As any customer of Nintendo's various DD services can tell you, they certainly aren't lacking in great software. Unfortunately, what they do lack is a great interface to show off that software. That's where GAF comes in!

Included below is a list of recommendation and review threads to give you a few ideas about where to spend your Nintendo Points - and where not to!

Channels.gif

Nintendo will occasionally make new Channels available through the Wii Shop, or update the system firmware of the Wii and DSi with new features. Any new Channels or updates will be listed here.

A quick request for US GAFers - is my list of US demos up to date, or have some been removed?

Sorry, don't have an answer for you, but thanks for the hard work on the thread! It would be awesome if you could add a DS demo section too. I wish Nintendo wasn't retarded and could leave demos up indefinitely like every other service in existence, but in the mean time it would be nice to know when new DS demos go up as well.

I can try to maintain a DS demo section, but it would probably require some assistance from a US GAFer or two. I can check European DS demos once a week on my Wii, but I'd need someone to do the same for US demos.

Any volunteers? :)

Racers' Islands: Crazy Racers (Demo Version)

Why do they make demos for such shitty games?
Shitty, what gives you that idea? (
seriously, NintenDaan did say it was the worst racing game on the service which is pretty scary considering SPOGS Racing and the Family Fun Kart are on there
) Well, it wouldn't be such a problem if NoE didn't have that stupid 10 demos at a time rule.

I only get to connect my Wii to the internet once in a blue moon so when I got the chance over a month ago, I completely about Chronos Twins and Thuspace (and so didn't buy them). I certainly wouldn't have had their demos still been up.

So are we ever getting Yoshi's Island on VC? :(

I guess the SNES emulator has some kind of trouble with the FX chip? We haven't seen Starfox, Stunt Race FX or Uniracers, among others.

Uniracers/rally won't happen. For a non-technical reason, its just that the Unicycle is very similar to the one in Red's Dream and yes, Pixar did sue back in the day, Nintendo lost (and computer generated red unicycles cannot be made anymore), game was discontinued but 300,000 copies sold.

Back to Super FX. Depends on how accurately they are emulating it. If the emulation is more on par with BSNES (extremely accurate even to the point of emulating features not used in any games) where the special chips took ages to be emulated I could understand there being problems but otherwise.

That said in the history of PC based SNES emulation. While I don't know the super-early stuff I seem to recall Super FX was up and running before transparency and sound were properly worked out (but I don't know if the Super FX was properly emulated or not). Though this could have been due to not having the technical documents.

In a sense Nintendo seem to like to avoiding chips for SNES and NES mappers until they have no other choice. Unrelated but given PC based N64 emulation is only accurate because the emulator knows what game its playing and so changes settings as a result (most emulators are like this, actually even Nintendo's own in a sense
its easier to maintain compatibility if you have one emulator, one game
) that could be why we see so little of those games.

Some have the theory Nintendo won't do it because Super FX polygons with a low framerate is just terrible.

Edit: I think early SNES emulated Super FX was running at twice the speed. Would that be 30 FPS instead of 15?

It's currently correct. No other demos have been removed yet, although I suspect we may lose a few tomorrow.

Yup, roger that.

I just remembered that the U.S. hasn't gotten any of the Hudson releases in December or November yet. We're behind EU by four games now: Super E.D.F., Rival Turf!, Super Bonk, and Faxanadu.

Cheers - and yes, the demo section seems to hover at around 12-13 at any one time in Europe at least, so there does seem to be some sort of policy to keep demos at a certain level.

What? That's the actual title? Are they being ironic or not?

What do you mean?

I don't believe this - I thought people would be delighted to have SCAT on the VC. I know there are plenty of people out there who are going to be thrilled to have it there and will be desperate to start playing with SCAT as soon as possible.

I'm guessing the next wave of VC classics (Contra, Yoshi's Island, Starfox, Final Fantasy III [VI], Chrono Trigger, etc.) will start once 3DS is released and its VC service is up and running. Got to have it start out with a bang, and these obvious missing classics should do just that.

I’m still waiting on Faxanadu, the Lufia games and Soul Blazer trilogy. The Soul Blazer games have not been ESRB’d (at least as far as I know), but Faxanadu has already been released in Japan (and I believe EU) and there was an article I saw a little while back that said we may see the Lufia games on the VC.

Is it confirmed that the 3DS virtual console will have SNES games, or even NES?

Scraping the bottom of that VC barrel, I see.

Not really. S.C.A.T., though not well known, is a minor classic among shooters on the NES. It was featured in Nintendo Power back in the day. Natsume's action games are pretty much always lots of fun, and usually have great 8-bit music too.

Although, the Natsume NES action game I'd really like to see is Shatterhand.

S.C.A.T. is awesome, feels like a classic Konami game with 2 player coop mode. It's one of the best NES VC games so far IMO.

It's interesting to see that gymnastics game on DSiWare, as it had a $20 retail release just a few months ago. I wonder if it's the complete game?

I wanted to see what this S.C.A.T. game looked like, so I did an image search for "scat natsume". Please, for the love of all that is good in the world, don't do what I did.

I believe that it has been stated by Nintendo before that the reason Yoshi's Island hasn't been released and won't be released on the virtual console is due to emulation issues with the Super FX chip that the game uses, which is the main reason the game doesn't work on after-market emulation devices and such. I dunno, I could be wrong, but I'm for some reason sure it's not coming to the VC due to emulation issues.

I thought YI was one of the SNES games shown running on the 3DS last E3. Does anyone have the actual list of retro games for 3DS from E3?

