Nintendo Direct September 13th for Switch and 3DS

Heh, seems like the best way to temper your positivity about a Direct is to read through the thread after watching it.

I liked it, even the 3DS segment. Odyssey looks like it might be the first 64-style 3D Mario game I'll like. I didn't expect to see Doom and Wolfenstein at all, that was a huge shock. They're not the kind of games I play, but it's great to have them around for those who do play them. Seeing all this footage for Octopath Traveler and Xenoblade 2 has actually raised my interest for them, whereas I wouldn't have given them a second glance otherwise. I'm actually not bothered by the fact that other heavy-hitters haven't been announced yet. Better to keep momentum going for years instead of blowing your load early and then dropping off a cliff like the Wii.

I skipped out on the Neon Red Joy-Con hoping Nintendo would eventually come out with regular red ones sometime next year. I was surprised how quick they have already been announced, but I guess it makes sense for Mario Odyssey.

PLEASE NINTENDO, SELL THE RED JOY-CON SET SEPARATELY.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Crap, I totally thought this was tomorrow. Looks like I didn't really miss much though.

You can take them console games on the go.

What more reason so you need?

Hey listen, not everyone actually goes outside and plays their games that way. Some people stay home all day to get their gaming in then, okay?

I have to say, this was a solid Direct, but I am absolutely shocked we didn't see Platinum here at all, and even more blown back we didn't see the BotW DLC. Like, I was prepared to see some hype story cutscenes... we didn't get that. I was prepared to see the reactions on GAF to Wonderful 102. I wasn't prepared for neither to happen, smh.

Cool, densely packed Direct. Just falls into the category of a lot of Directs where a vast majority of the content, while good, is stuff I won't buy either because it doesn't interest me or I'm getting the titles on other platforms. Really looking forward to a Direct that knocks my socks off, for my taste, showcasing a wave of content that's exclusive and exciting.

Wolf and DOOM are good scores for Nintendo/portable fans. Wolf in particular is great, even if it's vaguely late, as it's a proper modern title and not a port of something older. Bethesda's support is commendable, and I suspect we haven't seen stuff like Dishonored 2 is because of engine optimization quirks. id TECH for DOOM scales very, very well.

I do wish Nintendo would offer Switch alternatives for the 3DS. I get it, I get it; market penetration makes supporting the 3DS desirable. And these are games likely made by smaller teams on limited production budgets. But given the immense breadth of performance difference between the two platforms I can't imagine porting from 3DS to Switch, even as VC, would be tooooooo difficult for most titles. Given the Switch is absolutely iterative of a portable successor it'd just be nice to see these games in some way supported.

Nevertheless, good stuff. I still feel the Direct for me is yet to come, and there's a lot of first year quirks Nintendo hasn't elaborated on yet (like an OS and store update). I also feel some expected ports, like Smash or stuff from Platinum, are overdue for announcement and would have made good first year fillers. Alas, not much anybody can do about that.

Mario is the next big game and that's about it for me. Was hoping for a bit more to grab my attention over the rest of the year, but there's big games on other platforms that should keep me busy. Hoping for a bigger 2018 :)

Hasn't it largely been a good indicator up until now though? I know it has with the Xenoblade stuff iirc.

Ehh. Not really. There've been a ton of times where X developer retweets it and it's a nothingburger. A retweet is not really meaningful in itself. Even at most it's usually correlation and not causation.

Guys, I'm broke this winter.

Doom, Xenoblade 2, Mario, Dragonball, Battle Chasers, Sine Mora, Superbeat Xonic, Fire Emblem Warriors, Skyrim, Rocket League + tons of indies.

Best first year for a console ever for me.

Same. To me the switch has had a phenomenal first year. I was thinking I was just going to get NB2k18, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2 and be done for the year.

then motherfucking Doom comes out for the switch. First real FPS on the switch. That's a curve ball for me. I'm interested. Also the arcade games might be fun.

I don't mind that there is no Smash/Bayonetta/or another port right now. We can wait till 2018 for those. This year is packed.

Switch keeps on keeping on. I need to make a concrete list of games I will be getting for the rest of the year.

Most likely:
Fire Emblem Warriors
Super Mario Odyssey
Skyrim

And then there's Rayman Legends and Pokken to look into.

