Estimates falling for Pixels. Now looking around 25-26M opening.

Variety is reporting a close race between Ant-Man and Pixels for first place this weekend. It also looks like Minions is having another shitty weekend hold. I wouldn't mind seeing Inside Out finish on top for animated films this year domestically.

Variety also posted this salt in Sony's wounds over those Pixels estimates

Half of that is Sandler's fanbase that will watch anything.
One of my patients today said he was excited to see it tonight. I started to voice my own reservations when he went off on how much he enjoyed The Cobbler.

There's just no saving some people

A deserved place. Sony Pictures has to be the worst of the big Hollywood studios.

John Greene is such a trash writer, it's upsetting how successful he's been. I've had the displeasure of reading his 3 most popular novels due to recommendations. He's pretty much Nicholas Sparks for tweeners. Is Paper Towns expected to blow up like Fault in Our Stars?
A lot of my students read John Green, and even they think Paper Towns is trash. They all love Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars.

For the weekend? Damn. I thought it'd be huge. Wonder how it'll do internationally.

His highest grossing film worldwide is Hotel Transylvania, which grossed $210m overseas. But that was animated and animated films tend to do well overseas. His highest grossing live action film overseas is Grown Ups 2, which did $113m. Both of these are films from the past 3 years. Pixels could be his best overseas film, but I can't see it saving the film if that domestic OW estimate is correct.

So in a very rare post-parenthood event, I managed to catch two films in the past week: Jurassic World and Inside Out.

I have no idea why critics were so lenient on Jurassic World. The dialogue and plot were terrible to the point that it detracted from everything else, even if you go in expecting a dumb but entertaining action film. I'd put it on par with something like Attack of the Clones. The effects were nice, and a few of the action sequences were well done. Not so much everything else. It's clearly resonating with its audience however, so kudos to Universal, even if I will probably skip out on the next film.

Inside Out was the best Pixar film in years, and was probably made better by the fact that I have a daughter who is about a year and a half old. I'm glad to see that audiences are rewarding Pixar's return to something original, even if I am unsure what children are getting out of this film. I guess it was colorful.

JW is a forgettable popcorn flick that did enough to apparently satisfy audiences appetite for a new entry in the series.

IO is like you said some of Pixar's best work in years and right up there with their best. It would be great if it took the top spot from Minions which is mediocre. My youngest niece got more laughs out of Minions than IO while my eldest niece enjoyed IO more.

the infinity war will have thanos get the infinity gauntlet so he can finally achieve his wish of being a dinosaur. and then in part 2 the only way to fight back is to have everyone be dinosaurs. iron man builds a dinosaur suit, thor visits the dinosaur gods, and spider-man is bitten by a radioactive dinosaur, which starts to overpower his radioactive spider blood.

I want this.

Friday Studio Estimates

1) Pixels - $9.2m
2) Ant-man - $7.2m
3) Minions - $6.7m
4) Paper Towns - $6.3m
5) South Paw - $6.2m

Ant-man or maybe Minions will win the weekend.

And that estimate is including the Thursday previews for Pixels as well.

Looks like I was (thankfully) wrong about Pixels. Going off of reactions to the trailer I had seen I thought it would be bigger. But it seems that people were smart enough not to see it.

I shall never forgive Sandler for tainting what could have been an amazing concept.
Minions continuing to drop hard, wont get much higher than 300M at this rate
Inside Out will likely hold the domestic animation crown (unless The Good Dinosaur excels of course)

The performance of JW2 will be very interesting. Many wanted to see JW, but many impressions were negative. Just like with FF funnily enough.

Interesting that minions continues to drop hard each week. Might not make 1 billion ww after all?

Minions hit the cliff.

If I remember the numbers correctly (again these numbers are from my theater I work at) this is what I think will happen:

1. Antman
2. Pixels
3. Southpaw
4. Paper Towns
5. Inside Out

Your place not show minions? Or Trainwreck?

Talk of the domestic Top 10 had me looking at the Worldwide Top 10. I forgot that Jurassic World marked the end of Lord of the Rings' reign in that list. Pirates was kicked out in 2013, and Harry Potter is likely out in 2016 or the year after that. All of the big early 2000s series are being passed by.
