Cross The Line - Sexual Assault... ok, maybe just Sexual Harassment!

That there exist worse things in the world does not make any news about this event less relevant.

And considering that places like Kotaku are general gaming websites it's not shocking that they would not spend time covering every little neat thing that happens in the fighting game community.

They cover things that they think people outside genre-specific communities might find of interest.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure Kotaku has covered positive stories about the FGC in the past. Thing is, people are more prone to remembering the negatives over the positives. It's just human nature, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.

Or to stroke their own egos by painting people they don't know as bigots, apologists and numbskulls with broad strokes and almost no tact, while invoking absolute moral superiority to boot. That happens too.

tell me about it :(

Wolfkrone is the most introverted dude in the scene and gives shoutouts to God after winning tournaments.

He'll be fine.

Some on this forum would consider that even more offensive

Toss in omg dude THAT'S SEXUAL HARASSMENT CANT TALK ABOUT THAT STUFF!!!! while laughing and ya that's the gist of it

oh this is offensive then, because no one has ever made jokes to alleviate a negative vibe around an upsetting issue. Never. It's always just insensitivity.

I'm non-religious myself, but even I don't have a problem with people expressing their religious beliefs in that way.

So, I can't imagine there are a whole ton of people who find that more offensive than the other things that happened---which all is, of course, besides the point.

It's off topic and directed towards nobody on (this side) of the forum anyways, don't even think much of it.

Even under normal circumstances, one must take great care when making a joke about these issues, but these are not normal circumstances, and navigating both when making this kind of joke requires a fairly deft touch.

If you know anything about Marn, you'd know that "deft touch" is not ever a phrase that's been said in relation to Marn.

Level|Up's response to the comments made on Wednesday Night Fights from yesterday:

Last night on Wednesday Night Fights (2/29/2012), remarks were said by community commentators that alluded to recent events involving the Fighting Game Community (FGC) and the sexual harassment controversy that surrounds it. From time to time, members of the community will come onto our broadcast to provide match analysis and commentary. These remarks do not reflect the views and opinions of Level | Up or our affiliates, partners, and/or sponsors. It is not Level | Up’s intention to make light of sexual harassment nor do we condone it. Level | Up and its staff feel harassment of any form is wrong and that everyone should be treated respectfully.

The community commentators involved express their sincerest apologies for anything they may have said including releasing a statement themselves about the matter:

“I just wanted to say, my views and personal opinions of do not reflect Level | Up, EVO, SRK or the fighting game community and any company in any way. A lot of people know me as the nice but joking guy who doesn’t have any bad intentions.
I love this community with all my heart, and I’ve poured a lot of what I could into this community. I understand now that is it a very heavy topic that should not be lightly talked about. I misjudged a lot of things yesterday and said things I definitely should not have. I have no excuses and I hope everyone looks past this and onto a bright future.” — Martin “Marn” Phan

“I want to personally apologize for any comments made during last night’s WNF session that may have offended anyone. These were not my intentions. Please understand that any and all things that I say are not at all the views of Level | Up, SRK, EVO, or any other Fighting Game organization. The FGC is the most professional, courteous, and open gaming organization I have ever been involved in, and I apologize if any of my comments have shown an outstanding community in any negative light. I am simply someone who offers my views and commentary on an occasional basis, and if anything I may have said was considered in bad taste, unprofessional, or offensive, I take full personal responsibility for what was said. Again, I sincerely apologize for anything that may have offended anyone; I was simply influenced by the moment, and it should not have happened.” — Christian “ETR” Cain

Marn and Christian will not be invited to speak on future Level | Up broadcasts, and are reviewing our selection process for guest commentators. Again, we sincerely apologize if anyone was offended by the remarks said on our recent broadcast. As a company founded by Fighting Game Community members, it is not our intention to paint the scene in this manner; instead we stand by our mission statement and will continue to focus on showcasing the scene in a positive manner — a scene that can be professional, inviting, and competitive.

Good (fucking slow) step. If you really think making light of sexual harassment on the day it breaks the news is appropriate, you don't get a mic.

It's ridiculous that it's taking so long for the public face of FGC to make common sense decisions, but hey. Progress. I don't think Aris needs to be punished severely, this laying of the groundwork for proper conduct is what the FGC needs instead.

Damn.

Marn's been an idiot far too many times for his punishment to be anything but. Twenty strikes your out in this case.

It happened last night. I think getting personal comments from the two involved and writing an article by mid-day the next day is nothing crazy in response to the Kotaku article that went out the same morning.

This is a great first step, and more of this is what I'd like to see. Own up to it, like they did, and actually do something to make it clear that certain things are not okay to say.

What I mean by that (going back to this post as well) is that it's a slow step for the FGC as a whole. I'm happy Level | Up is stepping up and doing it though.

I went back few pages in this thread. They were basically making light of the whole sexual harassment issue during a match. They censored themselves saying ass and laughed that it was inappropriate. Then I guess there was a shot of the Nos girls posted on stream and they were commenting which one was hot. Geez, it seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot.

What were marn and christian saying? ETR is like the nicest dude in the world from what commentating ive heard from him before.
ETR gets consumed by the hype itself at times though, for better or for worse. lol

He is a really nice guy though, I assume he feels pretty bad about having to write that apology the next day.

I dont think the nos girls mind being called hot, thats kind of the point of being a model in the first place. If anyone found that part horrible then uhh idk

Yeah, I'm not quite exactly sure what the Nos girl bit had to do with the rest of the video, or why it was included in there in the first place.

Can't believe they caved that quickly.

I think we can expect this type of thing to happen much more frequently now that they know it's consistent.

Yeah, I'm not quite exactly sure what the Nos girl bit had to do with the rest of the video, or why it was included in there in the first place.

Ultimately that part's not that big a deal but when paired with making light of sexual harassment it does come off a bit scuzzy.

So, how much longer are we gonna tolerate Kotaku's yellow journalism, guys?

GAF members eat it up, so probably forever. If Kotaku wants to cover juicy stories, maybe they should look into the Starcraft 2 commentator who was fired a couple days ago for slandering a Korean player.

BTW I smirked when I saw that the whistleblower with the WNF video is a Starcraft 2 e-sports fan

It's not necessarily the NOS girl popup, but the fact that they joke that looking at them could be sexual harassment.

And the "oh, that's racist, I feel very awkward, someone write an article about it" comment shortly after.

The source doesn't matter when the material speaks for itself.

And now, the hidden gem we mentioned earlier in the thread finally gets its own section:

"Rockafeller has indeed been capturing accolades on Twitter and around the web for his behavior on Cross Assault. Unfortunately, the other half of accolades aimed at him seem to come from readers who are thankful for the stream of pornographic nude images (all of women) he shared on his Tumblr account [NSFW] this week."

So this is Kotaku's gimmick now? Shit on someone then try to make amends (on their terms, of course) in order to mask their opportunism? Anyone remembers the Esports article? Same thing.

Hey it's two (or more) articles for the price of one!

EDIT: Another SRK post is up, responding to Kotaku's article and calling for a change: http://shoryuken.com/2012/03/01/hurtful-speech-time-to-take-a-good-look-in-the-mirror/

So, it’s time to stand up. If we continue to let the worst elements in the scene speak for us or excuse their bad behavior, we deserve whatever criticism we get. It’s everyone’s responsibility: the players, the content producers, the tournament organizers, and the fans. We need to be just as serious about the way we treat each other and how we reach out to others online as we are about the game. This isn’t about killing the hype or white-washing the scene. We can be just as loud, excited and hype without belittling entire classes of people. ”It’s ok, we’re all friends”, and “I’m just joking” aren’t valid excuses.
