Please tell me this isn't real.

Ya'all a bit too touchy imho. That was such an 'obvious' joke.

Anywho OT: Visuals are meh tbh but hopefully we will see a sizable gameplay segment at E3
I'm disappointed by the visuals as well but I'm waiting to formulate a concrete opinion till I see more. Also Shit jokes are just shit jokes. We all make em. No biggie

I swear if this had the Obsidian name slapped on it then it would suddenly become the best thing since sliced bread.

Some of the shit going on in this thread amazes me.

The game looks fantastic.

Yeah, I am confused by his tweet as well.
FO and ES gameplay is all about the janky 1st person lifting object to steal stuff simulator and a little bit of point/click and aim shooting/swinging weapon.
Yea exactly. It's charming and not necessarily terrible but the reason I play fallout and elder scrolls is for atmosphere and story. Mostly atmosphere.

I've always been gameplay >>>>>>>>>>>> graphics, but even I'm a little surprised by the graphics in that trailer. Maybe it's just because i'm 60 hours into the PC version of Witcher 3. Regardless, I'm still super excited for the game.

I'm really excited for Fallout 4 after seeing those landmarks in the trailer. I'm really glad that they are going to do Boston for Fallout 4 because I went there several times for vacation and I'm going to have a field day to take a look at some landmarks and thinking about the difference between our Boston and Fallout's Boston.

Yeah, I have a huge thing for alternative universe plots based on what if and what would happens if things went differently. Fallout is prefect franchise to fill my needs for those kind of things. Do anyone know other franchises/games that might have alternative universe plots that I might enjoy as well? Well, I would like to have alternative universe based on our world history.

Anyway, I can't emphasize how much that I'm totally excited that we are getting Boston for Fallout 4 because it's really enriched with a lot of histories there. For good example, Scollay Square, I'm totally stroked that we are going to see it in the game. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to enjoy this game much as I did with Fallout 3.

MIT is more likely to be in the game as The Institute, so I'm curious to see if they are going to add other historical landmarks, like Quincy Market, Boston Public Library, Trinity Church, Symphony Hall, Old State House, Old City Hall, Boston Light, Boston Naval Shipyard, etc.

my post from other thread but I never got any answer so hopefully I would get someone's answers here!

There was a fake interview quoted in that post that didnt show in my quote. i almost lost my shit because i can actually believe Todd Howard saying something like that. Thankfully it was fake though.

Googling that showed me why I always thought /v/ was the worst board. Bunch of people posting that and all the anons sat there and took it wholesale.

I've been craving Nuka-Cola for the past four years. Finally, I have something to spend my bottle caps on without having drinker's remorse. Joking aside, my hype meter for E3 just went through the roof. Honestly, the graphics look fine. I'm more interested in the gameplay.

You do realize there are performance tradeoffs right? Look up draw calls in relation to performance.

A Bethesda game has a massive amount of draw calls because almost every object is dynamic (meaning it is not baked into the environment thus saving draw calls).

Every single mesh that can be moved is a draw call and if they don't use texture atlasing then you can say that every single mesh is 2 draw calls (mesh and material). But wait then you have to add shadows which, depending on the method can add at least 1 more draw call.

So lets say they use texture atlasing for all the small objects. That still means that there are at least 2 draw calls per movable object. Remember that just about everything in the game can be moved (everything that isn't is likely batched into one big mesh to save on draw calls when possible).

Walk into a house in FO:NV and you might find 50 objects you can mess with. Thats at bare minimum 100 but more than likely closer to 200 draw calls, then you have to take into account the draw calls the house itself and all the non movable objects that are not batched. The UI itself is probable 3 or more draw calls.

Beyond that you also have the character and weapon (likely 10 draw calls) and any enemies which would be 4-10 draw calls each. Add into that the draw calls from outside the house which depending on LOD distance can balloon out into 2000+ easy if there is grass and trees.

Culling can help with some of the draw calls but it has its own performance cost.

Now with all of this we still haven't gotten to post processing, Textures sizes, AI, scripting, physics (Beth games have dynamic physics which eats the CPU like nothing), and the lighting engine.

Are there multiple lights in the house casting multiple shadows? Whelp if there are then you can go ahead and double your shadow draw calls.

Do you not see how a Beth style game balloons out into a performance nightmare?

How do other games look so good (Witcher 3)?

Well they use a hell of a lot of static assets that can be batched (combined in both mesh and texture) to vastly limit draw calls which allows them to have better "graphics". Ever notice how almost all loot in the witcher games is found in chests? Well, that is another way to limit draw calls, keeping dynamic objects off the map (lower draw calls, lower physics budget, ect).

