The game is a battle action game, and will feature online and offline multiplayer functionality, both co-operative and competitive, for up to eight players. The game will also make use of the Vita's built-in GPS functionality, near. The game features a whip called the "thorn" that the player can use to zip across the battlefield and pull giant monsters to the ground.

The game features a system known as the City-State War Mode, where players are separated into 47 Panopticons, with each representing one of Japan's 47 prefectures. Each Panopticon competes with the others in development, where players set out to seek natural resources and invade other Panopticons. Developed Panopticons have the capability to place other ones under their control, and leaderboards will be used to compare each City-State. Within this mode, criminals fight amongst themselves.

Players collect resources known as abductor parts. Those who contribute to their Panopticon are rewarded with accessory customisation. Voices triggered during the game can be customised. The game will feature text-to-speech functionality for communication between players in multiplayer games.

Weapons are categorised into six groups, namely small swords, large swords, spears, personal firearms, multipurpose firearms, and squad support firearms. Weapons feature varying degrees of rarity, and players are able to equip two simultaneously, whilst Accessories are able to equip one.

Freedom Wars takes place on Earth, in the year 102013. The world surface lies in ruins and is no longer capable of supporting life. As such, humans live in underground cities called "Panopticons", where they struggle to research how to be able to live on the surface once more. Overpopulation has become such an issue that the Panopticons have implenented a drastic measure: anyone arrested for any crime is found guilty, regardless of whether or not they actually are; and forced to battle giant monsters called "Abductors" as punishment. Defeating the Abductors, which are known to capture civilians, reduces the Criminals' sentences, which start at 1,000,000 years.

  • 8 player head 2 head combat after infrastructure mode patch.
  • 3 categories of melee & ranged weapons each, broken down into sub categories.
  • 3 different variations of the "Thorn" equipment, which is a main feature of the game system. Capture, Defensive, Support.
  • High speed movement possible using the "Thorn" system to latch onto objects and other characters and pull yourself towards them.
  • Accessory AI partner is fully customizable. Also customization of phrases they say in game is possible using a text to speech synthetic voice system. (No idea how trying to make them say words in English will sound)
  • Player characters can be further customized with decals available in the game and as dlc / special bonuses with physical items purchased, such as the special Famitsu edition of the game.
  • Win special items from the regional rankings. One example of an awarded prize was the hoverboard from the demo version.

#1:
Q: What type of game is this?
A: Its part of the "hunting action" genre, which is up to 4 players co-op with your AI partners making for 8 characters at once. (4 human w/ 4 AI partners). Though what differentiates this title from others such as Monster Hunter, God Eater would be how the game is designed and the thorn system that allows for movement in a 3 dimensional space by allowing the player to attach / pull themselves towards any valid object. Mission designs also allow for players to complete the mission just by rescuing a target, so it wont always be a constant kill everything type of deal which is what happens with most of the other titles in the genre.

#2:
Q: Im new to these type of co-op action titles, should I buy this game?
A: The game is designed to be played single player through the story and you will have AI story characters along with your AI partner the "Accessory" making it far easier to play solo. While this game will not have infrastructure (internet) play from the get go, here at GAF there should be a pretty strong community and am sure it will be easy to set up games with others who would be more than happy to help.

#3:
Q: Does this game work on a non Japanese PS Vita?
A: Yep! The Physical version will work no problem, though if you dont have a JP PSN account you will be unable to get DLC. Patches should work even without a JP PSN account. For the digital version you will not only need a JP PSN account, but also JP PSN cards to purchase the game.

#4:
Q: Do I need to know Japanese to play this game?
A: Not exactly, but at the same time it would help or else you wouldnt know what the skill / item effects are along with mission objectives. Then there is the whole missing out on the story part too... But if you just want a well made game to play on the Vita, this title would be an excellent choice.

#5:
Q: Any word on localization for the West?
A: It has been announced, but I dont think we have an official date yet. At least the game will be cheaper for you folks in the US. I recall them saying it will be around 30 USD?

#6:
Q: How do I make a Japanese PSN account on my PS Vita?
A: While I have no idea who these guys are at nihongo gamer, just watch this video. Am sure if you ask here too other GAF members will be more than happy to help out with info.

Shows how to make the strongest weap, and also how to get 特大 on everything. Hope it helps !

I've found out where to get the 5 modules item, http://gamehackerblast.com/post-11280/ enjoy !
This damn website seems to have everything from making tonnes of money to making super strong weapons and the like. I'll keep linking as I find them.

