Shane Black: RDJ wants Mel Gibson to direct Iron Man 4

There is no reason for me to go back and tear it apart. It was what it was and on to the next thing.

You don't have to tear it apart on revisit. Noticing its (abundant) flaws doesn't take away from the effect it had on you as a kid. Or at least, it doesn't have to. It just means it won't hit you as hard as it did then.

Or maybe it will. Maybe it'll work exactly the same. It might even improve.

Nothing wrong with giving it a revisit from a different perspective.

I don't know if Saint Mel is the right fit for comic book movies, but that drunk racist knows how to make a great film and maybe that extends to Iron Man.

The Man Without a Face
Braveheart
The Passion of the Christ
Apocalypto

That's his filmography.

Braveheart is overlong and pretty poorly paced
The Man Without a Face is overly sentimental and hammy (also poorly paced)
The Passion of the Christ is straight up religious torture porn.
Apocalypto is a fucking amazing action movie.

I think maybe Mel Gibson's filmography isn't near as impressive as we tend to automatically give it credit for being.

That's aside from the fact he's apparently a giant piece of shit as a human being.

Guy hasn't really had much chance to stretch his career out after he made stupid comments though that efefctively ended him in Hollywood, the reports from his WWII film have been very positive so far. Knowing how grim Passion and Apocalypto both were, I'd imagine it will be a harrowing film experience. I'm just glad he's directing again, personally.

I don't rewatch a lot of movies. Specially ones that made an impact.

Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. One time viewing. Just how I am.

It's a mind altering substance. It doesn't merely "unibhibit". Some people react differently to it than others but I've seen people act like entirely different people while drunk, say things that are not at all like them, things that don't make any sense whatsoever, and sometimes just unintelligible noises. To say that alcohol simply lifts a veil to reveal a person's true self is extremely misinformed.

Sorry, I'm not so willing to just give someone the pass on this.

I understand that alcohol is mind altering, but "Raped by a pack of niggers" and "Oven dodger" or whatever the fuck he said is just so old school and vile, I can't think for a second that's not exactly who Mel Gibson is. I've never even heard something that racially vile before he said it. It's completely beyond the pale for me, regardless of what his state was at the time.

Mel is already rich. He neither needs or deserves a comeback. Fuck him, and fuck RDJ for even suggesting this shit. I'll actively boycott this film if it's made under these conditions, and will get as many people as I possibly can to do the same. Not that it matters. I don't think modern day Disney would want to touch this with a 100 foot pole.

Still beats any of the Marvel crop of directors if you're going by resume alone.

Maybe Brannagh beats him.

I don't know about that. The space of time between his first movie and 2006, when he first started catching heat for being an unhinged misanthrope, is 13 years.

Other notable directors who debuted in 1993:

John Madden
Bryan Singer
Tom Tykwer
Steven Zaillian
Guillermo Del Toro
Paul Haggis
The Hughes Brothers
Henry Selick
Trey Parker

I don't know that his mouth is what prevented him from stretching those directorial legs in that space of time.

I don't want to go full on "Mel Gibson is racist and hates Jews", because a lot of it could just be drunk parroting of his father. But it is pretty bad and he obviously has an anger issue. My dad has said some ridiculously hardcore racist shit and my brother, who is 100% not a racist, has parroted it while drunk just cause we've had to listen to it constantly.
Your dad is racist and your brother is too.

Some of this posts lols.

If he directs a Marvel movie it will automatically be the best of the MCU, regardless of what he said or did.

Dude is a fucking insane racist prick, but he still made some incredible movies IMO.

The last I heard of Mel he was working on some Viking epic, but could not get any footing for it. I am guessing due to his reputation, which is a shame. He no doubt could make something amazing with such material.

In vino veritas. I say this as someone that drinks a lot.

I dont think this will happen tho, thats like Marvel saying "lets throw all the good will we have now down the trash"

Wont happen ever.

Maybe WB are crazy enough to let the racist fuck direct some R Rated DC movie.

People who say "Disney won't do it" underestimate how badly they'd want RDJ back for another one. Now, I don't actually see RDJ hanging his hat on that, but he might. And if that's the condition, damn straight they would do it.

I’ll go on record saying I don’t believe anyone should be held accountable in any way for something they say while they are drunk. It’s not who they are.

That's garbage. Alcohol lowers inhibitions and doesn't give you the racist

Mixed feelings about this aside, if this happened, RDJ would likely put out his best performance as Tony Stark yet. That would be pretty worthwhile.

Did you know Halo invented the FPS?
Guess no amount of apology is enough for neogaf. His tirade was bad but that was years ago and he learned from his mistakes.

Strongly disagree with this basic premise.
And the things Mel Gibson has said and done stone cold sober aren't any better than the record of his DUI arrest.

But hey, Hollywood gotta protect its own at any cost, right?

Yup. This line is completely bullshit. If anything, things you do and say while you're drunk reflect who you really are far better than who you are sober, depending on how confident a person you are on the daily.

Ironically the same group that was praising Hulk Hogan when he won his suite against Gawker despite the fact that he has had a couple racist tirades of his own. The enemy of my enemy is my friend I suppose.

Nah, I'd rather not get an Iron Man 4 than have that guy direct it. His movies aren't even that good, to be honest. If we had to get an Iron Man 4 though, I would want Shane Black to do it.

Nonsense. I have done some unbelievable things while I was shitfaced back when I was wild and in my 20s. Stuff I would never even consider doing sober and in my right mind.

Let's see, getting naked and falling all over the house while playing strip poker. Walking up and down the infamous Stewart Avenue in Atlanta at 2 in the morning while eating a whole cake and throwing money at people... just to name a few.

All I got from such actions is waking up embarrassed and not believing what I did. Long story short, booze can make you say and do some really stupid things.

Oh man I'll never not get a laugh out of what you told me

It kinda ended like this, but imagine that the bottle doesn't break and everyone kinda jogs back to their cars after hearing a really loud thudding noise instead.

That actually happened to me. And I woke up outside of a club after blacking out because the bouncers tossed me in an alley at the side of the building. Crazy times.

If he truly changed, I'd forgive him and see the movie. There are plenty of pieces of shit in Hollywood anyway.

I can understand if this isn't the sentiment shared with most people.

Lol, like a Mel Gibson gives a fuck about our forgiveness.

You getting drunk and a severe alcoholic that was probably using others drugs as well getting drunk is a whole different level. In high enough doses alcohol can make you hallucinate and completely fuck up your ability to regulate mood and speech centers. Clearly he has a lot of problems but coming from a super racist household and probably being beaten as a kid can fuck you up a lot. He was clearly a bad person at the time but he seems to be cleaned up now at least and has at least attempted to fix himself. I don't know though it's a tough question about whether he should get another chance since he was so completely vile before. But really I am a white non jewish dude so I don't think I really have a say in the matter either way.

He probably cares quite a bit. Creative people usually like to keep working and a large portion of his friends swore him off at the time for very good reasons. The problem is there is no way to know if he has really changed. He appears to be sober and quieter now but changing deep seated racism is super difficult in any person I have ever encountered especially when you have his broken shitty background.

People acting like Ironman movies are well directed, parts of 1 and 2 are as dumb as fast and furious series
3 was a trainwreck.
