The G1 Climax is the most anticipated annual wrestling event in Japan. Hosted by New Japan Pro-Wrestling, the oldest and biggest wrestling promotion in the country, the tournament this year features two blocks of eleven wrestlers competing in twelve shows over the course of twenty one days, all for a chance to challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship (currently held by AJ Styles) at the January 4th Tokyo Dome show, which could be described as the WrestleMania of Japanese professional wrestling. Last year's tournament (the first time international fans were able to watch the event live) was widely regarded as one of the best ever and it was a real treat to be able to follow along without having to wait weeks or months for the shows to surface online. This year, New Japan have pulled out all the stops for the 24th anniversary of the G1, with more shows on schedule and the largest assembled group of competitors yet and international fans will once more be able to watch the whole thing live via Ustream iPPV.

This purpose of this thread is to host WrassleGAF's G1 discussions, so they aren't lost amongst such a fast-moving thread, and to hopefully introduce some new fans to one of the best wrestling promotions in the world today. Scroll down to the media section at the bottom of the post for some of the best matches so far in 2014.

HELLACIOUS OP! I can't wait. I've paid my $110 for EVERY SINGLE NIGHT and it's going to be incredible.

Your Best of the 23rd video is fantastic as well, incredible stuff.

God damnnnnnnnnn I am ready! I picked Fale to go a LONG way, but Shibata's the favorite easily. Hope to see AJ Styles place highly as well.

CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS!

Put down my $110 for the iPPV package.

Would love to see Shibata or Ibushi win it, but is Ibushi even cleared to wrestle?

HYPED.

I'd love to see Nagata kick some ass this year. What's the over/under for Tenzan even wrestling every match he has scheduled? Poor guy...

Ibushi should be OK for the shows. Thankfully there's plenty of time between them instead of a two-week blitz.

Ibushi wasn't cleared to wrestle on the DDT shows over the weekend, but he is expected to return for his 10th Anniversary Match at DDT's Korakuen Hall show on Sunday, so hopefully he makes it. He had a great debut in the tournament last year, it'd be a shame to see him have to pull out before the thing even starts.

Still...if there were an early injury, I wouldn't mind if New Japan called up Honma.

holy shit Shelton Benjamin is in japan?

this thread is magnificent by the way. How is AJ Styles doing in japan anyway, I loved his early TNA stuff

Great OT, Bootay.

I'm still holding to my pick of Ishii. He's easily been New Japan's MVP this year, and I feel that company finally feels it's his time for a big push. At the very least he makes it to the final four. Hopefully someone else gets elevated to the main event, IE not Cenahashi.

AJ's doing very well for himself, being the current champ and all - the crowd weren't terribly familiar with him at first, I don't think TNA has much presence over there, but he's put on a great show with the two high-profile singles matches he's had so far and the fans have really reacted well to his in-ring ability.

*edit, here's his matches with Okada;

Kazuchika Okada (c) vs AJ Styles - (NJPW 05/03/14)

I can definitely see Ishii having a big run at the finals this year, not sure if he'll make it all the way though - there's a bunch of directions they can go, but I'm kinda leaning towards the final four being some combination of Nakamura, Tanahashi, Okada & Styles, but then there's guys like Shibata, Ishii, Naito, etc, who I could definitely see in the mix. It's a very open group and, what with Jado & Gedo's love of parity booking tournaments, I could see them keeping us guessing until fairly late in to the tournament.

Thanks, added to the OP.

Hah, I'm pretty sure that'd cause somewhat of a huge spike in New Japan's iPPV sales.

Already paid my money. Can't wait! Hopefully I can stay up and watch most of it live.

So this is probably a long shot, but is anyone interested in doing a contest like we did for the Avatar rumble?

Basically we put our avatar on the line, and get randomly assigned a wrestler. After the tournament, we all sport the winning wrestler as our avatar for a month. Or we can raise the stakes and we all agree to keep it until Wrestle Kingdom 9. :p

I don't know if we'll get enough people but it might be fun. If enough people are interested, I'll set up the rules and everything and make a post later tonight.

Ok I won't lie my familiarity with modern NJPW is basically limited too their appearances with Ring of Honor. But I did watch a few matches from Wrestle Kingdom and am in love with the product as a whole. My previous puroresu enjoyment was found in Toryumon/Dragon Gate, FMW and Noah but I am excited to see more New Japan. Any 2014 or 2013 show recommendations?

Great OP, Bootaaay.

