In defense of that game...the gameplay was sublime.

Yeah of course, as I said above, without a doubt its gameplay is awesome. A fair few reviews said the story is too though, and while that is subjective, compared to other MGS games the story is just trash, not to mention incomplete.

Rage barely has any story and it scores 79. Telltale's The Walking Dead barely has any gameplay in it and it scores 89.

Video games doesn't have to excel in everything to be scored high.

Sure, but FF does have some good story peaks, and like it or not for Square many fans still enjoy the member berries of "member FF on the PS1?".

Fully agree. The characters, the world, and just the general experience of playing the game is why I love FF. The story is important too of course but for me, the characters development and how they interact with one another is the driving force for me. It's why I could never get into XIII; it was filled with unjoyable characters and weak character interactions on top of an even weaker plot in my opinion. If I looked at VIII story objectively, the time compression storyline is probably a bunch of bullshit but I love the characters, the world, music, etc. enough that it didn't matter in the end.

Yeah, exactly. Going on a journey through a unique world is the appeal, to me. If I don't think the story is very good in retrospect, that's alright. Riding a chocobo with the guys through Cleigne, listening to some dialogue that gives the characters and their relationships more depth and finding an optional dungeon with some cool weapon or whatever at the end, that's what I'm here for. I'm more interested in the Brotherhood anime part of the game, I suppose.

When they're facing major adversities on their journey, I'll be more interested in how it pushes them to the limit and tests their bonds than the reasoning behind said adversity, how much actual sense it makes and how believable it is.

That would be awesome as fuck imo :p

They should play Rules of Nature during that fight.

I think a JRPG-esque story might be a hard sell for those not accustomed to its style and character tropes.

You have game likes Watch Dogs, MGSV and Fallout 4 scoring in he 80's and 90's range despite have a wide array of flaws in narrative, game design and performance aspects (imo).

Then you have NieR which got hammered by critics, despite many people who played it being grabbed by the story, world and music etc....

So I personally won't be putting much stock in to the critics assessment of the story. I have a feeling it will already be an uphill battle due to the shoddy localization on that front. Since I'm accustomed to writing, character archetypes and will be playing in Japanese, I won't panic if they are critical. I'm far more interested in what they say about the game design.

yeah. personally I don't really understand the criticism of XIII's melodrama, like it should be any different? it's from japan. not to say japan only produces melodrama, or there aren't better told stories, but would it hurt to understand the cultural context of the work?

the series has an odd history in the west because its peak popularity came when western dev output wasn't a fraction of what it is now, and technological limitations forced the series to abstract a lot of the more polarising japanese affectations (see the criticism of FF7 cloud to AC cloud).

XIII in particular gets a bad rap not only because it was a mismanaged, strange game with massively high expectations, but also because it was completely at odds with western tastes at the time. which likely was a complete surprise to square, as it's hardly distinguishable from X or X-2 on the surface.

What I dont understand about all the pessimism regarding the metacritic score....

You know Dragon Age Inquisition had like a 91 or a 94 or something right? Check what the top metacritic games are right now.

Y'all seem to forget that open world games tend to automatically get no lower than high 80's. And an open world game that actually has a story, definitely amazing soundtrack, etc?

I think VIII was up to interpretation, especially after having read that Squall is dead theory on the Internet. I realized then that from that perspective, the game had a lot of sense, but in reality, it could meant something completely different for someone else.

I think ff xv. While ff xv previews were all good, and reviews maybe will be around mid-eighty, i can't see TLG reaching 80 metacritic. At best it will reach high 70. This is because FF XV doesn't feel old in its gameplay, while a couple reviews already mentioned the game being a bit disappointing because of its clunky controls and stubborn Trico AI.

I agree. My first FF game. Just amazing. Dat Triple Triad tho hhnngg!

I will admit the draw system is tiring, but the summons and the world is quite beautiful. Localization killed squall tho.

You need to realize that Trico has the personality of a cat. Would a cat obey to every of your request? Not always.

I loved FF8. It's right behind FF7 for me., but game could be easily broken and if I gave you the basic plot points of the game you'd think it was shit. Probably like any other FF game really lol.

I think it's a given that localization from that era really was on a tier of its own.

