Fire Emblem Direct - January 18th, 4PM CST (Japan confirmed, FE Mobile unveiling)

Honestly this whole Direct was like, "close but no cigar" for me.

Fire Emblem remake coming out in four months! ...but it's for the 3DS.
Fire Emblem amiibo! ...but it's a two-pack, and I only want one of them.
Fire Emblem Warriors out this Fall, looks great! ...but Warriors gameplay isn't for me.
Fire Emblem Mobile out in two weeks! ...but it has a god-awful artstyle.
Fire Emblem Switch announced! ...but with absolutely no details.

Kind of crazy that there's three FE games out this year and I'm not really interested in any of them. Fingers crossed for 2018, though!

Pre-Holiday 2017 is essentially Switch Early-Access lol.

That was fucking good, buying all of these. The mobile game looks great as well.

And it looked a lot better than Hyrule Warriors
and DQ Heroes Switch

Vaporwhat? Lol

Console mainline fire emblem isn't coming out till 2018. In my eyes its vaporware currently - no title, no graphics, nothing.

You know, for the first Direct with a mobile game, I think it went rather well. It was presented well, and the fandom mostly seems to have accepted it just fine.

We're busy fighting over whether they should have uprezed Echoes for Switch, whether Musou should be cross platform, and whether they should have omitted the Switch game announcement.

I'm glad Fire Emblem Warriors is releasing in the fall to help fill out the Switch schedule. If its got enough FE elements, I may dip for it.

That Direct was way better than I anticipated. Thinking back to having to spend six months trawling Ebay to find a legit copy of Fire Emblem on GBA, where we are now is amazing. Four FE games in one Direct is nuts.

Granted I'm not into mobile/gacha stuff at all, and the Switch game is a total mystery, but the former will be great for some people and probably make stacks of cash for Nintendo, while the latter's announcement is a great reassurance for fans that FE is coming to our TV screens and is definitely one of their top franchises now.

Echoes looks great and I'm really excited! Never played the original and I'm looking forward to the twists on the formula it brings. Plus the character art is top drawer.

If anything, this does raise the hope for more bombs to be dropped via Directs concerning the Switch. I'm fully expecting a Pokémon Direct before E3 as well as maybe a Smash Direct (though I could see Smash 4 Deluxe/Switch being announced at E3).

I'm a little shocked that they didn't show Smash at the presentation.

Maybe the additions are going to be more extensive than we thought, or maybe we're getting a totally new game.

I doubt that we're getting Smash 5 this soon after Smash 4's DLC wrapped up. That said, I'm keeping my expectations at a reasonable minimum (only 2 additional characters, a BotW Mii Costume, & some 3DS content).

I've always felt the additions were going to be quite extensive personally. Considering this will likely be the only Smash game coming to Switch I can see them going all out. Smash generates so much hype every generation that I can't imagine them skipping out on that by only adding 2 new characters. I'm not sure I expect to see it this year anymore, but I know i'm interested to see what they do with the FE characters.

I enjoyed the whole direct and it kind of makes me want to give Fates another shot. For some reason that game never clicked for me. The pace felt too rushed, I never got immersed into the story, and everything felt more trivial/game-like than Awakening where I connected more with the characters and the world. I think part of having the castle be a weird separate dimension, on top of other game systems. makes FE Fates feel like a playground which didn't really work for me.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I'm playing through Birthright for the first time right now and it's pretty awful.

I've started outright skipping the cutscenes, and that's something that I never do with any game. The writing is just so bad.

Maybe Conquest/Revelations are better.

Obviously Sakurai had to wait for the new Fire Emblem characters he's going to add to Smash Switch to be revealed first. :p

The writing does not get any better in either of the other games but the map structure and objectives are muuuuch better than birthright.

The story is worse in Conquest, but I firmly believe the map and overall system design in it is some of the best in the series.

Yeah that's what I did too. I might just replay Awakening instead. Yeah, I'll do that.

Out of curiosity, why Gaiden? Most fans I've heard go on about Thracia or Genealogy.

seniority most likely and they did remake Marth's two games already. Might as well start off were you left off.

Plus It a rather different game then the rest, why not experiment a bit

I think Gaiden was the one title that, though not the most wanted in terms of getting a remake, was the one that needed a remake the most. FE2 has aged poorly at best, and a remake might be what it needs to bring it up to the same level as the other FE titles.

On a different note, one thing I am oddly looking forward to is seeing which VA's they got to play the pre-Awakening cast. I think Narcien is voiced by Kaiji Tang (sounds like him) and we got to get a glimpse of the voices for Nino, Ogma and Navarre. Anyone else anticipating this?

It sounded fully voice acted during those text cutscenes, but I don't speak Japanses, so maybe it was just me hearing what I wanted to hear.

This Direct was way more impressive than I expected. In the next two years, Fire Emblem is getting:

1) A mobile game
2) A remake
3) An amiibo line
4) A spinoff
5) A mainline game

That's basically 5-star treatment from Nintendo. What a renaissance this franchise has experienced.

I'm talking about Fire Emblem Heroes, not Echoes. Although yes, it will be neat to see who they got for the FE2 cast (mostly Palla, Catria, Est and Zeke)

Whoops. My bad. Well I heard Tharja and Azura is back for sure. Didn't personally like Lilina tho

I wonder how many of these characters are going to be voiced?

I don't think I'd call it a renaissance since it never really got there before.

But it's a series they are pushing since it got there. But I hope they don't over-push it, since that'd be bad. 3 versions of Fates and 6 FE characters in Smash put me at a limit. By the end of the year I might be tired of Fire Emblem.

The characters were saying everything in the text box. I'm not fluent, but I can barely read it enough to tell they sad the whole thing instead of a short clip.

Oh wow. That would be neat if the whole game was like that. Of course if the VA is good.

It really is astonishing when it seems like a short time ago we didn't even know for sure if Awakening was coming out here until someone asked Reggie where it was after an E3 presentation had it suspiciously absent.

The Gamexplain guys pointed out in their discussion, but one of the big takeaways from this Direct is that Nintendo really does see Fire Emblem as a global franchise now.
Heroes, Echoes, and Warriors are all launching simultaneously worldwide. No more waiting 9 months for a game from Japan.

Not even Kirby gets this treatment.

We Pokemon/Mario tier now

Animal Crossing is bigger than Fire Emblem, so it's big 5 now.
Yeah I know. Next AC and if Mobile done right will wipe the floor with FE. It usually sells better worldwide except that amiibo game.

But hey, 4 years ago it was right on the verge on being dead. I'll take top 5. Quite a remarkable turnaround

I don't see Animal Crossing mobile doing as well as this.
RPGs and strategy games are much bigger successes on mobile than simulation.
And I don't think Animal Crossing fans are as willing cattle as Fire Emblem fans, as seen by the amiibo/card (though Cipher is different) enthusiasm.

I guess Animal Crossing Direct will be next unless they announce another delay on the mobile game.

I was going to say that Animal Crossing won't be as heavy on the gacha elements, but people go crazy for specific villagers.

AC is far more appealing to casual players. If the customization options are as plentiful as the series is known for, I think it'll be very successful.
