I'm not sure if I'm immoral for saying this, but his manifesto is fascinating. Absolutely horrid, but fascinating. I'm trying to understand how this train of thought and mentality is developed.

IMHO, just a lot of perseveration and narcissism.

Is it weird that I'm irked by how "90s kid" his upbringing was?

Oh you liked Pokemon and N64. No shit. You and everyone else born in the 90s.

It's kind of bizarre that his asides about videogames feature so prominently in his manifesto. Now that's the part that's very American Psycho, but instead of 80s bands its 90s games.

He did, he had Asperger's. (Hopefully this doesn't start an association with it and psychos between the two shootings, though.)

I'm not saying that having Autism causes someone to go out and kill, but it may make it more difficult for them to cope with bullying.

When I'm insulted or criticised, I'm usually able to tell where the other person is coming from. I can judge the social context of the situation, and realize whether the person is being combative and lashing out, or pointing out a genuine flaw in something I've done.

If it's the former, I will shrug it off without much thought. If it's the latter, I'll self reflect and course correct if I feel guilty of said flaw.

I'm not sure a person with Autism will react the same way. People with autism tend to over-think things and internalize the criticism they receive unaware of the social context.

Once you put yourself out there, the amount of mockery and criticism that the internet allows for is unreal. It's probably a lot to process for them.

I find it extremely depressing on a lot of fronts. Especially the lines about him TELLING his mother to sacrifice her values for his happiness. His own mother!
It's the part about killing his own brother, for the sake of him having a hypothetical "more successful" life, that I find the most horrid. But like I said, how someone can legitimately have these thoughts is absolutely fascinating.

IMHO, just a lot of perseveration and narcissism.
But... how, though? I'm certainly not a psychology major, but how can narcissism be developed completely naturally? Wouldn't it take an event, or series of experiences, to develop such a twisted view?

They've moved onto parodying/mocking the Youtube videos.
You have to commend 4chan, for instead of portraying him into a standard media spotlight, they treat this like the piece of shit that he was. You'd have to imagine that if he were around today, he'd get some sort of gratification at the way the media (us included) are discussing him. We're trying to understand how his perspective came to be (well, certainly myself), emerging ourselves into the details, reviewing his videos, reading his manifesto as he intended us to... Not that what we're doing is wrong or immoral, but I praise 4chan for taking the perspective of "the guy's a fucking spoiled pussy who's too beta to get anywhere, because life was handed to him and he doesn't know how to work for anything" (that's my understanding, anyways).

Am I the only one that's incredibly pissed that the police didn't take the reported videos seriously enough to conduct a search of his room?

They could have stopped the massacre right there.

Here's the thing about the SBPD: They're stupid useless fucks. And the sherif is up for reelection. Whoops.

Seven officers responded to the call his mother made. SEVEN. SEVEN OFFICERS. And not ONE of them had the thought that maybe the kid was either full of shit, or should be investigated further, after seeing the videos he posted. NOT ONE.

If any of them had gone to a judge and said "Hey we got a call from this kid's mom, she said he's posting videos about killing people and he's been seeing psychiatrists but she's worried he might be a danger to himself or others" a warrant would be signed before he even finished the sentence. But SEVEN officers went to his apartment and talked to him and unanimously decided "He seems like a quiet, timid boy and he says it's all a misunderstanding. GOOD ENOUGH FOR US!" and that was that.

They fucked up BAD on this one. I already hated the fucking imbeciles at the SBPD but no, you are not alone, I am furious with the way the handled this.

They could have probably searched based on the whole "suicidal" part of the call probably. Life and death situation = probable cause.

That's not how it works.

An officer can only enter if there are exigent circumstances, they have search warrant, or the occupant allows the police to enter. A well being check is not an exigent circumstance unless it's the well being of another person within the home and someone is blocking the door saying everything is fine.

