Xenoblade Chronicles X: April 10th Doll Presentation [up: video with subtitles]

Pretty sure one of the first trailers showed a Doll cutting off a monsters tail or arm or something

That's a standard gameplay mechanic that you can do without a doll as well. Cutting off limbs is part of the standard combat.

Reading comments around the internet, people are now afraid this game focuses on multiplayer. Come on now, there is a reason they showed it last people. It's there for those that want it but not required.

So the same stupidity from 2013 returns now? God, some people are dense. It's like everything else we've seen doesn't exist anymore.

A PSP port just sold a million copies because of a demo for an upcoming game. Don't know how Persona 5 will break, but I'm guessing PS4 sales won't be a slouch there.

I've not really seen any indication the JRPG audience is on the Wii U. I haven't seen any indication there's an audience for anything besides established Nintendo characters on the Wii U, so Xenoblade X's screwed in a few ways here.

I don't think Nintendo is aiming to sell gangbusters, just to give the Wii U a more well-rounded library as a platform (and content to keep people busy). They'll likely be more concerned about critical response. I don't think we should be expecting the numbers an established RPG series would get on the PS4.

But we can and should expect a really great game nonetheless.

Even after reading that siliconera article on the networking features I'm still a bit confused.

So am I reading this correctly, you can't play with other player characters but instead you will play with an AI version of another player character?

I think you're allowed to "rent" other players' customized characters to fight with you (like the pawns in Dragon's Dogma), but in that case they're AI-controlled.

But you can also do squad missions - from my understanding, you're placed in a squad of up to 32 people with a group of shared objectives, and once some of those objectives are completed then individual group missions are available, which can be done with up to three other players in live co-op (or some AI characters if you don't have a full team of 4). Some of the larger monsters are only available to be fought in live co-op mode.

On another note, I'm really looking forward to the mech. customization, but I know I'm going to have a hard time choosing mech names - something suitably cool-sounding while hopefully not cringe-inducing. Or maybe I should just embrace the cheesiness. These were some suggestions from this mech. name-generator:

http://www.seventhsanctum.com/generate.php?Genname=mechaname
Cosmic Annihilator: Scythe Machine
Covert Guardian: Isis Fourteen
Great Smasher: Mars Tau
Panzer Deus: Avatar Tsunami
Protoguard: Annihilator Epsilon
Super Combat Fortress: Khan Ghost
Tactical Pyrobeamer: Summoner Demon

Can we please not do this "this game is gonna bomb so hard" nonsense again like with every Nintendo game that isn't Mario? Seriously, what's the point. Let the sales be the sales and talk about them once they happen and there are numbers to talk about. But now, let that shit rest.

What you're thinking of is just one part of it. There is 4-player co-op for "squad" missions.

This right here:
When any of the five objectives of a Squad Mission is met, you can participate in a Squad Quest. These are special missions that allow you and four members team up together for a quest, starting at a network terminal located at the BLADE home.

It's basically multiple layers. You're in your (up to) 32 person squad and jab away at a squad mission (say, "kill 20 expand dongs, kill 10 yoshisaurs, etc") and once one of them has been checked off, one of these Squad Quests opens up and you can gather three of your squad buddies to do the quest together.

Thanks everyone for the clarification.

Found that part confusing between AI player characters and actual player characters.

I didn't want to watch too much of the video as well since I feel I've seen too much already.

But I was skipping through the video looking for a chat window in the UI but never saw one like they originally showed way way back.

Wondering how you communicate and coordinate strategies with other player characters during squad based missions.

Haha looking forward to it

Did they talk about online?

Yup. You can "borrow" other players' avatars as party membera. They can also give infos on quests. And you can do multiplayer-focused quests with up to 3 online players if I remember it correctly.

Edit: Above posts have more info.

Just the thought of going to raids with friends to fight gigantic badass looking monsters in mechs has gotten me on cloud 9

I don't know why I thought they're would be an actual Co-Op online mode.
I guess it seemed like a natural fit to the battle system, but probably not to the overall game.

I don't think you can do that...
Unless there's something I'm missing.

Yes you will be able to actually go out with 3 other real players in squad based missions. These missions will have prerequisites to unlock first but seems like a lot of the missions will be taking down world bosses.

pretty cool stuff!

I'm just hoping they give us an option of a chat channel and virtual keyboard on the gamepad.

Yes you are missing it. Check Chaos 17's post.

This is ridiculous. It's as if someone plucked all that I would want in a mecha game straight from my mind. It solves every problem Xenogears had with it: rather than forcing you to step out of mecha for over half of the game, then limiting it further with non-regenerating fuel, this lets you combine and balance both gameplay types at any time. The part where fuel regenerates simply by going on foot for a bit is so simple yet so crucial.

Aside of this it has customization that would make Armored Core and Front Mission proud, weapons that would not look out of place with even the flashiest of SRW's Real Robots, and a battle system that improves on what was my favorite last gen RPG. What more could anyone ask for?

I think I'll waste many many hours exploring and reexploring everything possible with the Doll. Really intrigued about the different possibilities.

When the game was first shown it was believed that could be the case when people were guessing what some of the "windows" were for.

Yeah, it's like the dev knew that we've been waiting for a mecha rpg for a really long time. I'm still surprised how they though to bring the mecha system some depth while not just a skin (yes, I'm reapeating myself, lol).

I'm just glad that basically your whole party has mechs, I thought they would take the easy way out and kinda just have your party members just disappear when you get in your mech and kinda leave you to assume they like got in with you or whatever, but no, they just straight get mechs aswell and you just have a crew that's always on point with you, being fresh to death.

Those are honestly one of the best mech designs I've seen for a long time. Simply beautiful. And that ending. I'm so eager to hear hands-on impressions now.

does the fuel regenerate or the doll's health regenerate?

The number of equipment slots is a huge improvement over Xenosaga Episode 1. I wonder if there are any restrictions on weapons beyond slots though. I hope not; it would be awesome to arm a mech with 7 to 9 swords (depending on if there are any swords that fit into the arm slots). I really like the weapon variety too: everything from machine guns to homing missiles to bit weapons, with a few really original weapons mixed in such as that shoulder charge Heathorn.

Anyone catch what the differences between Light, Medium, and Heavy Dolls are, other than HP and vehicle mode handling?
does the fuel regenerate or the doll's health regenerate?
Looks like both. Mech HP regenerates just as fast as character HP, while fuel regenerates fairly slowly.

EDIT: However, it looks like mechs can lose parts such as arms, which need to be replaced in a garage.

This looks fantastic, but good god the pitiful preliminary (I hope) facial animations on the PCs themselves is distracting as hell

This seems like a particular kind of game I never knew I wanted. Hopefully this will erase the chip I've had on my shoulder about the last 1/3 of Xenogears for 15 years

Wow, this game is looking great with a lot of content! I'm still hoping for a winter 2015 release for the west.

Hmm... Are people saying that Zelda got delayed for this ignoring that it comes out on the 29th in Japan?

Oh snap, you can use the classic pro controller? Awesome news.

Actually it says the Wii U Pro Controller, the Classic Controller Pro for what it says there can't be used.

Most likely final, game comes out in Japan in the 29th of the month, its most likely Gold already. I assume there will be some in-engine cutscenes with more detailed facial animations, but there won't be an overhaul at this point.

This is just something the team threw together for the direct, they aren't specially animated for it so they are most likely just a reminder ng the standard model facial animations and just syncing them with the direct voices.

Gonna make a blue purple and black mech and call it Grand Lightning Striker: Cobalt or some such.

Maybe I'll lose the lightning. Grand Striker: Cobalt sounds better :)