Everything from FF7's "Marlene was cried herself silly" to FF9's still somewhat jerky lines, to Legend of Dragoon's "Tut, such a trifle wound" to RE's opening cinematic.
 
Im sure Square will put the PC port of 8 on PS4 eventually, once it hits the game will be cake, drawing will be much more tolerable in 3x speed.
I don't remember hating the game, I think I was just stuck in this one boss who kept killing me so I decided to take a break. Then my PS3 got corrupted and erased all my data...

I absolutely love Final Fantasy VIII with all my heart even though the story is pretty stupid and the gameplay has its tedious aspects.

The thing is, even if XV's story ends up being stupid like VIII's, as long as it's entertaining (in a good way), well-presented, and has a lot of epic moments, I don't think I'll mind much.

But it will be nice if SE finally admits to themselves that they need to hire good writers (and have a better localization team)

I honestly don't understand why we don't have FFVIII and FFIX yet on PS4.

For whatever reason it seems to take Square years to port a PC game to PS4. As I said expect them to possibly announce FF8 on PS4 with trophies this December or next E3, but it take till December 2019 to come out.

At this point I'd rather just have FF8/FF9 from the PC on PS4 and call it quits. I recently finished the FF7 PC port and enjoyed the trip down memory lane. I have very little faith the FF7 remake isn't butchered in some way. As much as it was amazing to finally have it announced, trust to not have it massively tampered with is at an all time low for me.

At least with the FF PC ports, and FF12 HD remaster, you're getting the original games.

Man I wish the shops here would import the games from the leak countries. They always import R1 and R2 version games and sell at a ridiculous markup anyway

Late on the random VIII love upthread, but here's where I believe it excels:

Its atmosphere. Now, to be sure, I think there are a couple of Final Fantasies with even stronger atmosphere, but that's a testament to the franchise at-large, not any shortcoming on VIII's part. In developing this game, Square had a very particular concept in mind -- a sort of WW1-esque fantasy realm with late-plot touches of 1950's futurism. It's an absurd mesh and an utterly bizarre thought, and yet it completely sells its premise. I can easily take VIII's crazy train at face value (and I'm not talking about Selphie). There are beautiful relaxed zones, militaristic chest-pounding zones, mysterious fantastical zones, whimsical flying-car zones... and even a castle at the heart of compressed time. It's all so weird. Yet they found just the right art style to make a certain ambiance click.

Its cast chemistry. Final Fantasy VIII does not have my favorite cast in the series. In fact, I don't believe it has my third favorite cast. But one of the things it does quite well is that it arranges its scenes such that many of the moment-by-moment interactions between its characters, especially during the "down time" between major plot beats, is highly effective. At one point, you'll be tasked with helping to organize a musical performance. Your party members shine here, as they shine in several other points. It's a bit of a slice-of-life angle amidst a mind-bending sizably-scoped narrative and it makes a somewhat lacking story distinctly memorable nevertheless.

Its soundtrack. I adore FFVII's OST, but I think if I step back and analyze things a bit more objectively, I'm of the opinion that VIII's might be the very best in the franchise. It's technically detailed, it enhances the aforementioned atmosphere virtually every single time, its numerous battle themes are amazingly implemented considering the limitations of PlayStation 1 tech. Each arrangement complements its setting, without exception. I think its overworld theme is a little weak relative to some of the others in the series, but it still works pretty well here nevertheless.

Its drive to experiment. Say what you will of the Junction System, but I find it just weird enough to work despite its jank. The age-old criticism that drawing spells is like watching water boil isn't really as relevant as many people believe it is; it is a far handier thing to explore other gameplay systems in search of 100 junctionable spells. Finding magic in the wild is fun. Getting your groove on with some Triple Triad, collecting magazines in order to learn how to upgrade your gunblade, surfing over the high seas with a giant floating fortress that looks straight out of an impressionist painting... it's all very stylized and very different.

The depth of its summon system. I think FFX is the only entry which really comes close to making me feel the way I do about FFVIII's ideas in this regard. There's just so much depth here. Sure, it ultimately comes down to selecting learnable abilities from a list, but you're doing that for each of, like, what, 16 or so summon monsters? Maybe more? And there are quite a few you've got to do some searching in order to discover, and an appreciable number will need to be fought before they're yours to command, and many of those learnable abilities enhance other gameplay avenues in real ways. It's neat.
