ughh those rivals suck ass.
I do miss Blue and Silver. Not even from a nostalgia perspective, but because I need someone to hate. When you got to the E4 in RBY, there was a massive motivation to beat your rival because the dude was a massive ass. Compare this to Wally. I felt guilty for beating Wally.
Thing is, their douchebag-ness doesn't make sense at all since you always beat them.
Doesn't matter. Yugi always beat Kaiba, Goku always beat Vegeta, Ash usually beat Gary, etc. As long as a) they are massive jerks, and b) they're at least challenging, they're doing their job. When they're some kid suffering from asthma whose team is like 15 levels below yours, something has gone dramatically wrong.
And those characters actually tend to be laughable at best, felt like they were compensating for something (especially Kaiba) - Vegeta at least got married.
I honestly think Barry and Cheren are great rivals. They may be friendly but they are also competitive.
I don't want them to be friendly, damnit. Why would I want them to be friendly? I don't want to beat a friend, there's no fun in that. I want to crush my rivals, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Who's saying you can't do that to your friends? Why not be that yandere?

Also still no sign of professor or mom, and Trevor looks like he's wearing school uniform.
Dorms confirmed?
You don't need the rival to be an abrasive asshat to have a good competitor.
From what I'm seeing there it seems like Trevor's the one who gives you the Pokedex, rather than the regional professor. What's this about dorms?
I disagree. I just didn't really feel any motivation to beat them. Abrasive asshatness is what made Blue and Silver so good.
But Silver is absolutly terrible he doesnt even acknowledge he lost to youI disagree. I just didn't really feel any motivation to beat them. Abrasive asshatness is what made Blue and Silver so good.
But there really wasn't substance in their abrasiveness either. If anything, you'd expect them to be weaker because "they don't know how to treat their mons well". At the very least, Cheren feels "more threatening" since he has the balance of knowing "the power of friendship" and at the same time the drive of Blue/Green.
Eh. Was never really one for "power of friendship" stuff in either myself or my antagonists. As far as I remember, I created a ruthless eugenics programme whereby Pokemon with poor genetics were released and the remainder left in captivity until they finally produced Ubermensch offspring, who were then pumped full of drugs until they could take no more and given a sugary steroid to accelerate their growth. The process was finished off by using them as bait and switch material for my strongmen to instill the battle experience that results from true terror, with the finished product forced to repeatedly destroy the hopes, dreams and ambitions of Frontier challengers and unfortunate WiFi competitors. I don't recall friendship coming into it much, so if Blue and Silver missed out on it can't say it fusses me.
Well, you were going for character debate (abrasive etc.) so I went with that, without involving in-game mechanics
Seriously, having four "rivals" is the best thing they have ever done in quite a while
Why?
EDIT: Whoops, double-post. Sorry!
Well, really, I want two things out of my rivals. The first is that they have to provide me motivation for beating them, which is a "story" element so to speak. The second is that they are at least moderately difficult to beat, which is a "game" element. Cheren having "the power of friendship" doesn't actually make him more difficult to beat even though it should do story-wise, and it actively reduces my motivation to beat him. That's probably a better way of explaining it.
Why?
I disagree. I just didn't really feel any motivation to beat them. Abrasive asshatness is what made Blue and Silver so good.
The whole "everyone is nearby" feel. It's like dorms, and you only see like two buildings.

Shauna - an energetic girl who is eager to discover her own dreams. But she's also genuinely curious about her friends' progress in their travels!
Tierno - burly and nimble, and his goal is to create a dance team with his Pokémon! He pays close attention to Pokémon when they battle to see he if he can incorporate their actions into new dance moves.
Trevor - his goal is to be the first of the group to complete his Pokédex. He's a great student, bursting with curiosity, but he admits that he has much to learn to become a great Trainer.
Serena/Calem - Your next-door neighbor in Vaniville will set out on a journey just like everyone else, with the goal of becoming a powerful Pokémon Trainer. If your character is a boy, your neighbor will be Serena. If you play as a girl, Calem will be your neighbor.
Also, it seems as the main characters' names are indeed Xavier/Yevonne, but if you don't select them, they are Calem/Serena.
In BW the one you want to beat is N. Cheren and Bianca are more like your foils. I am one of the people who see N as a straight archetypical rival used in the games alongside Cheren and Bianca.
Rival is really a strange term in Pokemon. Rivalry just means you guys are competing on a singular goal, but that doesn't mean you outright hate each other, but sadly Green, Gary, and Silver ruined the term.
Hell, I like how they expanded BW's rivals for this gen. Each one of your friends have their own goals to fulfill while at the same time wanting to beat an aspect of you.
Huh? No, it's Calem/Serena. Xavier/Yvonne is a placeholder name for the demos it seem.
Yeah, I preferred Gary as the rival since it gave me motivation to really kick him to curb with his doucheness.
Don't really care personally for best buddy rivals.

I think you don't get what I am referring to. Default "canon" name is Calem/Serena. The Xavier there is used by the player playing the game being shown in the screenshot, but not the "canon" name. Think of Brendan/May.
I miss asshole rivals.
I don't think it's gonna be like Brendan/May, and their canon name depends on the position, but whatever.

No not really, it kind of loses the meaning of a "rival" and it's starting to more feel like Sonic & Friends. Actually BW felt that way too. Rival/=/friends, Nintendo. Wasn't the dude in GS a thief for godsake?

And rivals =/= douchebag. You can have many rivals especially when you are competing for different aspects while still being friends. In BW you have 3 rivals, and only 1 actually prevailed at the end while the others peter out.
