Far Cry 3 announced (Ubisoft press conference, coming 2012)

I never played the first Far Cry, but I did play the second one. Didn't really like it. A lot of its flaws really stopped me despite some cool concepts. If Far Cry 3 has a great story and tweaks all the problems from the second one, I'm in. The video really looks cool. Plus, the character talks this time around, so that's a plus.
I hate talking characters in FPS's. =P

Hopefully this guy won't be a total Chatty Cathy.

ugh. Game looks good though.
This. Seriously, who thought that was a good idea? Then again, this is from the same people who thought respawning guard posts was a good idea.

That really killed Far Cry 2 for me. I liked the game alot, but that just became really annnoying after a while. That, and the second map. Don't give me two damn huge desert maps. Ugh.

For FC2 you could turn the crosshair on and off and the original presentation didn't show much of a hud (though that could have been only for presentation purposes), but I'm hopeful their will be an option to turn all of that off.

I don't remember where it was mentioned a few weeks ago, but apparantly the game has "10x the scale of Farcry and Farcry 2", take that as you will.

It actually doesn't look that amazing at all. Looks like a console version :/
This, the scenic view of the jungle from the cliff edge looked very barren (lod o rama)

Also did I seriously just see +15 pop up when he knifed the guy in singleplayer?
SMH @ positive reinforcement spam to substitute for gameplay.

This is the playthrough that was seen behind closed doors - all of it in real time. I have to assume it was on PC, despite it being being played with a 360 gamepad.

Detection system looks to be like splinter cell conviction's, they know where the shot came from then they notice the guy with a sniper rifle a few seconds later.

The game was demonstrated on a PC (in case anyone thought otherwise..)

The PC version of Far Cry 3 will be better looking than the console counterparts, but the differences might not be as striking as gamers expect, lead game designer Jamie Keen has told VideoGamer.com.

"The PC does have a lot more grunt under the hood - or it can have grunt - so there's a lot more that we can push there," said Keen. "That doesn't mean to say, 'Let's only push PC and leave the consoles behind.' We will keep pushing to get as much out of the consoles as we possibly can.

"When we do finally unveil what the console versions looks like, I think people are are going to be surprised. Yeah, there are going to be differences, but it might not be as much as people realise."

Far Cry 3 follows the recent trend for leading with gameplay from the PC build, before showing off the less visually impressive console versions at a later date. Besides a brief glimpse of EA's Battlefield 3 on PlayStation 3, the game has been shown only running on PC.

"That's why we're making no bones about this being on PC, and everything that goes along with that," said Keen. "There are going to be areas where the consoles aren't going to be able to push things as much as the PC can.

"So, there is going to be a difference, but as much as we can minimise that gap, we're certainly working as hard as we possibly can to do that."

Keen concluded: "We're very lucky, in that we're going on the same base that Far Cry 2 had, and now our tech base is very, very strong."

Please be as big a jump in quality as asscreed to asscreed 2.
I know you can do it, ubisoft!
The EXP popup is fucking retarded tho. I like how they went for a minimal HUD for maximum immersion only to ruin it with the EXP and the weapons glowing gold even from a two-mile distance.

So I went back and played through some more of FC2 (360) yesterday. The game is still gorgeous, of course. The god rays that everyone was falling all over themselves to gif when Crysis 2 hit consoles are there in spades, and it has better AA and resolution.

I finally opened up the second map after about 20 hours of dicking around and doing side missions.

The "heat stroke" effect in the desert is neat, but happens way too fast.

Got the dart rifle and mortar. The former is really the only good stealth weapon in the game (enemies with AKs/shotguns/stationary guns will nail you if you try traditional sniper camping, even at obscene ranges), and the latter is too unweildy for my tastes (can't guess where I'm aiming = wasted ammo.

The glitch where you can't use any special weapons happened when I was on the boat escort mission, fucking lame.

I'm currently stuck in the section where you have to escape the southern city at the end of the cease fire, with only 30 rounds of useless pistol ammo and 5 grenades. *sigh*

This would easily be one of my favorite games of all time if it were better balanced and less glitchy. I love the game world, I love the weapons (though I wish there were some scoped autos, iron sights are worthless with console LOD at more than 50 ft), and I love just being able to do what the fuck I want, how I want, when I want in a fps.

Here's hoping FC 3 perfects the formula.

There is an ACOG scoped rifle. Later though :)

SSAO is fairly common on console titles.

Really? I was under the impression most of the time its baked/faked, outside of the more technically proficient titles (Uncharted 2).

It is in most big name titles, like recently Infamous 2, LA Noire, Crysis 2.

But it's been implemented in the 360 version of UE3 since 2008, so a lot of "smaller" games can use it.

It's incredibly low sample though. Quality SSAO has a hefty performance hit isn't possible on current consoles. It can even drag down a modern rig.

The game is built like that because of the limitations at the time. The "sandbox" aspect is built by each area being actually a small level, so whenever you walked outside of those "invisible walls" that rendered the level, it all resets back to 0, hence why the enemies respawn.

Its not that they thought it was a good idea, it was the only way to do it on the engine at the time.

Played Far Cry 2 today to finish up some achievements I missed in my first playthrough three years ago. That game still looks awesome.

I only hope Ubisoft pays attention to the stealth part. I felt that playing stealthy was one of the best ways to play FC2.

you're telling me it would've been impossible to save the status of a guard post as 'liberated' in the save data, thus loading an empty one when you come back?

Maybe my sarcasm meter is broken, but he blows up an entire bridge with his first shot.
Maybe you're a super relaxt guy, but from most people that would grab some attention.

That would make the game amazingly boring and much worse than the instant respawns.

Er, do you understand english? What difference does it make whether he blows up an entire bridge or takes out an individual from a distance? If anything, blowing up an entire bridge would cause more hysteria and confusion from the soldiers instead of automatically knowing where the sniper fire came from a distance.

Jesus Christ that's like stealth 101.

There are 52 of them. The game would be plenty interesting without them. Or maybe once they're unlocked, they only get respawned with a handful of guards. Something to indicate that you actually accomplished something.

Looks really nice.

If I had to guess though, looking at the lack of detail in the background areas of the demo, I'd say its PC at console settings.

you mean you hope it actually works in FC3?

Yes. It worked for the most part in FC2 once you had the stealth suit. But it needs some work to be perfect in FC3.