People need to educate themselves on how games are made before they start frothing at the mouth over OMG bad graphics. Not every game has the same base, or even the same goals.
It's sad that so many people are ignoring this post because they'd rather just complain about the graphics.

I'm in total disbelief right now. Rushed home from work eagerly expecting to watch the new Fallout trailer with a drink on my hand.

I can't believe what I'm witnessing. God awful graphics and animations. I waited years for this!? The dog makes me want to puke. Look at those textures! Even the COD dog looks better. I'm no graphics whore but you can't tell me gaming is just gameplay. It is a combo of visuals and mechanics to create something. Looks like it missed one of those marks.

i waited until i got home to see the trailer proper to really judge

.... i dunno, i still think it looks pretty good. sort of reminds me of Bioshock Infinite with everything set on ultra, and then some, which is pretty good for open world.

the only thing i'm disappointed with are the character models. for some reason i expected bethesda to up their game with the motions and textures in this regard. this is really the only thing i'd pout in a corner about.

anyway my guess is bethesda really wanted to hunker down on performance this time around. i think they knew this was the reaction they'd get, but they'd prefer a lukewarm trailer reception to having an unplayable mess at launch. if this is the case, kudos to them for making strides towards shedding their bad rep in this regard.

Poor dog, what did it ever do to you?

Seems to be a lot of people in this thread picking on the dog. You're a horrible person.

This is the craziest thing ive read in this thread.

Why? I feel the same way actually. I love fallout because its the Mad Max game I've always wanted. The combat sucks and the quest suck aswell. The world is fun to explore though and combat sucks but blowing up somebodys head in slowmo never gets old.

I mean, I was never expecting anything except better than Fallout 3 graphics, so this is a win

I love the use of color.

Nah, Fallout was never impressive in terms of graphics

Fallout 3 2008:

Gears of War 2 2008:

GTA IV 2008 (a game with way more NPC's, Vehicles and elements on screen):

That's not Fallout 3 on consoles... which ran at 720P, that's higher than 720...

Lol "shit"
Im not a huge fan of how it looks, but "shit" is fucking ridiculous.

Honestly the most interesting part of the trailer were the parts that looked the least like Fallout 3. Glad to finally see some diversity in environments, will be really fun to walk around in.

The only game where the mechanics were half baked was Fallout 3. New Vegas fixes nearly every issue with Bethesdas effort.

The game looks fantastic.

Probably because that means it would most likely be in tune with the original Fallout spirit like NV was. And that it would have good writing etc.

I'll call it unimpressive.

But yeah, that's something that can be fixed with mods. Let's don't forget that this is a Bethesda game. Even Skyrim still looks better than most games nowadays with mods.

But this post is not correct.
There is something like instancing. And draw calls counts mostly to visible objects.
3k draw calls is not a problem for any CPU.
I've done some draw call tests almost two years in CryEngine. Draw calls are under DP.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrSpm2AZWVU

Not all engines instance, and I think the point he was getting at was more drawcalls are harder than less draw calls. Which was just one example of how making games with a finite power (consoles) is about give and take, compromises in some areas for the sake of other things. Which makes it super difficult to directly compare titles.

It's sad that so many people are ignoring this post because they'd rather just complain about the graphics.

There is such thing as being intelligent with what is interactable though. Most people wouldn't bat an eyelid if you couldn't pick up a vase or some shit. If they limited it to a few flavour items with some key items I don't think many would complain.

Or to rephrase it - GTA 5 had a shitload of un-interactive objects, yet it worked as an open world game to the extent that many would laud it as GOTG for its time. Honestly if its a choice between a useless vase and visual prowess most would choose the latter I think, the game doesn't suddenly become fucking amazing because I can tip a jar or some shit. It might be intense on the CPU but its pointlessly intense.

A little selectivity would go a long way I feel.

NV looks like shit too but at least it's story, the gameworld and most of the characters motivations made sense. Fallout 3 was an incoherent mess.

Never forget:

I'd give up a lot of movable objects for a little more processing done elsewhere

Bethesda just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about post-apocalyptic graphics (I'm an expert), but polycount and textures are huge parts of it.

What this means is that the American public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Fallout 4 for any system, nor will they purchase any of Bethesda's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Bethesda has alienated an entire market with this move.

Bethesda, publicly apologize and announce that this was just Fallout 4 for Vita or you can kiss your business goodbye.

do you guys think we'll see more at E3?

i really hope so because the trailer only filled the glass half way

Of course. They have their own press conference this year...

They will walk us through a lengthy gameplay demo and show off the new features. (Probably Todd himself)

Then they will likely announce the release date which could very well be this year.