Special thanks to all of those in the Freedom Wars Demo Impression Thread by Hasemo. Thanks to him making that thread, bought me time to get the OT finished lol. Also good info in there which some was used here, such as the Volunteer Mission Types. Thanks again to Hasemo and warningjab for contributing to the useful information section with JP wiki links. Thanks to Anko for the rough translations of the 1.10 patch info!

Great job on the OT! Looking forward to playing this game this week. Finally got a replacement vita just yesterday too in time for it. Although sadly I may have to send it in to Sony as for some reason my screen seems darker than it should be. More so than my launch vita. Hopefully I can get some playtime in this week before that happens.

Great OT, subscribed!

Thanks man, will be counting on your usual info dumps since you seem far more connected with constantly checking that stuff.

My schedule is pretty slammed packed so while Ill be around to post, my gaming vids might take a bit more time. I "might" be able to get my game thursday, but am not sure since I get home so damned late from work due to distance. D:

Might snap and see if the Laox near work actually sells games if so will try to do a reservation there. Will wind up with 3 copies if so though...

Excellent.
Parakeetman, king of import OT.

Thanks! Im surprised I managed to pull this off in 2 days. D: Thank god too its at a reasonable time too since need to sleep soon lol. I hope the FAQ will fit with all these responses showing up. D:

So far the impressions from the early access and the public demo have been pretty positive from the GAF members that have played including myself. So with the full content am sure that will be even greater. Game seems to be pretty solid.

Mmm another great OT. Might just get this for my Vita even though I'm not all that into hunting games...

Thanks! Its worth checking out the demo at least to see if you like it. One thing for sure is the stuff you can do with the thorn system is pretty cool. Plus how you can beat some of the missions just by rescuing the civilians makes it more amusing than always having to kill / destroy a target.

The 3000? or is it 2000? series Vita the newer one the screen is slightly darker than the OG ones. Its the first thing I noticed, but then got used to it and think nothing of it these days. But sounds like its more than just the usual difference in brightness? D:

Excellent. This is the game I have been waiting for to finally jump into getting the Vita.

Until the official Asian release with Eng text, this will be me, I guess.

By the way, is the spelling of 'Proper-kun' the correct one?

I was under the impression that FW's mascot's name was shortened from "Propaganda."

Also, needs the creepy GIF of that mascot in this OT. :p

Well I got a new 1000, the 1100 ab01 3g/wifi model, which is supposed to be like the launch model I have already, I really wanted another OLED. But yeah for some reason its a little darker and the whites are all messed up. They seem more gray than anything. Contacted Sony and they said that can happen with some units but if it bugged me I should send it in to get it checked. But its a shame either way. Nice to have a new oled model but my older one is just easier to look at. So I guess it will be sent to Sony for a checkup by the end of the week. After a little Freedom Wars gameplay.

Now going back to more practice on great sword.

Online multiplayer mode planned for the summer!
I picked it up just for the stickers lol. Inside of it is just a bunch of color photos and very sparse info. Its mostly like stuff for the demo I suppose?

Btw Hasemo did you have time to run like a google spreadsheet for GAF members who will want to play with eachother once the infrastructure mode comes out? If so Ill make a section title for that. If not folks can just use the OT for all that info.
To answer your question from the previous topic - sorry, I have 0 experience making and managing google spreadsheets so I'll have to pass...
Also managing the list of gaffers for the PSO2 ots made me hate it forever. :p

lol no worries, we dont even have any idea anyways when the infrastructure patch will be out. I remember they said something similar for God Eater 2... We all know how that turned out lol, lets hope its not the case this time!

id have more luck disarming a bomb than running a spreadsheet.

Great job! Subbed :)

You won't be alone.

Been waiting for this, really great OT btw XD, subscribed!

Considering that hes all about teaching the player how to become a "model citizen" or whatever with all of the insane rules it makes sense. Originally had thought it was propaganda plus all the speakers around him, but the SCEJ english text in the original image is proper. All of those names is the exact same english used by SCEJ.

I guess your impression is right. And, it is also the parody of the Japanese law enforcement agency's mascot.

IIRC GE2's infrastructure mode was not planed to be implemented, at least for the vanilla version. I guess the reason is it must be compatible with PSP, plus many Japanese middle-to-high school kids play with ad-hoc anyway. They started the development after the release or something.

