I can't believe they're taking so long to make this crap. Sucks that they give Asuka a stupid ass eyepatch, what's next, random lolis?

I thought about making a thread but I just finished 1.0 and 2.0. Some really enjoyable stuff outside of Mari who just feels out of place in the story.

Anyways, long time to wait for the next one.

On the contrary, I like the eyepatch. Wished they lopped off one of her hands and replaced it with a hook.

It'd be nice if they could use less CGI but I guess that's where anime is right now. I'm sure it will be fun, probably.

I was under the assumption Rebuild was just a remake of EVA. Does it go further than the original? or are there just extra scenes?

Masked Man

I said wow
I wasn't initially sold on Shikinami. Sohryu is basically the best character ever created, and it hurt to miss out on the brilliant development that the series provided for her. By comparison, Shikinami felt a little flat. But now...

How would that work? The sea turning red was something that happened within the life-time of the characters in Rebuild.

Unless by sequel we're meaning the end of End reset the timeline by only 15 years, reversing everything back to the moment of the second impact, just with changes? I honestly cannot think of any other way that would work as a sequel.

The second film barely resembled the original series.

Basically every line from
Kaworu
hints at it being a sequel, but there's no real evidence one way or the other yet.

I haven't even thought about that and now that I am, there is some evidence to that.

If I recall the exact quote,
Kaworu said "This time, I'll make you happy."

Okay, I think I'll be watching 1.0 and 2.0 again sometime soon.

5? Hrm.

There was End Of Evangelion, which is basically "the last two episodes of the series if we hadn't been incompetent and ran out of money". The superior way to watch Evangelion is to watch the series, skip the last two episodes and watch that film. It even is split in half, into two 'episodes'.

I haven't seen them, but I think there was also a film that was basically a summary edit of the entire series (minus the last two episodes) that also put in a few new scenes. Those scenes are included in the Platinum DVDs as part of the series anyway so I never needed to see the film itself.

Currently, Rebuild of Evangelion is pretty much a new take on the thing. Four films in the series, two are done and out. Film 1 is very similar to the original series. Film 2 is a complete "err, what?" though not in a bad way (pointless new fanservicey character aside).

Still from the same event, Katô said that some people in-the-know find the plot for those last parts to be "too dark". Guess we shouldn't expect a Disney ending.
I await this challenge!

Just watch The End of Evangelion.

The Rebuild movies are what is being discussed here.

The first movie of Rebuld is basically a retailing of the first few episodes of the series with new footage thrown in then the second movie completely goes into a different direction, with new characters, EVA's, and situations. The Rebuild is essentially a big brand-new storyline.

After how mehtastic 2.0 was, I'm not too hyped for this. Asuka with an eyepatch has me intrigued though, since I was expecting her to sit out 3.0. I definitely hope that CGI is not final. :\

And at the end of 1.0,
Kaworu said that Shinji is the Third Child again and that he never changes.

It probably is, if the 2.0 preview is any precedent when they aired 1.0 on TV.

I haven't seen Evangelion since way back when, Should I rewatch the original series or watch these new movies? Same question for Hellsing if anyones seen that new stuff too.

Thank ya kindly.

Nuh-uh.
Watch the final two episodes, and then later watch The End of Evangelion. Though I suppose you could do it the other way round and watch EoE first, then the TV ending, the film feels more 'final'.
I think the final two episodes are brilliant. Evangelion wouldn't be complete without them.

Rewatch the series, and then watch the films if it interests you.
And the best order is episodes 1-20, director's cut 21-24, 25-26, The End of Evangelion.

Asuka with an eyepatch just reeks of merchandise pandering. Then again, that sums up my feelings on the two movies so far. There's no...feeling behind these movies. No emotion. Nothing that really grabs the viewer and demands you watch it.

I sort of agree about Rebuild. It gets by on people's attachment to this world and these characters, but it doesn't stand on its own, outside of a few great scenes. However, I can think of many legitimate reasons for Asuka to be wearing the eyepatch that have nothing to do with merchandising. Shame that I can't say the same about Mari's existence.

You should really not check out a little Evangelion property called Anima. It...it might damage your mind.

I have the oddest memory of seeing Evangelion 2.0 in theaters (Viz theater in the Newpeople building in japan town in San Francisco, to be specific) where the ending teaser showed not that, but an overhead view where the little Reis were scrambling behind the real Rei. Am I just completely off here, or did they change that for 2.22's release to the image above?

Also, holy shit @ the Asuka footage :D :D :D

There was another shot, slightly overhead, where Kaworu is addressing offscreen figures. Based off the heights of their shadows, people have speculated they are Rei (III?) and the mini-Reis. Maybe the two shots blended together in your mind.

That picture of Rei reminds me...the most likely timeline theory is I think that this is
an alternate universe Shinji encounters during instrumentality in the original universe. Rei is wearing the same uniform in that shot that she wore as a transfer student in episode 26's alternate reality.

Any word on the TV series and previous, older movies being released in Blu-Ray?

I have the red monolith region 2 collection with the artbook and journals, and the transfer in that is glorious (for DVD standards), but I would like to have the whole thing in Blu-Ray.

Gah, I wish I had that. And it has a nice EoE transfer!
Gainax are doing HD remasters of their old work at the moment. Nadia is out on Blu-Ray in November, and Gunbuster in February. Evangelion can't be too far behind.

Oh, that makes sense (no it doesn't). Is there any difference between the home versions other than making of extras/etc?

Small added scenes, some audio/visual fixes, etc.

I think the concept of rebuild being a sequel to Eva would hinge on Shinji assuming the Godhead for a split-instant during the third impact at the end of Eva. Lots of theories seem to point to Gendo opposing the human instrumentality project or wanting to rebuild the world in a way that benefited him and Shinji was his agent in this.

Since Shinji was basically remaking reality or whatever in real time (or in control of third impact which was altering reality), one might theorize that after his breakdown on the beach at the end of EoE, he couldn't take it or something. And caused the world to be reset. But it's not as simple as merely going back in time 15 years. It's more that the world is rebuilt by moving matter around to simulate the world of 15 years ago. But stuff on the moon and such wasn't touched. Time wasn't reversed. Earth was merely "rebuilt" (REBUILD'D LOL) in an imperfect copy of pre-Angel battles Earth. But it was still post 2nd impact Earth, perhaps because that was the world Shinji was born into and all he knew.

Since it's really all just a simulation of Earth before the 3rd impact, there's rough edges. Or things that refused to be altered, perhaps. Or just remixed stuff and shit that's not in the right place.

Stay classy, Gainax, stay classy.

It's not like that's unusual for this series. 1.0 and 2.0 were both announced a year before they came out.

Are they pandering to people with eyepatch fetishes? Admittedly, I'm sure the reason for her wearing an eyepatch is going to be LOL worthy. Though Mari in 2.0 was totally thrown in for merchandising reasons.

I agree that the movies have been lackluster and not as engaging thus far.

God, I want Evangelion on Blu-ray so badly. I don't understand Gainax's problem. For fuck's sake, Gurren Lagann isn't even on Blu-ray yet.

The problem with this theory is that Shinji lost the power to change the world to his liking when he rejected instrumentality. He's not in control of anything anymore, and he's able to be hurt. It would also defeat the point of the ending, which I feel is that Shinji was finally, finally realizing that he couldn't run away from human contact, even if it was painful to him.
