New MGS4 trailer online on Konami's website

Just because a game isn't realistic doesn't mean it doesn't need to be grounded in reality. It wouldn't make sense if Snake took multiple bullets to the head and kept standing like the terminator or some shit, even tough it's an video game he is still portrayed as an human.

MGS:TT didn't raise the bar, it took the bar and shoved it up it's ass. This cutscene would be fine if this game was trying to be DMC 3, but for a MGS game it just conflicts with the game's style.

I agree - I hate stupid shit like that, especially when it followed such a great sequence with Snake. The whole scene was right up there with Dante riding a ****ing missile in DMC.

kojima and capcom should totally get together in bed and make this game

He doesn't hold any punches when it comes to excruciating detail of human behavior and function, does he? Down to the brown wet spots.

Another thing... I much prefer the previous version of Meryl. Actually, I preferred the visual style of the previous trailer overall. Is this now the final style? That'd be very disappointing.

I honestly can't understand how anyone could like the old Meryl over the new one.

Hello, first time neogaf poster here, thought I'd add a few things I noticed and posted at my usual forum:

Clipping:

Floating:
vamp-lulz.gif

A fellow forum-goer also pointed out that one of the soldiers pisses themselves, but I dunno if it's been posted yet or not, or if it even came from here.

You need to get peed on. That knife wasn't floating, he tossed it upwards.

MERYL HAS BLOCKY HAIR.

FLOATING WEAPONS!

TOTALLY UNREALISTIC, AND RIDICULOUS!

That has got to be the most retarded thing i've ever heard. Its clearly raiden his voice, hairstyle and face. Its just as dumb as the masked guy being young snake or big boss in mgs3 being solid snake traveling back in time theory.

Wow, did I hit a nerve or something ?

Anyway.
I'm glad you can recognize Raiden's voice. Personnaly I can't. It's all distorded. The masked guy sounds like Raiden. That's pretty sure it's his voice. But the ninja ? I really don't know.

The hairstyle... well, Raiden has straight, a bit blonde hairs, the ninja has messy, completely white hairs.

The face...
I agree you can think the ninja looks a bit like raiden. Yes, Raiden is a bit feminine. But THAT much ? The shape of the face, the eyelashes... And what's up with the heels and the nails ? People whined Raiden was too girly, and i'm sure Kojima wants to play with that, but common.

Another thing about the face and the hair. If people think the masked guy and the ninja are the same person, something is wrong. First, the length of the hair doesn't match. The masked guy's hair are a bit longer, just like Raiden's.
Then, check the shape of the noses of both characters. Not the same. The masked guy has the same nose than Raiden. The Ninja ? not really.

So yeah, I don't know, but I'm really not sure the ninja we're seeing is Raiden. At least the one in the E32k7 trailer.

The game received some downgrade here and there, I wonder why. Something must be wrong with the color palette, I don´t have a problem with a "washed out" look, but this game is so colorless that it hurts. TGS05 had the best overall color scheme imo.

It's the MGS style which the original TGS demo really didn't have (other than the battlefield sequences). It wouldn't really be MGS with out heavy color filters.

Well, I agree about the voices. The Masked dude sounds like the old Raiden, the Ninja doesn't sound like Raiden at all.

I just want to see the actual game. MGS cut scenes were cool when I was a high school freshman (so old) but either I've gotten more discerning or they've gotten stupider. How can anyone get excited by Vamp having an anime fight with Raiden? I mean really, people.

MGS3 reaffirmed that Hideo Kojima is a game design genius, but a Uwe Boll level storyteller. Just show some next-gen tactical espionage action, already.

Because it's visually interesting. It is called a set piece. They're fun because you see crazy things that you've never seen before, as they often involve highly kinetic action and an incredible amount of creativity. It's like porn for fans of athleticism. Live action, 3d, 2d, or otherwise.

There isn't a rolleye smiley on the internet big enough for that comment.

I could break out into a dissertation on the MGS cosmology but I would be typing for hours, needless to say, regardless of the subjective nature of judging a game's story, in terms of story-telling ability there are some objective ways to measure skill and putting Kojima in the same class as Uwe is just retarded.

As far as gameplay, next week in Japan the game will be played by Kojima to the press.

Yes but it's a game we're talking about, not a cartoon. I want to see what the next-generation of MGS gameplay is, not the next generation of cheesy anime kung-fu. Do we know anything about the friggen game yet? I remember a camo suit and rolling in barrels. Anything new? Or should I just hunker down and prepare for another 10,000 word treatise on nuclear war or the environment or what it means to be a soldier?

I'm willing to bet that it plays like a Metal Gear game. Just a hunch. I'm sure there'll be new moves and shit but I expect the gameplay to be reminiscent of the past 3 titles.

My mistake then. Thread was like 12 pages long so I thought there has to be some pretty good info, and instead I find people talking about Solid Snake's mustache and Meryl's face.

Vamp is a ladies man, and a manly lady, or something, whatever... he has to keep his groove on to satisfy both sexes.

You must not be that big on the series to begin with. We like this shit. :lol

But nah, I'm sure some good info will come next week when Kojima is supposed to demo the game in Tokyo.

Sounds like you don't like Metal Gear, feel free to move on to your next title of interest.

Not to get off topic or anything, but when I looked at the Dante vs. Vamp image a few posts up, does anyone else think that Kevin Sorbo would make an awesome Dante for the film?