A couple questions/discussion points:

1. How are the ticket sales Seibu Dome going?
2. What would everyone give the percent chance of a Goto/Shibata final?
3. If they really want to push to fill the dome, do they go for Nakamura/Okada, or is that getting saved for WK no matter what?

I'm up for wagering my avatar.

Yay, that's one! I might as well set it up, I'll probably bump this thread once I figure out how to set it all up.

Anything from Ishii's NEVER title reign are probably my favorite NJPW matches this year. Here's a few I could find.

Tomohiro Ishii vs Tetsuya Naito
Tomohiro Ishii vs Tomoaki Honma

Tomohito Ishii vs Kota Ibushi

If the tournament is for a title shot what does Styles get if he wins?

A big ass G1 trophy and a couple million Yen at least.

Package Deal; pre-purchase all 12 shows for $110 (that's $50 off) until July 21st Japan time* at www.ustream.tv/njpw

So tempted. And I don't even follow Japanese wrestling!

Then I remember that I barely catch Raw on Monday nights. There's no way I'd be able to watch a fuckzillion hours of this thing during the week =/

Looks like there's enough interest, so here we go! Bootaaay, feel free to quote this or put a link in the OP.

WRASSLEGAF PRESENTS: GAF1 Climax

What is this?

It's just another fun avatar contest, just like the annual Avatar Royal Rumble or the #YES #NO wager we had for Wrestlemania. This time, it's for the G1 Climax. You put your avatar on the line and if you lose, you'll have to wear an avatar of the winner for a month.

What are the Rules?

Either post in this thread, or PM me your name between now and July 21, 2014 12:00 AM Central Standard Time. After that, I'll use a generator to randomize your names and you'll be asigned a number. You'll be assigned a wrestler with the same number from this list. (I decided to assign numbers based on the order in the OP)

1. Tomohiro Ishii
2. Katsuyori Shibata
3. Kota Ibushi
4. Bad Luck Fale
5. Shinsuke Nakamura
6. Hiroshi Tanahashi
7. Doc Gallows
8. Davey Boy Smith Jr.
9. Shelton X Benjamin
10. Satoshi Kojima
11. Yuji Nagata
12. Togi Makabe
13. Tetsuya Naito
14. Hirooki Goto
15. AJ Styles
16. Kazuchika Okada
17. Minoru Suzuki
18. Karl Anderson
19. Hiroyoshi Tenzan
20. Toru Yano
21. Yujiro Takahashi
22. Lance Archer

So basically if you Draw 1, you'll be assigned Ishii, if you draw 22, you'll get Archer and so on.

Don't worry, I'll put up the list as soon as possible and I'll PM you who you got just in case you don't want to venture in the thread yet due to spoilers and what not.

If your guy wins, you'll get bragging rights and earn your place in history as the first ever GAF1 Climax winner.

If your guy loses, you'll be forced to wear an avatar of the winner for one month starting on August 10.

Or if you're feeling really daring, like me, you can choose to wear it until Wrestle Kingdom 9 on January 4, 2015. This is optional, but hey, why not?

Count me in on the Avatar Contest... and here's to an Ibushi win. I won't be able to watch every day, but I know that a large proportion of my lunch hours will be spent catching up on certain matches. Day 10 looks stacked with some awesome matches.

Ibushi's been pulled from the tournament. He hasn't fully recovered from his concussion, "there were no abnormalities in the head, but the damage caused by the kick to the head was still clear." Very disappointed but it is absolutely the right decision.

Great OP as always Bootaaay.

I picked up my ticket for the Takamatsu show a few weeks back and I'm really looking forward to it. NJPW rarely does shows consisting of singles matches when they come to my prefecture so this is a real treat. I'll be a lot closer to the action than I was for Wrestle Kingdom back in January as well.

Will try to post some pics here after the show.

Oh damn, that's a hell of a shame - wonder who they replace him with? Honma would be my pick, but they could chose another Jr.

Is there english commentary and subtitles?

Unfortunately, no - it's not a huge deal, there's very few promos (and when there are, this guy on twitter; https://twitter.com/puro_yottsume live translates) and the majority of the story is told through the action in the ring.

I am so damn hyped for this. I'll have to watch each show the following evening, so I'll have to avoid this place like the plague. :(

Edit: Bummed Ibushi won't be in it, hopefully his replacement is exciting.

Aiii

So not worth it
Mad props for that OP Boots, well done sir, you deserve a medal (or a tag as Puro King, whatever) for that.
