I came in here to share my delight in seeing Mario at the olympics but this thread is weird. I like the arts! Just not the weird marketing debate going on for some reason.

The video was very cool, and I'm pretty excited to see what Japan has planned for the 2020 Games. Unfortunately though, equating Mario with Shinzo Abe has ruined the character forever. Good thing I was never much of a Mario fan to begin with. Just gross.

Never give a damn care about Abe here lol. But i thought Abe is beloved by Japanese people? I do remember some controversies on rearming Japan once again which had quite a protest. Especially when i am currently visiting Nagasaki, i remember several old people try to recruit me lol to join their cause and signs for the protest only to know that i am tourist lol.^^

Yes, they were part of the bid campaign awareness for Tokyo 2020 back in 2013. This is the artist.

Also, holy shit?

They just had a movie sequel 3 months ago!

3 months ago is old news now. Now we need the FE idol and Walkure to save the Olympic.^_^

Joking aside, never really follow the series lol as it is quite boring.T_T

I think Ive found it here:

http://yaplog.jp/masineiyuden/archive/895

Title is in Japanese ファミコン風雲児対ファミ拳リュウ

romaji is Famicon fuuunji tai Fami Kenryuu

Says its from the 80s so its a pretty old manga. I might have to go looking for this the next time I'm in a bookoff or mandrake. But looking on amazon Japan, its quite expensive so must be rare.

Maturity, bitches.
I'm expecting something for One Piece seeing as that manages to have a presence in every tourist gift shop in Japan.

I have read some impressive mental gymnastics trying to spin this as a bad thing / waste of time etc. I think some of the people in this thread should attend the next Olympic Games with such gymnastic skills. You'd win the gold medal in every discipline.

Anyway, that was really cool and put a smile on my face.

Nazi Mario?

No, people in Japan still do sports day salutes that way when they give speeches like an oath before an event. They never changed the salute, even though they know the salute has a different meaning elsewhere. Always strange when I see it in person myself here.

Well, Japan has always don't give a fcuk on what others are talking about them. Which in a way why they end up this unique lol.(In both good and bad way. wkwkwk.^^)

Yeah seems like they would just be asked seeing as there were other iconic Japanese videogame stars there. People just want to be negative.

I felt the same too.

Mario is one of the famous things Japan has made. JOC probably asked to let them use it.
Nintendo might be even earning some money out of it to let them use it.
Its probably famous than any other characters including various animes Japan has made.
Like that blue cat Doraemon that also appeared, which isn't probably popular other than in Japan.
I've heard its been shown in Asia and in the US, but I've never heard of it being popular.
Mario definitely worth featuring in 2020.

Lololol. On the bold. Doraemon is easily one of the biggest Japanese anime product in the world lol. Maybe it is not that famous in US for i don't know what reason, but it is easily the childhood of many kids in Asia here.

Hell, it's Stand by Me Movie take down Frozen in China lol. Thats how big the IP is.

http://en.rocketnews24.com/2015/06/...ut-the-freeze-on-frozens-popularity-in-china/

U should check the wiki too to see the unpopular show that already had 38 movies still on going till now lol.

Pshhh, that's only if you're making it as Reina and Makina.

I'm Kumo-Kumo up in this thread.

Lol. I'm more on FreFre and KanaKana type lol.^_^

Doraemon is pretty large across Asia, I've seen it playing in India a bunch personally

Thanks for the input. I didn't know it was "that" big in Asia.
I obviously know its big in Japan since I've watched it a lot. (stopped watching after the voice actors/actresses changed though)
Honestly, I thought Dragon Ball or Kureyon Shinchan was a lot more popular in Asia than Doraemon lol

Doraemon is easily the biggest anime that encompass both child and adult market here. When that Stand by Me movie come out, many of us who are children during the anime broadcast time, had become adult. Many of us returned to watched that movie only to cry like baby.T_T I mean nostalgia and all the memories with the sad story hit us hard.T_T

Dragon Ball and Kureyon Shin Chan is also popular for sure but not on the level on Doraemon. Doraemon is even now the ambassador of Japan lol. Thats how big the blue cat is.^_^

Lol. Really here, i don't know a lot about their politics lol. I just remember Ishihara as Tokyo Governor who killed Aki Sora manga as it is too lewd lol.^_^

Wait a minute....... u mean Abenomics is not a praise here?

i dunno where you're getting your idea of japanese politics from but it doesn't seem accurate

Doraemon was what my cousins grew up with in Vietnam (and sailor moon). Shit I remember taking a photo with a Doraemon at an amusement park when I was a kid.

And now they got this new series airing everywhere INCLUDING on Disney? He's eternal.

There was a bunch of Doraemon merch in supermarkets in Thailand....that was definitely weird. All the Doraemon videos on youtube are from India or Indonesia etc...interesting.

I like how the BBC described Mario as a cartoon character.

They are kinda not wrong though.

Haha. In the 90's to early 2000 eras, Indonesia had been a junkies for all Japanese products lol. We watch all their anime, till now had so many manga localized every week, follow their J-Drama and love their J-Pop lol. It is around 2004 or 2005, Indonesia is kinda burn out of Japanese product. It is also a few year in the future, Korean boom happened so now a days, Japan drama had been quite rare to show up on our television channel. At least, manga and anime are still alive.^_^

It is also probably because Indonesia biggest investor had been japanese lol. And also, JKT 48 also exist in Indonesia lol. And it is also official from the AKB 48 producer group.^_^

wow..Indonesian....

yeah Doraemon is big in Asia..but still kind of surprise that Mario take the top honor, seeing by how Abe cosplay as him, in this Olympic ads

I loved the whole presentation. Whoever was responsible for the presentation obviously new not only Mario is famous world wide but also Captain Tsubasa and Doraemon are huge for a specific demographic in places such as Europe and Brazil.
The music was great too. I don't know about you guys but it left me super pumped for 2020!

Doraemon is HUUUUGE in Asia. They did a 100 Doraemon tour around Asian cities a few years ago, it was amazeballs.

They did the same in some channels here in Brasil.

Lol. it seems the damage caused by not including Sonic run deep lol.^_^

Considering how Nintendo name and popularity is rising currently and how Japanese government even mentioned the "Pokemon GO"effect, i can see why they choose Mario lol.^^(I mean, posing as Ash who is a jobber or becoming Pikachu is not a good idea right.T_T)

Mario could be described as a cartoon character if you go by the broader definition of the word rather than the median definition.

Really happy with Tokyo push and support for Paralympics here.^_^ I always feel the player is always underrated even when they are able to perform so great even with their disabilities.

Great artist there also. A bit sad that there is no Takehiko Inoue drawing some of the art there when he had a great work on a manga also about wheel chair basket ball called REAL.

At least, i can see Urasawa Naoki and Chiba Tetsuya drawing again lol. I had been missing Tetsuya here for so long after Ashita no Joe.T_T

I will be the Makina to your Reina.

What a coincidence, i am also a Reina believer lol.^_^