The thing I don't really agree with in your theory is that Raiden is in no way a rookie now. By the end of MGS2 he was at least equal if not greater than Snake in terms of skill. He was trained since childhood by Solidus Snake himself, and become one of the world's greatest soldiers after the events of the Big Shell. Hell, he took on 25 Metal Gears, something not even Snake can claim to have done.

Raiden in his prime is definitely more skilled than Snake was in his.

WHAT!?!? Leave this thread!

But seriously, theres no way, dude. I'll give you EQUAL at most, and even then Snake surpassed him. Raiden is in no way greater than Snake, though. He may have taken on 25 Metal Gear Rays, but he couldn't take on actual people. If you remember, he was quite bad at it, at least in terms of the psychological effects. Raiden was being controlled, and his mind was pretty damn weak. Raiden also basically had to be told that he was being controlled. Snake tends to figure it out, but he continues his mission like a true soldier. His mind is also stronger, and psychological warfare is something he is prepared to defend against. Honestly, try to make sense of this string of words cause between talking to people on AIM and watching videos, I...sorta lost my train of thought. :lol

Either way, Snake > Raiden. :lol

Snake's also better with women. Raiden, not so much. For instance:

Rose: "Do you know what today is?"

Raiden: "Uh..."

Granted, if I were on a mission where I had to talk aloud with my enemies around, my anniversary would be the last thing on my mind.

Well, it has been confirmed that it's Raiden, what do you expect? Nothing points to the changes being more than, well, design changes. The masked guy could or could not be Raiden, so far however, besides a little Hair, there's not much of a connection between him and Ninja-Raiden. Of course you could suppose anything to make a theory work, but eh. Mostly baseless speculation if you ask me.

And considering that only his spine and head are organic, there's not much, if anything of his original throat left, so naturally his voice would sound differently. (Grey Fox had an awful wheeze in his voice too. Don't you think they're not supposed to be recognized when they talk?)

Hell, it's fun to look at, that's all. Are we going to dispute our favourite colours next? I don't understand how someone could love pink that much either. I like the aesthetics of the movements and the choreography of it. I don't know why, I just do. (Over the top or not, I don't care.) I wouldn't want it to be like Splinter Cell.

After watching the trailer again, I'm led to believe that the masked ninja is, in fact, Raiden. If you watch him rush to the aid of his fellow squad mates, you can hear him say, "Johnathan," and he sounds exactly like him.

Edit: So, here's my theory:

After Liquid Ocelot flies away to God knows where in his chopper, Raiden is the only solider left in that area who hasn't lost control of his emotions and the GEKKOS turn their attention towards him. There'll probably be a cool chase sequence where he nearly escapes (like destroying two of the bi-pedal terrors with a well placed C-4 trap or something). When he's running toward a seemingly safe structure, his hopes of reaching it are quickly shattered after he gets kicked by a stealthy GEKKO that just appears out of nowhere. After the wind is knocked out of him, he attempts to get up, but he's just completely surrounded, each of them getting in a devastating stomp one after another until there's barely anything left of him.

Eventually, he undergoes an operation that makes his physical composition more machine than man, allowing him to be the ultimate combatant. To test his new abilities, he goes back to the Middle East and makes quick work of the monsters that made him what he is, only to find another nuisance he knows all too well...

I dunno. I mean at least we know Raiden actually has sex with Rose, while Snake is impotent the majority of women he meets try to kill him at least once.

Seriously? Obviously they added some distortion effect to his voice but to me it was very clearly Raiden's voice.

So. Flying (or hovering), walking on water, being a natural bullet repellent etc. is O.K., but over the top movements are not. Right.
If it makes you feel better I thought Fortune stopping bullets was one of the most idiotic moments in the entire series.

You're right. Sounds an awful lot like him.

Fixed.
But yeah, the gist of it is Raiden gets mutilated on the battlefield and comes back as the Ninja we see. How does Shinkawa's remark about his body 'falling apart' fit in there though.

Sigh. Anything is possible with this series.

Absolutely not.

Those were all pretty lame scenes in the series. Especially Fortune stopping the bullets.

My least favorite parts about any MGS game are characters like Psycho Mantis, The Sorrow, The Fear, The Pain, Liquid's arm attached to Ocelot, etc.

Ocelot and Liquid are by far the best villains of the series.

Though Liquid should have stayed dead...his arm being attached to Ocelot is just dumb.

SPOILERS from MGS2!

Kojima said the various abilities from Vamp would be explained in MGS4. Plus Fortune didn't stop bullets, Ocelot himself said "there is no such things as miracles, only pure high tech gear". It was an electro-magnetic system that blocked high-speed projectiles. As for how the missiles from the Ray were diverted it is unclear, for NOW. The Patriots could NOT allow Ocelot to kill everyone, he was a pawn that was about to **** up the S3 plan (he did not know the true motives behind the S3, remember). So when he shot the missiles the Patriots probably activated Fortune's device. Ocelot realized this and decided to instead use the Ray's water beam, which could NOT be stopped by the device, but before doing so Liquid takes over (maybe The Patriots were triggering this as well, it is still very likely considering MGS4' digitized sense theme that Liquid is nothing but a digitized meme of Liquid which has now taken over him through Liquid's nanomachines located in his arm).

So relax, wait for MGS4.

Plus remember this isn't Splinter Cell, it's more like an anime.

Yeah, I agree with that theory about Liquid. It fits in with the whole theme of MGS4 in general.

I'd compare the suspension of disbelief in MGS to be similar to a Michael Crichton novel, myself. Pseudo-science.

I doubt they will ever give an acceptable explanation for Vamp, though, except for self-repairing nanomachines or something.
