Stranger Things |OT| Hey, you guys...it's our time. It's our time in here July 15th

Yeah I stopped watching after the second episode. I feel that the music while great doesn't fit the mood at all, it sounds like it was made for something like tron. I wasn't feeling any of the characters, none of them felt believable. It's hard to put a finger on why exactly I feel that way. It's just subtle things in the dialogue and acting that just didn't gel for me. And like you said, the pandering to 80's nostalgia was laid very thick, and I love 80's stuff.

Got to disagree with this- the music worked wonderfully for the show and really helped me get into the atmosphere it was creating. I hold no nostalgia for the 80s as I was born after but I still think it worked well in creating that feel of the 80's that old shows/movies used to do without feeling too overbearing.

1)
2) it actually makes sense given that
Barb had to be left behind in the Upside Down, and she is basically (for everybody besides our group) a missing person.

[spoilers]Yeah... Not really sure how they could explain that one, more so with no body. "Sorry, but your daughter was dragged into an alternate shadow dimension where she was promptly killed and forced feeded slugs by a monster that was most likely using her to create more of itself."

At that point it's probably just better to let them believe their daughter ran away.[/spoiler]

Question about the finale.

If I understood correctly, it seemed like Hop betrayed Eleven at first. But then, he's seen bringing her eggos. So presumably, his "betraying' her was just a setup?

If you loved your 80's you wouldn't be stating the music doesn't fit. Its like a glove that fits just right and is also another homage to the 80's synth scores of classic films like those by Carpenter. It totally fits the mood and the influences.

I understand what they were going for, but it didn't work for me. I'm a big fan of John Carpenter and his music, but the show seems to be aping Spielberg more than anything and those two styles don't really complement each other. If the show wasn't mainly focused on kids perhaps I wouldn't feel like the music was so jarring.

I think you should watch more, the tone gets darker as it goes on the soundtrack works better and better.

Yeah, it's implied or stated that Hop told them where Eleven was so that they could go save Will in the Upside-down. However, things didn't turn out as the organization planned and they were all killed. So Hop was brought into explain (hence him getting into the car before the time skip)- and you could almost take that they weren't exactly angry (hence Hop living), and possibly telling them that Eleven is still alive- somehow in the Upside down or beyond.

I maybe wrong however... Sometimes I mess up the little details and such.

What I'm curious about is whether or not the people that brought Hop in where actually the same group that worked in the Energy Facility or maybe an oversight group that realized the program had gotten out of hand.

Edit: Elandyll explains it better.

Yes and no.

If you pay attention, you will notice that Hopps sent the MiBs to the wrong building, hoping it would give the kids and 11 a chance to escape.
At the end he is either hoping she is only in the UD or could come back, or he knows she is around.
Other possibility, less hopefull: this is a memorial box, like those flowers you see on the side of the road sometimes.

Its inspired by Spielberg as much as Carpenter as much as King as much a ton of other influences from the Goonies to the Monster Squad.

Thank you both. I think it would be a weird narrative fake-out if it were a
memorial box,
though. So that leads me to believe
he knows she's around, or possibly in the UD
as you said.

I totally missed that about the
wrong building. So I suppose he didn't betray her as much in that case. Though I think it was a bit unfortunate he didn't send them somewhere wildly wrong. It seems a little bit of a betrayal still if she wasn't in on it and he only sent them next door. Unless I misunderstood what you meant by wrong building, I thought you meant like the school building next door.

Thanks very much to you both for the clarification!

I assume it's already been discussed that S2 is a done deal per Modine?

While Netflix has yet to make an official announcement to "Stranger Things" Season 2, Matthew Modine divulged that it is happening. Modine spoke to Premiere, a French entertainment site, and categorically but unofficially said, "There will be a season two," per Digital Trends. Watch the actual interview below.

Per the above, that makes me wonder
what's the consensus on if Brenner survived somehow? Do we expect to see him in S2 and how so?

We never see him get killed, just pounced by the monster however it appears the monster is a portal itself and that it sucks victims to the Upside Down where it finally subdues them.

This isn't exactly correct,
as the kids start off in the gymnasium but move over to the kitchen to find chocolate pudding. So as far as Hop knows, he's giving them the correct address.

I think
he was just in a desperate position and gave them what they wanted so they could focus on saving Will. Maybe he simply trusted that Eleven would be capable of defending them (and he was not wrong).

I suppose. Still seems bizarre from a dude
riddled with loss over his own young daughter to risk the life of another kid to save a kid.

My thought is that
Hopper weighed the pros and cons and came to the conclusion that Will was less equipped to stay alive in the Upside Down than 11 was at handling whoever went after her with her super psionic powers. He made a tough call.

Edit: Vincent Grayson beat me to it.

Where can we hear the synth tracks used in the show? its from a band called survive apparently.

It doesn't look like we can at the moment, save for an extended mix of the intro which is on youtube. The band said in an interview that them being released relies on Netflix doing the releasing. I wouldn't have thought it would be that long before we get access, but god damn, if you find them then PLEASE post them in this thread! I've been searching.

Unless I'm wrong and remembers incorrectly,
they start looking in the main school building and report "nothing" before moving on to the gymnasium to look for the kids.

Hence one of the kids seeing them park across and start the search and running to warn the others.

That's how I took it, they went off to search for pudding which put them in a different building. Hop still told them she was at the school no matter how you slice it, but in his defense, he likely figured they would never let Eleven go, and saving Will and the other boys was worth the sacrifice.

