Tom Warren: Insiders are backpedaling because not many inside MS know what Phil will say

It's interesting how all of these insiders were on this train after MS laid off all those people. Because no one ever laid off ever wants to hurt the company that laid them off by being vindictive and spreading BS to hurt that company.

Now they're finding out the "MS employee" who told them this stuff could've been lying so they're quickly backtracking before Phil can debunk anything.
The spin...

All we have to do is look at sales data, market share and GP subs.

Kinda like we've always done.

Yea but a day after Phil Tweeted you're seeing people backtrack. They probably didn't expect MS to say anything and wanted to ride the wave of outrage/confirmation bias clicks/engagement.

They are backtracking because they don't have a clue what will or won't be announced and don't want to destroy what little credibility they had in the first place.

Information started to come out about this towards the tail end of last year, but at that stage it was just murmurs. Then there have been the comments from the CFO and Nadella on their vision to release games on all platforms but people didn't want to believe any of it or see it for what it was.

What has sparked everything to go into overdrive was the latest PC patch of Hi Fi Rush being datamined and the exclusive t-shirts being found, indicating the game is being prepped to release on two more platforms. That was the first piece of tangible evidence the public have had and people wanted clarity.

Bethesda refused to comment on the tshirts when they were reached out to by several journalists and it's resulted in people and journalists investigating via their sources. Some of those sources have said everything is going multiplat, some are saying it's only some games, some are saying they don't have a clue, and some are saying it's still all in a state of flux so anything can happen. Because of this there's now a ton of conflicting information out there.

But one thing is for sure, if nothing was true and nothing was about to change in a significant way, Xbox or Phil himself would have outright debunked the rumours by now.

It's bizarre to think it, but the actual worst thing Phil could do next week is come and say none of it is true. Because who in the ever loving fuck is going to believe him, other than the desperate fan boys?

If no Xbox major games are coming to Playstation, that's a very easy tweet to put out. It doesn't take a week to decide on how to say it, and anyone with half a brain knows that.

If they decide to backtrack he could say something along the lines of "after careful consideration and after fan feedback yadayadaya".

Which would basically acknowledge the fact that they were planning to do something but have since changed their minds.

But that would leave a question - why were they considering porting their games in the first place and what would stop them doing it again?

That's one way to describe a race to the bottom.

You would think that free to play and mobile games didn't exist for people like this. It's insane. They don't care what they play, or how shit it is, as long as it's "cheap".

GP and even MS 1st party elevated AA gaming. I didnt say that is all AA gaming. I just wish people gave me 10% charity to try and hear what I'm saying.
No they really didn’t…Devolver Digital has had way more impact in that regard, releasing some pretty stellar games regularly and successfully.
You’re clearly referring to games like Grounded and Pentiment, neither of which ‘sold’ and since GP lets everyone who could access it do so for ‘free’ its hardly elevating their success at all.
Like 7 million plays on a £10 sub does not trump 7 million sales at say £20-30, it just doesnt.
Just to add as well, Helldivers 2 is out this week, that is a AA title that has received proper marketing and even a physical release, that is how you ‘elevate’ a AA game…

I don't think even if he said that it'd be likely to be true. These monolithic companies don't take these decisions easily, and don't change their plans easily either. I bet the plan to put XBox games on Ps5 has been on the cards for quite a while now. If Phil says 'they've listened' and it's not happening... he means it won't be happening just yet.

Imagine him referring to the people that were saying "go 3rd party".

My guess:
- Xbox becomes a semi-open platform that runs windows and Xbox game launcher. They accidentally make Steam machines a thing because you can just install whatever.
- Games released on all platforms basically around the same time
- Some goodies for the Xbox storefront

Also they sue other platforms over the “gatekeeper” EU laws since they make an open platform.
If Xbox ran windows I'd get one instead of a second gaming PC.

I find it kind of funny that so many PS fans are apparently still salty about MS' acquisitions and are now dancing around frothing at the mouth at the thought of Microsoft's demise (or at least in the traditional sense)
This has nothing to do with it.

It's the sheer arrogance of MS that's coming back to bite them. Now that shit's funny.

They never completely recovered from the Xbox One debacle (Don Mattrick, you reading this?). And in trying to gain back a solid userbase they tried many half-assed things. None of them worked.

The whole "We hear you" should've been done prior to the Xbone launch. They would have had a far better footing today..

But no. Its poor business choice upon poor business choice that put them here and they fucking deserve it.
Grabbing developers in hopes to gain an audience has backfired and cost them billions. A megaton of a fuckup.

Whatever they do they are not going to backpedal anything. Results are bad and they need to start making profit from the billion dollars purchases. What they can do is delay the announcements to the last minutes like: "Next week we are releasing Starfield to PS5".

It goes even further back than that, they never recovered from Kinect absolutely kneecapping any momentum they had from the 360. When Sony was putting out bangers like UC3, TLOU, GoW3, etc Xbox shit the bed and rolled around in it.

Ultimately, MS have realised the console industry is one that’s next to impossible to grow market share significantly without your competitors fucking things up and driving customers away.