And then there's all the 3DS content that looks so great.

I agree with this, and it's what I've said all along. Yeah, 3DS was a very successful platform, and it's still selling well, so it makes plenty of sense to bring games to it still. But, why not also bring those games to Switch? It's obvious that Switch is the 3DS's successor, and with no Backwards Compatibility of any kind, it would make sense to port at least some of these late games to Switch in a "cross-gen" fashion, kinda like BOTW. The more games it has to offer, the better.

It's wierd when you consider that both systems are portable. It almost feels like they're competing with one another at this point, and they aren't really complementary of each other or serving different markets the way, say, 3DS and Wii U did. Also, a big part of Switch's appeal was supposed to be that it would play all of Nintendo's games going forward, and software development would be consolidated for this one platform, and that's not really true as of yet. While I still think this is happening, I wish it wasn't taking so long, and that at least all of Nintendo's major releases this year ( "cough" Metroid "cough") so I've been released on Switch as well.

I was pretty happy with the Direct overall. New info on games I'm interested in and some surprises. I'm pretty happy with the games that are coming out and the ones I'm not interested in I can easily ignore.

No, it wasn't. Why the fuck is that unexpected? Did I miss Reggie say "Animal Crossing Switch news this year!"?

I didn't say exclusively Switch lol. Just any kind of Animal Crossing news in general.

For instance, Animal Crossing mobile was already confirmed and the last news about it had it pegged as a late 2017 release. Unless there was another delay announcement that I missed.

So personally I expected there'd be something about it in this direct about upcoming 2017/early 2018 releases.

My personal megatons would have been Stardew Valley dropping today or Smash Switch being announced.

But it was a decent showing regardless.

I believe, the key element is, that all the big releases (Mario, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, etc.) will come the next months and Nintendo properly wants people talking about those games. Not already the next ones (Kirby and Yoshi are AA games with a niche audience, so they fit anytime, and Kirby also has the 25th anniversary going for him, which is why we know about the Switch game so soon).
There will be a Direct in December, which will give us the next games to get hyped about until E3. Well, there has to be a Direct, since there aren't any clear news about the payed Online-Service.

Looking at Twitter and I've come to the realisation that Smash and Animal Crossing are the 'Poochies' of Nintendo. Whenever they're not on screen hundreds of twitter users will ask "where's Animal Crossing?" or "where's Smash?"

Metroid was like that until they released a Metroid game. Animal Crossing skipped Wii I so people want a new one.

Thank you Capcom, people bought your overpriced game and you delivered, unprecedented support indeed.
Not even Okami!

Why is Nintendo seemingly ignoring Stardew Valley on the Switch? Even the developer came out to say it's already done, and Nintendo have not said a word or promote it in any way in any of their Nindies or Direct.

I just find it weird for AC and Smash because they're massive tentpole franchises; expecting their new installments to be revealed in a regular Nintendo Direct just feels weird to me. If this were E3 2018 I could sympathise but this is a September 2017 Direct, it's nowhere near the same calibre.

Not even Okami!

Bethesda: "Lets release these hyper-violent, graphically-intensive first person shooters where you fight demons in Hell or Nazis in America on a Nintendo console!"

Capcom: "Lets release this colourful, zelda-inspired adventure game where you fight people using a paintbrush on anything but a Nintendo console!"

It's a shame Nintendo wasted their only direct of the year on old news and ports. If only they could do more they wouldn't be doomed.

Anyways, Minecraft 3ds sounds good.
I like how octopath looks. Hopefully it's fun.
I'm looking forward to morphies law but I hated how they showed it off.
A moba on the switch is nice but I don't know how good it is. I'll have to read up on the reviews
More rocket league is always welcome
I like how the new oddysey levels look.
Im exited for Doom and Wolfenstein
And I wish they'd mentioned stardew valley.

Don't think we've had a first-year catalog like this for a Nintendo system before.

Fire Emblem Warriors + Mario in Oct. (In the same year we've had Zelda, Splatoon 2, and ARMS)
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in Dec.
DOOM this holiday; Wolfenstein 2 in 2018
Project Octopath Traveler demo right after direct.