I wonder if Eleven will eventually become like a surrogate daughter to Hop as series continues. I also wonder if Eleven will be able to sense Mike from the upside down and reach out to him at some point, I'd imagine she'd likely just live in his house on the other side.

When did they cite Carpenter as an influence? Every article I've read about the series suggests that their chief inspirations were Stephen King and Steven Spielberg, and I can't think of any 80's film from either featuring a synth-driven score.

Fire Starter had a synth based score from Tangerine Dream and Survive, the duo behind the synth score, even took a small sample from Tangerine Dream to use for the Stranger Things score. The creators have also been interviewed talking about Carpenter, as well as King and Spielberg, being big influences on the show as well as a ton of other things.

So glad there is an OT for this. I started watching on Sunday, but I'm only half way through. Hopefully, I get to finish it all tonight. I really like it so far. I find the concept very interesting and hoping that a lot of questions get answered in the remaining episodes. I'll leave for now and be back once I've completed it so I can give my impressions and partake in conversation.

Soundtrack for this show is really great so far. The synth, the spooky themes, and the licensed tracks (The Clash!).

Aesthetic is on point, early 80s era is on point, the child actors are great. This is exactly the kind of show I've been needing, and I'm loving every bit of it. I think I'm on episode 8 so I don't want to ruin anything by reading something I shouldn't so I'll be back in this thread when I've finished the season.

I mean, there's a scene in the show where someone is watching a scene from The Thing, and a poster for The Thing in the basement where the kids play D&D. It's a pretty clear influence. Also a Michael Myers mention.

Was this posted? Most in demand digital show (and 2nd most overall) last week.

http://www.parrotanalytics.com/news/top-10-most-in-demand-shows-in-the-us-17-23-july-2016/

Top 10 Digital Originals:

In the first week after its release, Netflix’s Stranger Things has overtaken Orange is the New Black as the most popular digital original series with over 3 times the demand of the former top show.

BoJack Horseman also released new episodes recently, but its demand did not exceed that of Marco Polo, though it may grow next week as the premiere was near the end of the week, on July 22nd.

Making a Murderer was back in the top ten as news that it would return for another season was released on July 19th.

Top 10 Overall:

Though Game of Thrones remains the most in-demand series, Stranger Things has more demand this week than last week’s rank two show, Mr. Robot.

Several shows in the top ten, such as The Walking Dead and Teen Wolf, increased in demand this week despite the fact that they are not airing, possibly due to news from the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend.

The popularity of the app Pokémon Go has clearly spilled over to the original series, which ranks ninth overall this week.

Just go ahead and confirm S2, Netflix.

It also hammers the 80's nostalgia gong way too hard. If you want to make a film or TV series that looks and feels like something from the 80's, that is fine. But shows in the 80's weren't constantly referencing popular culture of the era. Not every character has to have a poster on the wall for some cult 80's movie. Not every scene has to have a heavily synthesized score. Characters in 80's flms don't explicitly mention bands or song names, other than the rare reference to Van Halen on Bon Jovi.

Hmm... you are not very familiar with 80s movies I presume? Hell I was watching cinema sins just now for Poltergeist and Nightmare on Elm Street and stuff like posters in the kids rooms were like the first sins to be pointed out lol

Even E.T. has like a 3 minute scene of Elliot explaining all Star Wars characters.

And no heavy synthesized music? You are joking right? Even the teen dramas were full on synth, I seriously have no idea what you are talking about.

I really can't wait to see more
of the Upside-Down as I felt like we only scratched the surface of it. They said they have a 30-page document of stuff on it, which is CRAZY considering how little we really came to understand it. I really hope it has it's own in-depth mythos and ecology.

I think my gf liked the manly nature of Hopper. She made a gesture or two and praised him.
Probably that 80's thing where it's a combination of raggedness, decency and not being photo-model/shaved-chest perfect.
Also he's tall.

This show has blown up in popularity, I must inquire, was there a lot of hype for it before it's release? Or did it just sneak up on everyone? I hadn't heard about this until like days before it released and even then it wasn't until I heard all the praise that I had to watch it.

I think there was a cool teaser like almost six months back but it has been very low-key all the way. The success is definitely from new word of mouth instead of a hype-campaign prior.

Time to grow some stubble out. Just don't take up smoking or (finale spoilers)
leave Eggos in the forest.

Hi, I'm nortonff. I spend my life going into threads to say that I don't care about the topic of the thread. It's a really good use of my time.
I watched the first five episodes in a row yesterday. I just couldn't stop.

Absolutely agree, the score is heavily influenced by John Carpenters work from the late 70's and early 80's.
The music playing during the scene when Will gets taken away in the shed was channeling Carpenters "The Fog", same goes for a scene from the fifth episode when the government agents start searching the junkyard for the kids, the score playing in the background is straight from "Escape From New York".

Cannot really get excited about this unless they tell a story about a different cast.

They already confirmed it's a sequel and based on other stuff they said, it was the plan from the start. They intended to keep the same cast. The 30-page
Upside-Down document
would kind of be useless if they intended to just scrap all of it.

That's actually really damn impressive for a show that had no real hype before release and no major marketing campaign pushing it. Before the show came out I remember a trailer and a thread of a couple pages and that was it on GAF. Even less over the rest of the internet and now its competing with some huge name shows with giant fanbases built over years. Kudos to the Duffer Bros, they deserve it.
