Though not pertaining to NPD results, the following is interesting:

Nintendo of France GM Philippe Lavoue, has shared some 2013 sales numbers for Pokemon X & Y, Wii U, 3DS, 3DS, and Super Mario 3D World.

“3DS: 1 million+ (64% plus year over year) YTD (over the expectations)”
2DS: 180k
Pokemon X and Y: 584k YTD
The Wii U sold 178k in 2013 in France.
3D World: 98k YTD

How much did 3DS sell in the U.K. for comparison, 550k?

France did double damn.

I think the only data we have is >530k. I think it was even up YOY(2% I think)

Not focusing on such a small demographic? Axing proprietary memory cards? Games? Marketing?

Just throwing stuff out here.

The bolded so much. So fucking much. SD cards are serviceable for handhelds as 3DS is proving. They're cheap and they're fast enough and they're everywhere. At least with Blu-Ray Sony was trying to win a format war. What was the point here?

Ouch. Isn't Nintendo a strong brand in France?

They aren't pulling it. You can expect it to be around for the life of the ps4 as a peripheral that also has some of its own games, thats about it for America anyway. Just like they will continue to sell that DOA camera addon but wont be spending money making games for it or advertising it.

How is the camera DoA? It's currently selling pretty well.

Vita... we'll always have Wipeout 2048.

The DOA camera that was sold out for most of 2013.

I just realized how Nintendo can sell Wii U without the pad while without losing functionality.

Sell the console for $200. Sell the pad as a seperate controller for $100 dollars with innards that can carry small games. VC/eshop games, perhaps.

Kill the original 3DS, reduce 2DS and XL prices, and release 3DSU. It'd combines the 3DS with the Upad but has 2 analogue sticks and can play games for both.

Hypothetical brainfarting aside, I'd like to see 3DS as a Wii U controller. The touchscreen resolution is probably killing that idea though

Count me in as hoping for a $100 OLED Vita on clearance. Between the lack of games I want to play and memory card prices, I can't be bothered to buy it at a higher price.

I meant if they had never developed the Wii U and just kept at it with the Wii. Obviously this was not going to happen, but the Wii has more potential than the Wii U will ever have. And they dropped the Wii after 2010 leaving behind a shit ton of money to focus on a failure.
Wii sales fell like a brick in the latest years of the system, it suffer from a heavy fatigue and probably high market saturation, Nintendo had no choice but announce the succesor really quick.

Those aren't really the kind of games that I'm interested in, though.

Good for people that are into Harem Heaven, Yandere Hell or whatever, but that's not my jam.

Why did you even buy the system then? The writing has been on the wall forever now honestly.

Even the 3DS for all its great games has basically zero western support.

I don't get all the people complaining about Vita sales, Do you have a product that sells 95k a month?

10/10 would read again

Shows how poorly the 3DS is doing in the UK. But the France numbers are quite good. Those WiiU numbers are freaking terrible though.

yeah well Nintendo doesn't do worse comparatively in the UK, what are you talking about!
....despite them doing better in NA, Japan, and large parts of continental Europe of course

Yeah, I expect this to be the case. Good thing the system is region free, there are lots of exciting JP games coming out this year and next. Also some localisations of great games coming out very soon in English, such as Toukiden, Demon Gaze, and Dangan Ronpa.

Vita will be nothing more a niche product mainly catering to the Atlus/NISA/Falcom crowd in the USA. Think of it as this generation's Turbo Express.

Gran Turismo 5:

November 2010 (launch): 400K
December 2010: 560.5K

Gran Turismo 6:

December 2013 (launch): <180K

Gran Turismo 6's debut is a massive disappointment in the USA. To this day I don't understand why Sony didn't just wait for PS4. It would have been the perfect title to complement the PS4's early lineup and woo key markets.

They still have their Ace in the whole to help generate sales

I am a Nintendo fan and sales-ager and that plan fucking confused the hell out of me. How do you think the market would respond? You damn near blew my mind with '3DSU'. No chance in hell this would work.

Eh, the PS4 is pretty much sold out everywhere, and it's not like GT6 would somehow help Sony produce consoles faster.

Even if it was released on PS4 instead of the PS3, would the more powerful console address the issues people have with the game? Serious question btw, I know there's issues but aren't they more gameplay ones?

It still sounds better than most of Nintendo's ideas for the Wii U...

A mob? HA! Perhaps a small gathering maybe. I doubt so few that own the Vita boycotting Sony would do much to harm them. You and I both know it'd be far more economical to just scrap it than keep supporting it for the sake of a small handful of fans.

It's around 5 million users by now. It's a small number, but I think they would want their support. Kinda of the same problem with Wii U (but worse).

Sony admitted that they were going to at one point.

Even if they do not pull the plug, do you think they will release another handheld?

Pulling the plug on the Vita will not affect the PS4 sales. They have to be losing a shit ton of money on that thing by now.

I doubt Sony will ever release the Vita Tv now.

I don't think they'll release another dedicated handheld. A tablet/gaming hybrid? That remains to be seen.

----

Like I said, I bought one fully knowing that SCEA support would resume to localizations and indie titles. If they continue at least putting these titles on it, It'll be enough for me.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Ouch. Isn't Nintendo a strong brand in France?

Correct. Both Germany and France are Nintendo's strongest European countries.

Nintendo did extremely well in France considering. They also have 3 of the top 10 best-selling titles in 2013.

It also helps that Nintendo's management in France is top notch compared to the U.K.

All I know is my Vita projections are going to have to be revised downward. A platform selling that badly will be quietly phased out in short order. I think 2013 was Vita's last year on the American market. Shipments will be small if nonexistent until Sony announces its discontinuation on store shelves. To get to 20 million units I was hedging on America selling six to seven million units. Now I expect it to be discontinued.

So 13-14 million units WW year 5. That's if the discontinuation does not have an effect on sales in other regions. It could go lower.

I don't think Sony's going to be making handhelds much longer. That's kind of sad. I loved both PSP and Vita in theory. They just never really lived up to their potential of "Home console games on the go."

They make other games in Asia you know:

J stars Victory Vs.
Natural doctrine
Soul sacrifice delta

are all games I'm hoping to be localized.

EDIT: changed, couldn't be bothered with the argument.

If you're in Japan, your expectations have been fully realized. It is a full-fledged PSP successor and getting a metric ton of software support.

But if you're not in Japan...

Even in Japan the Vita is missing out on a lot of things the PSP had.

That shits borderline racist.

There is no way J-Stars makes it to the US.

I bought the Vita day 1, expecting it to be the PSP2.

But thats basically what you got? The PSP was a dead system in the west for years though. And the larger Western studios were already done with handhelds for years too. PSP ended up surviving its last couple years on the back of MonHun and some Japanese games that don't really mesh all that well with a mainstream Western audience.

Speculation goes from retailer pressure to recouping the loss of launching at $250 (remember how big a deal that was at the time?).

Whatever the reason, it sucks hard. I doubt it's easily changed though as standard SD cards wouldn't fit in the OG vita's memory card slot.

That would be catastrophic if it turned out to be true. My lord...

Genuine question as someone who has both a Vita and PS4 - why? What do you use it for? Why is it worth it? I can't figure that part out at all. Is it remote play?

I use it to remote play while playing PC or xbox. Basically a good second screen device to stay plugged in to PSN. PS Live, friends, PSN store. occasionally I'll play Injustice on it too.