Here the occupant said everything was fine. Police asked several questions and asked the occupant if they could search the house. Occupant said no, Police did all they could. Now, if it was obvious the occupant was in a suicidal rage, they would have hospitalized him for observation and still not have been able to search the home without a warrant or permission from the occupant. (Aside from in plain view)

Anyways, man. I just can't believe that sometimes mental problems are so obvious yet nothing can be done about it. He was seeing psychiatrists and still nothing could be done for him.

Here's the thing. Did the officers actually watch the video? Because usually officers doing a well being check as well as dispatch do not watch videos while on the job. Did the mother say he was going to kill people or just that he was suicidal and could harm others? There is not much the police can do unless they have evidence and take that up to the judge.

The doctor prescribed Risperidone but he didn't take it.

Report me for trolling ND/TLoU2 threads
that is some messed up shit. Christ i battled severe depression from grade 7-10, got rejected a lot, i have a face even a mother wouldn't love however killing people never ever ever once crossed my mind as being a solution. fast forward i am now a teacher, been with my amazing gf the love of my life for 6 and a half years, going to propose to her next month actually, life has been great. But everything changed when i stopped focusing on meaningless things like getting a gf, or being cool to other people or doing what they did. Be an individual and wear it proud. Stop obsessing over things and let them happen naturally. in the words of the 40 year old virgin movie stop putting the pussy on a pedestal

My wife's family still lives in Goleta. This was all very close to home. My wife knows people on campus as well. This is all too crazy.

I can't believe that his video sat live for 24 hours and nobody stopped him. What a sad shame.

Obvious mental issues here, just because you're jealous of someone doesn't mean you have the right to hurt them. And instead of working on his game he just sat there and ranted about others.

Wasn't trying to imply you were trying to make that leap- rather that the narrative might emerge due to recent events and would need to be pushed back against hard if it does.

This guy clearly had a massive crap-ton of issues, and that was only the tip of the iceberg. The bullying wasn't triggering/victimizing him here based on what he's written.

OMG... He is one of those 'nice guys'. The crazy thing about all this is he actually seems quite a good looking guy. I am guessing the reason no girl was interested in him is because he has one hell of a batshit insane personality.

This is a short documentary on 'incels,' involuntary celibates.

They are attending a meet-up. It's interesting to see them interact socially. I wouldn't be surprised if these people ran in the same online circles as Elliot. There's a lot of overlap in the things they talk about.

I really think he had some form of autism. The dire tone he tries to affect in a lot of his videos reminds me of chrischan. His way of thinking is extremely systematic. He thinks all he has to do meet certain criteria on paper, and a girl will desire him. He seems completely oblivious to nuances of personality that girls find attractive.

Autistic people will also often have a pet project or hobby that they will completely obsess over. It's really unfortunate that his project was becoming an 'alpha' male, something he seemed fundamentally unequipped for.

That documentary was a rough one to watch, especially for UWT and Advanced.

But it's so much worse than that, in some of these stories the only beef he has with the other guy is that he has a hot girlfriend and isn't white.

Yea remember that kid who posted a comment on a League of Legends Facebook page and got busted? These videos seem a lot worse than that one random comment.

That kid got like 5 months in jail for it.

Yup, his problem is that he expected women to flock to him
Probably felt it was beneath him to ask them out

I don't think he expected that. I don't think he believed anything in his manifesto until he went off the deep end. I think he knew what he was and hated himself for it but could not accept it and wasn't strong enough to face the fears he needed to in order to become a better person. So he chose to create and lose himself in this reality where it's the world around him that is messed up and not himself.

To me it's almost as if he was talking into a mirror trying to convince himself it's not him it's them. He got lost in that fantasy and sadly acted it out and took innocent lives.

Yeah, agreed. At first I was just bringing it up out of interest, but I could see how you'd get the wrong idea.

This is a problem a lot of dudes have. They project their own criteria for attraction on women.

Guys typically place a much higher priority on physical features like shape and proportions. Women value those things too, but are more perceptive and selective when it comes to subtle nuances in personality and body language.

For someone who has trouble picking up on those things, I can understand how it does not compute for them, which leads to frustration.

