Nintendo Direct September 13th for Switch and 3DS

Great market analysis there, bud. Better call all publishers and tell them your findings. You'll save them tons of money.

It has been shown time and time again that portability in and of itself isn't a selling point to much people.

The Vita is the latest example.

There's a reason you can count on one hand the amount of publishers' game on the Switch.

The question I'm left with after E3 and this direct is "What the fuck are Retro working on?".
We've literally neither seen nor heard anything.

It might be another Raven Blade situation. The fact we haven't heard anything since Tropical Freeze came out doesn't inspire confidence that development on their next project has been progressing smoothly.

I'd honestly rather them have done Mario Party Top 100 on Switch than whatever crappy new one they come up with.

Definitely agree with this one and I'm someone who still actively uses his 3DS. It looks great, but Mario Party belongs on a platform where local multiplayer is easy to set up.

I honestly think the lack of Retro news is just a side effect of modern Nintendo's somewhat strict adherence to the philosophy of "don't show it until it's close enough to releasing". This direct was clearly meant to showcase short term releases.

I am excited about Mario for sure! Zelda and Mario will be great for me this year, especially considering I'm not very far along in BOTW. Thanks for your nice response.

I admitted I was being melodramatic, but it seemed to still rub a couple of posters on here a very wrong way. I think Mario looks great and I intend on picking it up. Just disappointed in the no VC thing (so far) as well as there being nothing outside of Odyssey that interests me.
I'm right there with you, although I'm totally digging Octopath. I wasn't expecting huge gameplay reveals but I thought we'd at least get some online/UI news.

Pretty happy with the Direct. No Platinum, but Xenoblade and Octopath Traveller look sweet.

Shame Xeno won't have dual audio though.

Definitely.

Well, that was certainly a Direct. I guess we'll see the next one in January/February. It improved the picture for the rest of 2017, so in that sense it did its job adequately.

- Highlight of the show for me was easily Octopath: despite the lack of a finalized title it looks like it's closer than we think (February was the old slot for the Bravely series, depending on region), the text is localized, we're getting a demo, it's gorgeous, and it's the most exciting game on the table right now as far as JRPGs go. I'm actively dreading the possibility that I won't have enough time to get the most out of Xenoblade 2 before Octopath clears it off the table.

- I need to hear price/release information on Snipperclips Plus, but in any case I'm glad it's receiving content, as concerns about the original game's brevity were the only thing holding me back from picking it up.

- Back in January I was sure we'd really be getting Xenoblade 2 in 2018 in Japan, maybe 2019 for the localization, just based on how little time had elapsed since XCX and how prone this series was to delays. By E3 it was clear I was wrong, and I am still happy to be wrong.

- Odyssey has already made its case several times over, so I can't say I was even that attentive to its segment. I've seen too much.

- The Arcade Archives selections are nice to have for local play (depending on price), but I do wonder about redundancy with the eventual online-enabled retro package for the subscription plan next year, where we are also getting Balloon Fight. Subtle differences between the arcade and NES games won't matter much for most players.

- Among new surprises: first-party content would have been more relevant to me than Doom or Wolfenstein (and in either case I want to hear about motion aiming before I'm at all interested), but Bethesda's commitment to the platform before Skyrim has even been market-tested is an encouraging sign in many ways, and I'm sure many others will be happy.

- Good lord, that Tenta Brella.

- I'm a little relieved I won't have to budget for more 3DS software past Metroid (though I'll note we didn't hear about Sushi Striker).

- No Platinum anytime soon, I guess, but it doesn't change the knowledge that they're working on something.

- No Stardew or Hollow Knight, but both of those games are on their own schedules depending on hold-ups like certification, and we'll hear from the developers (or the eShop on short notice) soon enough.

So: on par. Maybe a little slimmer than usual with the lack of a retail-scale first-party announcement, as we typically get at least one.

My Switch looks to be continuously busy through December (and probably beyond given how long XB2 is likely to be), and that's what matters.

Tons of games to play this year for a Switch/3DS owner. Not sure why people need to know about every game scheduled for 2018 right now. They'll announce new games and information as we draw closer to their completion/release.

If they told you everything planned for 2018, what difference would it make? Then people would just be complaining in the early 2018 Direct about how there's no new announcements because everything was announced last year. Would people be happier if they didn't mention Prime 4 at E3 and instead announced it today? Would that somehow change things?

I'm having trouble finding a game they showcased today.

It looked like Chrono Trigger/I Am Setsuna gameplay, anyone like to help me find the name of this game?

I think it's a matter of cost efficiency. If they would release it on the Switch, they would have to redo all the graphics to HD. Repackaging it on 3DS is probably a pretty cheap way to extend the 3DS software support.

Other than Mario, pretty much everything I was personally interested in was 2018

Mario Party 100 and Kirby Battle Royal being on 3DS makes me sad :/

I was hoping that this event would completely sell me on XC2 as someone who's never played the other games but finds the setting and so forth interesting. The presentation just left me sitting on the fence about picking it up though. That, Mario and BotW are the main games I am interested in picking up a Switch over the holidays for but my confidence in pulling the trigger on that purchase is waning a bit.

Mother 3 MIA but I think it's time to let that one go. Meh.

Direct was meh. I can see why people are excited for Doom and Wolfy 2, but they dont interest me on Switch. Everything else was a known quantity really.

And what the hell Golf Story. Still no date?

These kind of directs have been focusing on short term releases for a while now, whoever expected any different really has no idea of what they're talking about. Some of us kept through the dark times when WiiU Directs and early 3DS Directs were a thing so this "worst event ever" hyperbole is also factually wrong.

This was pretty good for what it was, all releases between now and early 2018, with only a couple 3rd party announcements potentially going past that.

I don't know why I got my hopes up for Smash, but I did :<. At best, if it was targeting 2018 they'd probably save that bombshell for E3. We also didn't any new info on "2017" indies at all, including Hollow Knight, which is what I'm most looking forward to there.

Two huge announcements for me were a Riot/Tencent MOBA (very interesting), and, more importantly, Wolfenstein freaking 2. A current-gen shooter that won Best of E3 Awards ported to Switch, holy shit.
Still prolly gonna get it on PS4 though 'cause I ain't waitin, lol.

I'm actually tired of seeing them dedicate time to Odyssey at this point, because I already know it is going to be amazing, lol. Just call me next month when I can pick it up.

Do you think a switch port of smash is still on the cards now? Next year too late?
I think we are more likely to be getting Smash 5 at this point, which is a shame - a shame only because Smash 4 is already great (with 60 freakin characters and I-don't-even-know how many stages) and feels like it didn't get its due time in the sun. A whole new game has the potential to be exciting, but also forces us to go through another year of speculation and drama on whether the physics are good and who's in and who's out all over again.

Either way, with Pokemon and Fire Emblem already confirmed Smash feels like the one thing that's missing.
..besides Animal Crossing.
And I needs it.

I can see these 3DS games being 2018/2019 Switch port fodder to fill in release schedules. I don't really see why they'd fund/greenlight Mario Party, Metroid and Mario RPG to die on the 3DS.
