Neither fully a comedy nor a drama, Transparent is simply transcendent. [19/26 Sep 2014, p.123]

The Hollywood Reporter said:
All told, Transparent is a surprisingly poignant, funny and mature piece of work.

The step up in class is crystal clear, and indicative of another kind of change, one that’s transforming the media landscape. For those hungry for quality shows without regard to source or delivery mechanism, that’s even better news than free shipping.

I didn't watch the pilot when it first came out so I'm really looking forward to finally seeing what all the fuss is about.

I can't wait, this looks fantastic. Glad they're going Netflix with the release method, I do love when I just blast through a show in a weekend.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Just watched the pilot with the wife and it was fantastic. Can't wait for all the episodes.

Also the pilot on Amazon had Melora already as Tammy, was there a different pilot?

Genius is at work on every level here, but never so powerfully as in the casting of Tambor as Maura. The man was born with the face of a sad clown. Even when he smiles, his mouth seems upside down. Just as great clowns like Bert Lahr and Robin Williams were perfect for the tragicomic tramp Estragon in “Waiting for Godot,” no other actor could bring what Tambor brings to Maura.

They must have already put the new pilot up.

After Sepinwall is talking this show up, I'm definitely looking forward to it. Together with Th Affair my most anticipated new shows for the rest of the year. Really interested how it will be tonally.

- Maureen Ryan's review: 'Transparent' On Amazon Is Terrific And Belongs In TV's Top Tier
"Transparent," which arrives Friday on Amazon Prime, is not just the best new show of the fall, it's one of the best new shows of the year.

Within the first few episodes, "Transparent" gracefully launches itself into television's top tier, and though Amazon has been dabbling in this realm for some time, it has finally found the program that will put its scripted offerings on the map.

What a lovely heart this show has, and what supple skills "Transparent" uses to explore the questions of identity and connection rolling around inside that wounded, hopeful heart. This is simply a great show.

This is all up now. Enjoy the show.

Regarding spoilers, since it's only 5 hrs in total, I don't see too much of a reason to spoiler tag things. It's probably a good idea to label which episode you're discussing if there's something specific you'd like to talk about.

Sweet, it's up! Psyched to check it out. I'll ask for a content advisory if anyone's seen it yet, curious how R-rated it is vs. SFU.

Viewership be damned, I would be extremely surprised if Amazon didn't renew this show asap. Overwhelming critical acclaim like this doesn't come around every day.

Blasted through all five hours, that was fantastic. Excellent acting (especially from Tambor), well developed characters, humorous and emotional at the right times, a wonderful exploration of gender and identity. Amazon is officially on the map with this.

this show is wonderful. the exploration of trans issues and tambor's delicate performance are going to be rightly lauded, but the rest of the family drama reminds me of a modern hannah and her sisters is an entertaining way. some gorgeous bits of direction too.

episode three spoilers -
"i'm so sorry about the armenian genocide" #dead
episode four -
"exclamation points, which are in and of themselves small rapes" - loool

So is this show typical left wing Hollywood Lecturing us about transsexuals or is it actually good drama?

it's a good drama. trans people actually exist and face challenges and this dramatizes this fact, while also exploring what it means to transition very late in your life and the sadness of only fully embracing it then and the value of family as you get older. i don't think it's particularly sopaboxy or smug and self-congratulatory about the material, if anything it's just a bit melancholy with some humour and it's deeply rooted in character rather than politics. there's also a lot to the show that's just about the children's lives as confused young adults/adults, made even more confused by their father changing so surprisingly, which ties into the themes of the show but rounds it out too.

Just watched the pilot, thinking of using my 30 prime trial to watch this. Big SFU fan here so I hope this show might help fix that itch.

Watched the second episode -- this show is just fantastic. I got the 30 day free Prime trial for this, so I'm really excited to see more.

It's a great show, and I don't really understand what your post means -- what is there to "lecture" about? Transgender people exist.

My boyfriend and I sat down to watch the first episode last night and ended up watching the first 5. It really is great.

It's so great to see this as a show for so many reasons. Normally when it comes to shows about social topics that mainstream media tends to stray away from, it takes a long time for them to really dig down and get to the tougher topics. To not only see a show about a trans person, but a trans person who is elderly, who is still transitioning, and who doesn't pass. It's just really amazing to see this so early in the period of trans people gaining visibility in the media.

I saw this on Prime yesterday. After seeing Tambor as the lead and considering George Sr's recent story, I wondered "Is this a spiritual sequel to Arrested Development Season 4?"

I'll certainly be looking into watching it.