Not to mention all the awesome third-party support - full NBA 2K18, FIFA 18, Skyrim, WWE 2K18, Dragon Quest Builders, L.A. Noire, and Resident Evil Revelations 1 + 2.

They should just drop a mic after this direct.

I wasn't really excepting Smash but if it's a port it'd be a smaller thing. I assume people are expecting Animal Crossing because the mobile game is coming out soon. Plus the direct was so long!

They didn't say that either, and I bet you if they had announced a mobile animal crossing mini game and nothing else, people would be bitching about that instead.

The same way people would be bitching if we got Animal Crossing this past March and not Zelda, they'd be bitching about "no zelda?".

Nintendo fans are both the most supportive fan base, and also the most ridiculous.

Was hoping they would start pulling back the curtain on 2018 first party stuff, but oh well. All the spotlight games looked good. Guess we'll be waiting till January I'd they follow what they did over the last year.

Completely forgot about this, d'oh.

It's interesting times where I'm passing on Nintendo platform games because they're on the PC too... not that the mobile aspect isn't tempting me on some of them...

Catching up bit by bit...
Lyn, finally!
XC2 looks anime as fuck, definitely buying.
Octopath looks neat. As someone who grew up with NES/SNES RPGs, I'm in 100%. Big SD3 vibes.
Odyssey still looks amazing.
More snipperclips! Yay!
Minecraft was out of nowhere.
I heard good things about Dragon Quest Builders, so I'll keep an eye on that one
Bunch more Amiibos I won't buy

Lots of other bits. I caught the various sub-clips on the Switch store first since my laptop speakers are screwed up (as they appear to have added the full Direct last) so the impact of some of the surprises is lessened, but that doesn't make the bits look less awesome. 3DS is sorta retired for me, save for Metroid and the pile of backlogged games I have on it (so...many...rpgs), so skipped over most of the 3DS bits.

Thumbs up. Good to see some 3rd party stuff showing up in good amounts.

I would've liked to see a bit more Nintendo 1st party for confirmed 2018, especially since god knows when you'll actually get Metroid Prime or Pokemon, but whatever. They decided time wasn't right for that apparently. I'd guess they'll have another January blowout where they do that, since right now the confirmed lineup is what, Yoshi, Kirby, a Fire Emblem game we've never even seen, Octopath Traveler, and Wolfenstein.

It's pretty cool to see Bethesda in so hard on Nintendo Switch. Hopefully it's successful for them so they show the platform's potential for other "AAA" 3rd parties.

Odyssey still looks completely fantastic. Octopath Traveler feels like a game I'd really love, though with any JRPG we'll see where the story goes.

The one 3rd party port I'll definitely rebuy is Rocket League. The rest? We'll see, maybe Wolfenstein but I'd like to know it's a good port first.

The one game I'm still not sold on is Xenoblade 2. And like, I've played the previous 2 installments, I have a general idea of what Xenoblade is, but they just haven't done a good job selling me on this one. The action looks like a cluttered mess, even more then usual for that series. The graphics are underwhelming and not even as pretty as X, IMO. Even the plot is essentially "Escort your waifu to Elysium, why? Who knows!", though that's the one area I trust they'll make much more interesting as the game goes on. Game really needs good reviews/word of mouth for me.

Overall I'll give it a B minus.

So strange that Morphie's Law got an entire news brief segment lasting longer than Doom, Wolfenstein, LA Noire, Resident Evil, etc's small shout-outs. It seems like a cool concept but looks very 'tech-demo' to me... hmm.

It's not safe to sell your 3DS/2DS ever. lol I think we have like 2 or 3 more years of it left.

Nah we're clearly at the end here. Kirby is the last major first party game. Dillon's Rolling Western 3 is the last first party digital game. Other than that it's just some Atlus releases in 2018.

Mon Hun Stories + Metroid + Pokemon + FE warriors (if you dont own a switch) is a great last holiday lineup for the system though.

Fantastical

Death Prophet
Go download the Octopath demo. Thank me later.

I'm very excited by that but if by Q1 2018 we don't see a lot of Japanese 3rd parties jumping on board... that's not good. I think 2018 should be the time where the most stuff is announced for Switch.
