty horrible timing, but this being about veterans is a smokescreen to begin with.

I was inclined to agree with the 'Trump playing culture wars is ultimately beneficial to him politically' line after August but I have to wonder if this doesn't have the potential to blow up in his face. He risks people viewing him as instigating the further politicization of sports, even the people who agree with him would rather not be having this conversation in the first place. All the coverage of people like Bruce Maxwell is going to be done in the context of Trump provoking the outrage; I'm not so sure this isn't a fuck up politically (obviously it is one morally).

Great response to trumps earlier tweet in progress

Hi sorry to interrupt your dot dot dot but the American citizens of Puerto Rico don't have electricity or drinking water.

Yeah, like trump cares about the brown people of Puerto Rico. Probably thinks it’s another country.

Whats wrong with Jay Cutler?

Should probably reference the Colts' QBs or Blake Bortles instead, Cutler is largely fine.

He has a job currently when he's (by his own admission) over the hill. Nothing against the guy a few years ago, but I'd play someone else (Tannehill injury, notwithstanding).

We have got to get rid of territory status and make them all states.

About a week ago I was posted for a job out in the sticks, and I was somewhat confused why a couple of people were randomly bringing up Kim Jong Un with this goofy nickname.

Conservative identity politics are so befuddling and so, so original.

Just read the WaPo piece on conservative single women looking for love. Feel like I want to replace every one of these post-election, "what are these Trump supporters like" thinkpieces with this gif from Blazing Saddles:

I’m afraid to read this...

Michelle gets offended when people “assassinate his character,” as she put it, by calling Trump racist, sexist or homophobic — or by saying that he never would’ve made it without a loan from his dad. “I just can’t be with somebody who’s closed-minded like that,” she said. “They’re believing all those labels that are just political propaganda. I can’t be with somebody that just listens to tabloids or nightly news, because there’s a lot of hate being promoted.”

The irony is thick. Bet she only reads Breitbart.

only 29% of white people have a favorable view of Kaepernick which is fucking crazy

wonder how many of these people also complain about black activists being too easily offended?

I wonder how many takes that took, because Little looks like he's about to lose it the entire time.