On the other hand, as for FW Sony said infrastructure mode is under development from the start, so I have a little more hope for that. What I'm guessing is that they've anticipated the release date for a month or two, to not to collide with Toukiden at August, and Monster Hunter at this fall.

Well, it's easier to have more faith in the timetable of a game update slated for a global release compared to a game only available in Japan where the expectations of online mode for hunting games are non-existent.

Oh, it's the official romanisation? Okay. ( Even if I think it's probably propaganda, but it's really just Japan being Japan when it comes to English and romanisations.)

No mention of the "Panopticon" idol group though?

Claiming Panna as my waifu

What's interesting about this game was that there's really a academic concept called "panopticon" where buildings e.g prisons are structured in such a way e.g guardhouse right in the middle so that prisoners are under the impression that they are being monitored 24/7.

I still believe that the GE2 team took so much time to prepare the update because they wanted to make it in such a way that could later be implemented into FW asap.

They didnt add other outfits in the demo. But they do exist. If you watch one of the customization vids it shows off some of the designs. Think its the first vid. The 2nd one is the voice stuff thats why.

Great job on the OT as usual! Hopefully this stays at the $30 price when it's released digitally in the US. Otherwise I'll probably wait for a possible expanded version.

is this game strictly multiplayer or is there single also?

As mentioned there is a whole singleplayer story driven campaign. Where you will have AI NPCs helping you out on missions along side your own customized Accessory. (AI companion)

Someone also needs to convert that hoverboard video into gif form.

All I have left I think is the Operation Abyss OT and Elminage Gothic one. Though that doesnt have an official release date yet asides from Summer.

Great OT, looking forward go it!

Thanks everyone!

Really excited for this game to arrive in the west, also looks like the game will have a lot more modes than I thought. I'd love to hear some impressions on the PvP, wondering if thats just tacked on or if its actually pretty fun. Also, not that I mind or anything but whats up with the headphones? Running is a crime but listing to music isn't? I just find it a bit odd is all.

You probably receive your orders/mission updates through those headphones.

Plus it's probably just something they added to make the overall design more distinctive.

Kinda like how skimpy clothing in God Eater universe was explained...in-universe with some reason I can't remember...

Might redo the weapon videos once the actual game comes out, as the chop shop job I did with the single weapon introduction vid came out a bit jank. But serves its purpose for showing each type separately. Still not happy with it. D:
also didnt have time to actually bother with trying to translate the character descriptions. hardly anyone reads those anyways, so figured no sense in wasting even more time lol. If I did have more time would have edited the full images to include the info.

Actually the GE2 infrastructure mode was announced pretty early on, which is why all the fans got pissed off with how long it took + how little info was let out about what was going on with it. Which is basically why everyone now is saying "to late" with the release of it, considering Freedom Wars is coming out.

Speaking of GE2, generally when can the announcement of the 'expansion pack' be expected?

At this stage, I'm thinking it'll probably be for GE2 : Burst Again.

I like that the names of those three idols form the word Panopticon. And the fact that the Propaganda-kun bear is based on some weird mascot the Japanese army had in the past is cool.

I think it was announced like a month before release. If they were going to need more than 3 months in order to launch it properly they could have just waited for the new version.

TGS if there even will be one.

Truthfully Id rather just have them make a Vita only GE3. Since GE2 is held back way too much by being linked to the PSP. And Im a huge fan of the PSP.

From what the plans sound like with Freedom Wars, it makes me wonder if they would even have enough resources to do another "version" of GE2. Since it looks as if they still have a lot of other stuff to do for Freedom Wars.

I remember they kept hyping up BIG PATCH etc constantly and each time no online mode, so eventually fans stopped giving a fuck lol. That and Id imagine playing online with randoms would = bosses getting 1 shotted most of the time by the insane bullets people have figured out to make. Me and a bunch of guys at work were talking about that,

Has there ever been a popular 共闘 game that didn't have an expanded release the following year? It's Japan's tried-and-tested semi-annualisation formula for these co-op battle games.

And yeah, I'd love for a Vita-only GE3. I love the visual upgrades on GE2, but from what little I played of GE2 with my friend's Vita... the maps/environment really feel like they're barely upgraded or improved from GE1.

the insane bullets people have figured out to make. Me and a bunch of guys at work were talking about that,

Till this day, I still can't wrap my head around how they create those bullets. (talking of GE1)

Tempted to package this in an order with Ao Evolution but since it has been announced to on its way west(though with no announced date), Im debating on whether I should just wait because while I do know how to read Japanese, given my druthers I'd rather play in English.
