There's so much going on in Europe right now, I feel like we need something to relax a bit. And what better way to do that than with the biggest entertainment show on the planet: Eurovision.

I actually never cared about preseason before I found EurovisionGAF, but it's tons of fun and a good way to discover
trash
trash/ok songs/trash.

Oh yeah btw this is the winner of 2015, who else forgot this song existed?

Source for all this

I actually got the idea for this thread by some Greek friends who are pretty pissed they can't vote for the Greek participant this year. The Greek National Television named a band called Argos to represent the country and they are going to sing a "fun" song about the refugee crisis. Yay, right. BTW: Greece has always reached the final, maybe this will change in 2016.

And here are the songs of the German national final:
http://www.eurovision.de/

So, feel free to discuss and post new updates. Let's have some fun.

Wait, there's a Eurovison GAF?

As an Irish GAF member, I feel like I should have known about this.

I hope she makes it to the final:

Crimean Tatar Singer Hopes To Take People's Tragedy To Eurovision

KYIV -- The leading contender to represent Ukraine in this year's Eurovision song contest is a 32-year-old Crimean Tatar with a heart-rending song recalling how Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ordered the mass deportation of her entire nation to Central Asia in 1944.

Singer Jamala won the national quarterfinal competition with her song 1944, receiving the highest scores both from the judges and from the text-message voting -- even though the vast majority of Crimean Tatars were unable to cast ballots because they live in Crimea, which was forcibly annexed by Russia in 2014. (Ukrainian telecom companies were kicked out of the region following the Russian takeover, and now their equipment is being used there by Russian firms.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEurs8ALXMU

Background: Deportation of the Crimean Tatars

The forcible deportation of the Crimean Tatars from Crimea was ordered by Joseph Stalin as a form of collective punishment for alleged collaboration with the Nazi occupation regime in Taurida Subdistrict during 1942-1943. The state-organized removal is known as the Sürgünlik in Crimean Tatar. A total of more than 230,000 people were deported, mostly to the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. This included the entire ethnic Crimean Tatar population, at the time about a fifth of the total population of the Crimean Peninsula, as well as smaller numbers of ethnic Greeks and Bulgarians. A large number of deportees (more than 100,000 according to a 1960s survey by Crimean Tatar activists) died from starvation or disease as a direct result of deportation. It is considered to be a case of ethnic cleansing.

I'm just glad Xavier Naidoo isn't going to represent Germany. Maybe we'll actually get some points this time. :p
Seconded.

Bless for the preseason OT <3

Melodifestivalen is in full swing and this year it's actually looking really good! The first heat was a lot of fun. I'm perched for the rest of the contest, and to see if Molly Sanden can (hopefully) be stopped.

The snippets from the songs for Norway's Melodi Grand Prix are stunningly awful. Usually it's a top 3 selection contest for me but it's shockingly bad this year. Last year we actually got 1 or 2 bops but there isn't a single worthy thing about it this year, and it sucks. Maybe NRK doesn't want to host Eurovision or something, idk.

I watched Spain's contest and it was boring as hell, but the winner seems fun and Loreen was a treat.

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix is days away and that usually produces something worthwhile, even if it rarely wins.

Iceland is looking boring too this year, sadly :(

I think Latvia played last year really smartly and learned a bunch, and I hope that the rest of their contest this year is as weird and interesting. Estonia, too.

and sorry oti but Greece is on my shitlist for doing an internal selection this year and denying me some greek bops in favor of that boring trash they're sending instead

I need to catch up a bit on the selection contests but there have already been some good songs this year... hopefully the rest of the countries go hard

Eurovision is stronk

Wait, there's a Eurovison GAF?

As an Irish GAF member, I feel like I should have known about this.
EurovisionGAF is huge, and the yearly Eurovision Song Contest thread is one of the greatest things on this board in my opinion.

I saw thinking about the Eurovision today actually.

Ireland usually picks the song in February but I didn't expect Nicky Byrne was already picked.

Glad they changed the format this year. We will still do poorly but the song is decent this year.

I'm gonna order some Chinese food and watch the first heat of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2016

the finns better not disappoint... they have in the past

I'm confident the Germans will send the worst option possible in their never ending quest to stop going. The Finn....just don't give a damn I think.

Thanks to this thread I just found out that the Danish Melodi Grand Prix is happening thus Saturday! That's always fun to watch. Haven't heard anything about it yet

The opted out in shame this year. Someone will take the baton I'm sure, Greece perhaps.

Wait, you're right! There's no Portugal this year.

Well, how about a fun song about the refugee crisis from Greece then?

Apparently it's this band but with a new name. And that's obviously not the song they'll be performing.

https://youtu.be/sYDYOV-VdPc

What you have to know to understand the outcry is that Greece always treated Eurovision as this big event that deserves some of the biggest names the Greek music industry has to offer. Like Helena Paparizou or Sakis Rouvas or Anna Vissy and so on. Predetermining a band kills off a lot of hype surrounding the contest.

if you have access to Danish youtube here's a compilation of this year's songs

it's REALLY heavy on the schlager but honestly it sounds like there's some fun stuff there

DMGP had some great songs last year imo; Julie Bjerre's "Tæt på mine drømme" and Cecilie Alexandra's "Hotel A" were some of the best of all the national selection finals. I legit still bump to Hotel A, she rocked it

I literally just noticed they already have the this years songs uploaded in their entirety already. Listening to them now! I see Simone is participating again this year.

EDIT Wow, I just learnt one of my old childhood friends is participating this year. He's in the band Lighthouse X. That's pretty cool

Australia Represent!

We are never leaving. It is amazing. As a country, we have peaked. There is nowhere else for us to go.

Really hoping for Avantasia to get through for Germany, it'd be neat to see them in the final even if they'd almost certainly get nowhere with it.

Of course, the UK's choice will be terrible as always.

To me the main draw of Eurovision is the interesting performers and the insane choreography. The overall quality of the songs could be better.

Shit's gonna be great as always.

I'm really happy that Australia's back! There's so much cynicism towards the contest (especially within the Big Five) that having a super stoked contender is really fun.

I still haven't heard the Belgian entry, despite being Belgian. I want to be surprised, but I hear it is a nice number. I hope Flanders can shine for once.

It is still on my playlist. Quite a lot have survived the culling, still 18 after a year. It is my second most played of last year, after A Million Voices and before Here for You. What can I say, I like headphone girl that can't hold a tune and her supporting air violinist.

Subscribed. Eurovision is my lifeblood.

I'm a bit surprised Nicky Byrne was pushed through without a vote in Ireland. First year in quite a long time we haven't had a public vote! It's appropriately Eurovision though, so good luck to him.