There doesn't appear to be one up for this week yet. I'm so bitterly disappointed I could write in my notebook about it while watching the fireplace simulator.

I love how they release this so quietly. Could you imagine the hype if they announced Smash 64 or Mario Party 2 with (good) online functionality? I'd pay any amount of dollars for that.
SEGA* does what Nintendon't.

*- Or most likely, in this case M2. Curious they've just done done Neo-Geo emulation for PS3 and PSP (with online so I guess not that they've made netcode its no effort) yet they don't do that system on Wii. I guess its a case of clients and that (who did D3 publisher do it with or was it internal?)

I only just noticed. Europe doesn't have Snowpack Park yet. Remember, that Skip developed game.

Europe update:
This week on Nintendo DSiWare, there is a host of games to test your motor skills and challenge your brain. The colourful, high-octane action of Shantae: Risky's RevengeTM will see you guiding a “half-genie” through outlandish and enchanting environments in your quest to save Sequin Land.

101 Dolphin Pets allows you to adopt and care for your own virtual pet dolphin, while Model Academy will enable you to advance from being the girl next door to a popular top model. And last but certainly not least this Friday on Nintendo DSiWare this week, Hip Hop King: Rytmik Edition gives you the chance to unleash your inner musician, enabling melodic themes as well as whole songs to be composed.

Prepare to be attacked by vicious viruses in Viral Survival and snuggle in front of a warming log fire with Cosy Fire – both on WiiWare this week. Enjoy the amazing 3D graphics, grueling boss fights and fierce action of Rage of the Gladiator, for which a WiiWare Demo* is available now.

Nintendo DSiWare – Shantae: Risky's RevengeTM (WayForward, 1,200 Nintendo DSi Points)
This is it - the sequel to the critically acclaimed Shantae. Fans asked and WayForward answered with a powder keg of high octane, hair-whipping, hip shaking action available only on Nintendo DSiWare.

Shantae sets the bar even higher with thousands of frames of animation, huge multi-sprite bosses and a quest so big it’s bursting at the seams. Guide “half-genie” Shantae through haunted wastes, burning deserts, enchanted forests, dripping caverns and deadly labyrinths. Discover magical attacks, brew zombie coffee, save golden babies and master the art of belly-dancing to transform Shantae into more powerful creatures.

Use your powers to foil the lady pirate Risky Boots and save Sequin Land from certain doom. With its infectious characters, flirtatious humor and deliciously outlandish action, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge offers up all the hair- whipping, belly-dancing action you can handle.

Nintendo DSiWare – 101 Dolphin Pets (Teyon, 500 Nintendo DSi Points)
Choose from over 101 baby dolphins or simply adopt them all! Discover their personalities as you feed, clean and care for your new pets. Bring out your pet's talents by training your dolphin in a variety of fun and wacky activities.

Enter your dolphin into pet shows and earn money to buy exciting upgrades including toys, food, clothes, accessories and more. The more tricks you teach and the more games you play, the more fun you'll have. You'll never be bored with so many new best friends to pamper, play with and love.

Nintendo DSiWare – Model Academy (Tivola, 500 Nintendo DSi Points)
You play to advance from being the girl next door to a popular top model. Your agent Nick will keep presenting you with new challenges, which you have to overcome. You'll be travelling around the world, getting to know many influential people.

You don't just have to prove your taste in choosing your outfits, but also your skill on the catwalk and your speed during photoshoots. Regular fitness training and beauty treatments will let you shine when facing your clients.

Nintendo DSiWare – Hip Hop King: Rytmik Edition** (Cinemax, 800 Nintendo DSi Points)

Now’s your chance to turn your musical dreams into reality. Hip Hop King - Rytmik Edition gives you the tools to create melodies and rhythms and to compose whole songs.

There are more than 170 carefully selected sound samples of drums, other percussion instruments, bass, melodic instruments and gramophone scratches. These enable you to quickly and easily create the basic building block for the game, an audio clip, onto which you can build other sounds and create musical masterpieces.

You’ll have the choice of four instruments and can adjust their volume, reverse and shuffle the sounds and play with effects such as echo. If you are struggling for inspiration there is a collection of 11 pre-made compositions which you can use to help compose your own pieces.

WiiWare Demo – Rage of the Gladiator (Ghostfire Games)

WiiWare – Viral Survival (NIS America, 500 Wii Points)
Viral Survival is an "escape" action game where you control a special DNA unit and dodge through enemy virus attacks. If you save a friendly DNA unit they will connect to you, creating a tail. The more you save, the higher point total you will accumulate.

There are also four other game modes, including one where you can shoot the enemy down and compete for number of kills and a time attack mode to save 128 DNA units in the shortest time possible. For all five game modes your score can be ranked online. Try your best to become number one in the world!

WiiWare – Cosy Fire (dtp entertainment, 500 Wii Points)
We all long for a cosy open fire, particularly during the cold season, but not everyone is able to snuggle in front of a warming blaze. Your new WiiWare open fire will fill every room with a magical and cosy atmosphere.

Select from a variety of logs and use the Wii Remote to stack them up. Now, light the match and your home will soon be snug and glowing. There are six fireplaces available: fire alone, campfire and rustic, classic, elegant and Zen fireplaces.

Poke and tend the fire to keep it burning. Place more logs on the fire to keep the fire burning, just like a real fire. Would you like to just sit back and relax? No problem: new logs will be placed on the fire in Butler mode and the logs never burn down in Non-stop mode!

What could be nicer than the comforting crackle and animation of a real fire during the coldest time of the year?

Japan doesn't even have those Penta Tentacles and light trax, the two Art Style games.