This is like a Bret Easton Ellis novel. I can't help but to read it in Patrick Bateman's voice, either. Horrible. :(

That was my initial impression as well, it's quite fascinating actually. But if you told the guy he reminded you of Patrick Bateman, he probably would've taken that as a compliment.

We can dig deep into whatever pathology may or may not be present in the boy.... but damn if it doesn't just come down to being a sexually frustrated hater. A player hater in particular.

Yeah I'm sure if more people told him he needed to stop player hating and get laid he would have been better off...

Maybe the police should have done their fucking job then and if the mother said "My son posted a video that disturbed me and I want you to check on him" then they'd either watch the fucking video or conducted a more thorough investigation. You don't get a call from a mother like that, calling into a self harm hotline to get the police to go check on her kid, and then have the kid just sit there and go "Oh no everything is fine it was a misunderstanding" and leave it at that unless you're a fucking lazy shit for brains cop. If I was one of those seven police and I was sent on the call where "a mother is concerned for the well being of her child after watching disturbing videos he uploaded" then I wouldn't just take the kid at his word that things were fine and leave, I'd look into it on the off chance that something exactly like this would happen.

It's not like Santa Barbara cops have a shitload to do other than harass people, break into homes without warrants, and shoot dogs.

I'm not proposing a solution so much as calling it what it is: this was a garden variety hater, but way out of control. (But you know, so was Hitler...)

But yeah actually.. He was shown to have respected certain people in his manifesto... if one of them had actually gotten ahold of his worldview and called it what it was, maybe it would have pivoted him. Certainly the work of a good therapist could have steered him away from buying into his worldview so much. We needn't presume mental illness led deterministically to this conclusion...

Case closed. He bad a bad case of the "player hater".

I'm not exactly looking to satiate Armchair Diagnosis GAF. It's merely an observation that this is not that remarkable. Plenty of men grow to hate those who are sexually successful. One just took it all the way.

Sex wouldn't have helped. A girlfriend wouldn't have helped.

He had deeply seated issues with all of humanity. Some snoo snoo wouldn't have relieved that.

His encounter with Chance is the most intense player-hating I've ever seen. I won't post the excerpt because he gets pretty racist in it, but basically here is what happened.

His room-mate invites over a black friend, Chance. Chance is talking about hooking up with a girl. Elliot gets frustrated and asks everyone in the room if they are virgins. They all say they lost it a long time ago. Chance says he lost his virginity to a white, blonde girl. Elliot can't handle it. He goes to his room, has a breakdown and calls his mom crying.

Looking at his videos and reading all his crap, unbelievable. Can't deal with rejection. Seems nobody was willing nobody wanted to tell him it's because of his personality and grew up thinking that he could get any girl without any effort whatsoever. Like they belonged to him.

RIP to those who were killed, tragic.

Everyone keeps saying he was mentally ill (clearly he was) So what could have been done to change his views? He seemed SOOOO far gone with his opinion on woman and the envy of them being with other guys he could not enjoy anything without thinking about it. He kept on and on about the sunset and how nature was beautiful but not when youre alone, or not when you think about guys with girls that I should be with.

It is so messed up but how exactly do we treat someone like this? Pills? Intense therapy? I just wish they would have stopped him from doing this and it was a 2 page thread on here about how he attempted.

I didn't say anything about him getting laid.

Also, he could still be a mentally deranged individual, but if he got off the "sexual success = self-worth" worldview, he would still be better off.

I actually know people I would call "megalomaniacs" with similar superiority complexes over humanity.... But you know, if they get off the murder plans, they end up just being crazy bloggers and whatnot.

Maybe bad sex with a pretty girl would've. He could've understood that he wasn't actually missing out on all that much... 'cept for the fact that he based his entire world view around the idea of getting it or not getting it, and coiled up the entirety of worth and value into those things.

Someone like this kid is beyond mentally ill into certifiably insane territory. Since humanity can't justify shooting a person into the sun, I'd think the best idea would be to lock him up far far away from people to make sure he could never, ever hurt even one person.