None of the things they’ve done are game changers. Gamepass isn’t viable without significant growth, which they’re not getting, and pouring hundreds of millions into new game development isn’t going to move the needle nearly as much as needed.

The studios they’ve bought have had middling output, certainly nothing to consider investing in a different console.

Releasing games on PlayStation almost feels inevitable. Opens up a market MS just couldn’t crack otherwise.

It was a cool attempt to offer consumers more games at a lower price but sadly they rejected it. People prefer to pay $70 for a single game than $10 for 5-6 games.
I wonder why customers, specially those that do not have a lot of free time, have chosen to buy the games they want to play and have it forever in their libraries instead of renting it at 10 usd per month with a possibility of being removed from the service before they're done with it.

The continued parroting of "game pass is great value" is always so weird to me.

I guess it sort of is, if you just look at it in widget terms of, "oh, I get x number of products for y price." But that's not at all how people view games.

If someone wants Mario Kart, they're not going to look at XBOX and say, "Well, I want Mario Kart, but Game Pass is such great value, I'll pay money for thousands of pieces of shit I don't want instead of the one thing I actually do want." That will never, ever happen. If someone wants a PS6 and Spider-man 3, they're not going to say, "Oh man, well, I could get Gears of War AND Halo 4 and 5 and a bunch of other things I couldn't give a fuck about, or, I can spend the money where I want and get the thing I want." Value is subjective.

No one is going to forgo getting a Switch 2 with Metroid Prime 4 just to get fucking Starfield and Halo Infinite and Redfall and some third party games on gamepass because cult leader Aaron "I look like a fuckin' twat making an x symbol," Greenberg says, "Get Good Value Game Pass instead, brother".

xbox fandom in a nutshell man, these dudes whole lives 'seem' to revolve around how xbox is perceived, and thats why they take it so hard and things are coming full circle for xbox. All these years of cap'n when the data clearly didnt reflect what these guys were tooting on game forums and twitter in there little echo chambers is now coming to a head and its time to pay the piper.

As i said in another thread a week or so ago, i expect alot of account suicides in the coming weeks.
If the shoe was on the other foot, it would be similiar or worse. Don't try to act like sony fanboys are above the rest. Actually he articuled his point and didn't attack anyone, don't really understand how it is allowed to just pile on the guy for one opinion.

Its done guys. It literally makes sense to pivot at this point. Nothing else to say. Series consoles and GP were a last try at a golden age in gaming, and a resurgence of AA diversity, and consumers rejected it.
Yes but that's Xbox's failings, not the customers. For me, they had everything to win at the beginning. And coming from an X1X which I loved, its been very disappointing to see it all go to shit. But its not my fault that its been managed so appallingly.

Golden age of gaming? Delusion. You're seeing Xbox management in its stride right this very moment. And its shambolic. Time to wake up and see the reality and for once put the blame where it should be...

And typically gaming trends can be at odds with other digital subscriptions.

I was subscribed to Gamepass last year, then BG3 came out, took up pretty much all of my gaming time for months, so I cancelled it. Same thing with Elden Ring.

The price is significant enough for me to pay attention to when I’m not getting any value, which is most of the time really. New games can be absolutely massive and one can mean I don’t need access to hundreds of others I have no interest in.
I have a backlog, and I will want to play new games this year that aren’t on gamepass. There’s just no value there for me.

Usually people tell me also I should stack years of gamepass to get it cheaper but I think that’s an even worse waste of money when I know I will go months without using it.

I see a lot of people crying they stacked like 5+ years of gamepass and now they want out of Xbox. Like dude, you bought 5+ years of a service where you have no idea if it’ll have anything for you, or if you’ll have time. That’s on you.

And if you are wrong ? Perma bans for everyone who says they are leaving the console business?

😂

They are not leaving the business. There's still money to be made in gaming and that's what they're going for. They will no longer be in competition with Sony though. Hence the releasing of their own games on the PS5. They are basically throwing in the towel.

I said console business not gaming entirely. They would never do that just about spending billions on publishers.

Well yeah, any "hardcore" fan bases in general. But please do tell me, what exactly is happening?

I have a feeling Microsoft will continue to string xbox fans on by saying shit like xbox will still have exclusives and leave out the fact that they'll only be timed exclusives and will be ported to other platforms later. Xbox fans will do what they usually do and say that Microsoft listened and wank off to Phil spencer.

There's no way they can be selective with which games to port because that will piss off their other studios. Why do others get to expand their reach but we are stuck on xbox? All their 1st party teams will want in on the action and so they should, because xbox is a graveyard right now.

30 minute pre-recorded event that could've been done in a single tweet: "We are listening, we hear you. We are pulling the plug on Xbox."

Likely the message

Sadly no matter what is said the funeral will be allowed to continue

They both chased Wii’s motion success and failed.

The big difference was Sony was investing in building their internal studios, while Microsoft was buying timed exclusivity. In the long run Sony’s strategy paid off, as they have some amazingly talented first party studios.
