The Spoony Experiment

Never played FFXIII, even so it sits besides me in my shelf, but how can anyone like this game and its plot: "Now we go grinding!" "Look out, a pointless dungeon ahead!". Just wow.

The bad guy's voice being the "You're in my way, sir"-SWAT-Officer is just brilliant!

It truly is a horrendous game in all respects, outside of graphics. Really.

It's the only game, that I can think of, where people excuse 20 hours of walking down a corridor with "after that, though, it gets really good." When, really, it only gets okay. After twenty hours of walking in a straight line. As if, even if being on Pulse was brilliant it excuses the atrocious beginning.

It is, hands down, the worst Final Fantasy, only possibly being surpassed by FF2. At least 2 has the excuse of, well, RPGs had just kind only been invented. XIII-2 is better, but only by default because XIII is so damn bad. It, also, has terrible writing but at least starts of significantly faster.

For the life of me I cannot understand any of the justification for why people like the game or why anybody marks it as their favorite. It's just trash.

Let me just be the first to say I think I love you.

His review was hilarious, can't wait for the last one.

But Final Fantasy still stands as my favorite franchise ever, so despite everyone hating on FFXIII, I can still enjoy it, though its not as fun as XIII-2, the plot is uhh, nothing special and like he points out, could have been presented better. But I've experienced worse. (Cough DmC Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 6, Killzone 3 Cough)

Man, I can't get enough of his FF analysis. Basically mirroring everything I hated in FFXIII. His FFVIII reviews were spot on and he does the same thing with FFFXIII. I didn't agree with him 100% for FFX, but yea, FFXIII is a giant turd.

Pretty much this. I've found myself eerily agreeing with Spoony on a lot of his opinions regarding the FFs he's reviewed. I might not be as avid a hater of FFX, but I still remain among the small group who felt it was nothing special.

At first I was going to complain that he skipped a lot of stuff, but then I realized that really, nothing truely happens to progress the story during all that crap he passed over. I think part of it was that he has XIII-2 and LR to review. I *really* wanna see him cover LR. Kind of surprised he didn't make jokes about the other half of the summons showing up.

My wife and I started watching his old Phantasmagoria 2 Let's Play today, and it is riveting. I think we'll be tempted to cut Xmas celebrations short tomorrow, just so we can get home and finish it.

That Phantasmagoria playthrough is 11/10 material.

Agreed easily on of the best LPs ever.
The ripper one isn't half bad either.

Just watched the new part of FF13 review.
Definitely the best part yet personally since he went right through the middle.
He nitpicked parts but didn't go overboard like in an earlier part that I recall.

it didn't have a sketch like he did about upgrading the weapons in Part 4. that was unbearably long. i like when he just talks and shows clips. it's perfect that way.

Agreed. I'm a big fan of just a rant with clips thrown in.
Don't mind sketch's if they're short. Since you just reminded me about the upgrade weapons which drug out far to long.

Man this whole review was a bore(the whole ff13 not just part6), not because of spoony, I believe the game is so awful that even with the funny remarks(I really enjoyed those) I still felt bored.

Whenever this thread gets bumped, I get excited. Found out about Spoony when this thread first got posted back in 2008, and I've always been thankful for it. Glad he's finally finishing the XIII review. I was really hoping he'd get it done before Rebruary, as we all know that's when the new year really starts.

Based on this comment, I'm gonna watch that review. I am definitely part of that small group.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Fun fact: The voice of Barthandelus not only did Reynolds in SWAT 4, but also Hades in Kid Icarus Uprising.

So not only did he do one of the worst villains ever, he did one of the best (seriously, go play Kid Icarus Uprising, it's 100000 times better than FFXIII).

Oh man just finished the review.
The final part was the best especially in showcasing just how awful FFXIII story is.
I knew it was bad when I played through it but I clocked out early on and just played the game and just threw my own story in there. Can't wait to see him tackle FFXIII-2 later on which somehow manages to take the story of XIII and make it worse.

Did anyone figure out what the dialogue at the end of the video comes from? The only words I picked up were "Kyo wa", which means "today".

Anyone not like the new site? I like the new color theme but the font and everything else seems off

The only problem I have with it so far is the font under the name of each video. The are that looks like this,

I actually think this was his most agreeable review so far, he pretty much highlighted everything i disliked about the game.

Fun fact: I never got past the internet part and this was the first time i saw the final boss and ending, my mind is blown at how silly the ending is.

While we're at it Lightning's voice actress also played Palutena and Snow's actor played Pyrrhon, who is pretty much what Snow would be like if he was likable and funny.

It depresses me that they wasted an entire generation, and not just any generation, the longest, most drawn out generation in gaming history, on this giant fecal speckled dirge of a series. Yes, that's three games. Three games based on these bloody awful characters. Personally, I think it's some kind of initiation; keep making Lightning games until there's just one person left, one person whose still interested in the series. They become the next chairman of Square-Enix. Great review, and his most insightful on the series.

Yeah his best review for me. The other FF reviews seemed to be him picking at flaws just for the sake of it (there are giant flaws of course, but you can just enjoy those rides).

FF13 just doesn't have that same quality and he summed it up well.

Saw topic bumped. Checked Spoony's site. New design. New FFXIII parts.

Is Spoony fixed?

He's recently came back to game stuff after his stint with those VCR games. Only review worth a damn out of those was the Isaac Asimov board game. When I wanted FMV Hell to come back shitty board games that were shitty review material was not what I wanted. Regardless he's definitely getting back into the swing of things.

Yeah it really is sad that this gen graced us with XIII. The first time FF mainline would be multiplatform at release and the first time they could access such a huge number of new fans. Then they just shit all over it with XIII, then somehow managed to go even worth with XII-2 and LR from the sound of things. Still don't understand why they didn't just take the assets from XIII and try to make something else even if it wasn't a mainline FF game. We know they heard all the negative press yet for this gen just seems like they said screw it we'll try again with XV and keep churning out junk this gen. Even though that hurts us more in the end.

I didn't even find XIII that bad, but focusing on it for an entire generation was probably the worst mistake SE could have even made at this point.

Hell, I wouldn't even have minded a XIII-2 if it actually tried to expound upon some of the more interesting things left unresolved in XIII (basically the War of Transgression between Pulse and Cocoon and why Pulse is essentially a human-less planet from what we've seen). But XIII-2 and LR just decided to up the ante on stupid while compounding bad design decisions.

And these games are what SE wants to focus on while it takes an arm and a leg to get shit like Type-0 and Bravely Default localized, and they continue to pull the same "wait until [x] for new FFXV info!" that they have done for an entire goddamn half-decade. Good god, is this company frustrating as hell.

It's amazing what good writing and voice direction can do.
Of course, Troy Baker is everywhere now.

Yeah, that last scene hit you hard

There's just something hilarious about people reading off porn titles. I remember when the RedLetterMedia crew read off the titles of Nick Phillip's porn movies and absolutely lost it.

Yeah, that scene at the end... every JewWario tribute has hit hard. Linkara had one on today's AT4W

So he has a three part video series as to why the new Robocop is terrible, the first part is seventy minutes, the middle part is 49 minutes long. So at least two hours spent reviewing a two hour movie...I just don't understand.

I question why all these humorous critiques have to be twenty+ minutes in the first place. Why the episode 1 review is seventy minutes, beyond bloat, I don't know. But at least that review was edited and written, this is just Spoony rambling with his girlfriend for two hours about one subject.

I mean, I've hated entertainment before, but after twenty minutes of talking about, I'd just say fuck it.
