Super Arcade denied permit by the city council of Azusa by 3-1 vote

They should continue negotiating with Walnut. No idea how they weren't able to maintain the lease there, seems odd.

cause the landlord increased the rent after Watson renovated the lot

Fucking Walnut would do that. I mean housing prices going through the roof has been good for homeowners but it must suck for businesses.

God dammit, Super Arcade has been with the city for over a decade as well. Don't want to see it go :(

Those darn teenaged hooligans and their rowdy ways. Probably just use an arcade as cover to smoke their cigarettes and hold rumbles with other ruffians when they aren't trying to push marihuana on young children.

^what must be going through these senile people's minds

Is public urination and arcade-goers a thing or something? Is there a stereotype I've never heard of or a study?

The whole thing was just them trying to imply "black people", more or less

It wasn't about actual substantiated facts or statistics. Probably a lot more of this to come during Presidential primaries

Watching that meeting was astounding. Three of the council members were bound determined, from the start, to turn down Watson. Only one guy actually tried to understand them and he tried to convince the other council members but to no avail. It made me really frustrated seeing that -- the fact they didn't even do any recent research about arcades is what's truly baffling, though.

It really does. but it's the lowest rent area close to their previous location.

Most likely the nearest place to go next is pomona, which is another twenty miles away.

Maybe Pomona might be a better choice because of the college scene there? Seems to be alot more nightlife in that neck of the woods also.

Fuck, Mike told me it was already a done deal a month ago. Wow.
Probably figured this would be more a formality or something? I wouldn't think a city council would reject something like an arcade, not before seriously thinking about it anyway and remembering they can be that daft.

Anyone know what I can do to help? I live around that area and would love the arcade to open up.

Go to the next hearing and represent. I believe it's on the 15th of July. Right now there is only one person from Azusa that said they liked the idea of an arcade. You just YOU can make a huge difference if you show up and your a from Azusa. Come with a well articulated argument as to why this arcade would be good for the community and you good sir could help save Super Arcade.

“I feel as if my heart was torn out,” he told me. “I feel as if the world is very unfair and as someone taking all the right steps to get things done, my efforts fell short due to the fact that the people in charge were very ignorant socially and the outcome was predetermined. The next step is to keep fighting and sending emails to the proper city officials in attempt to overturn this judgement.”

When the vote game through, Watson said it was “hard to maintain composure.”

“I feel like I have a whole community on my back and I failed for the moment,” he said.

As for next steps, Watson intends to attend the next city council meeting on July 15. He encourages fans to show up, as well, and be “positive, well dressed, well mannered, and well spoken people who are genuinely wanting this to succeed.”

I literally gasped when I read the thread title.

I wish I had a decent arcade anywhere near me. I would be pissed if my town did this.

Come to WV. Fourhorseman comic shop is already a hit in the Morgantown area for Smashers and various games. Got a ton of folks in there after the mall closes and no one complains. Be nice if an arcade would buy their way into the same mall. Pretty decent area with inexpensive hotels. Not really any sort of night life out here to worry about getting out of hand.

Man, you can't let those Fighting Game thugs into your town. Next thing you know, everyone's throwing Hadokens through your grocery store and your quiet park is full of people "getting hyped" as the kids say it. I have no idea what that means, but I'm pretty sure it's about the drugs. No sir, those folks are Trouble with a capital T and that rhymes with P as in what will be running down the side of your business wall!

The reason why Azusa would have worked was because of the cheap rent. Nobody could have foresaw that the city council of Azusa has an extremely high view of themselves and their city that an arcade was beneath them.

Havent been to Azusa in a couple years but it seemed like a ghost town when i was there. Dont know why they would turn that down. Well i do know, but damn it blows.

This is a damn shame. I live on the other side of the country, but just listening to the arguments put out by these ancient women are so cliche old fogey talk from a comedy movie, it's a little depressing.

I'm listening to it here, not the twitch stream

"what if children go to this arcade after school?"

somebody think of the children

What if they just hang out doing nothing with no accountability.

Their attitudes led me to believe they'd rather have an empty lot than the arcade.

Super Arcade got a meeting with the mayor next Tuesday.

Good stuff. People were tweeting and emailing like crazy.

This was my thought, I probably should've voiced that better.

Giving youngins a safe place to be and something to do where the parents can rest easy that they're not getting in trouble or doing drugs seems like a good thing to me. A bored kid is a kid that gets into trouble, at least it was that way for me.

"We have to protect the children from getting bodied."

Watson made a blog post earlier this week. He didn't seem to elaborate on what happened at the meeting this week, but there is more insight from him about what happened at the public hearing.

He also did say on Twitter that social media was having an effect, but would not say if that was a good or bad thing.
