Kingdoms of Amalur demo impressions thread [Up On 360/Origin/Steam/U.S. PSN]

This just feels so cheap. WoW+GoW = this generic, simplified press-X-to-skip-dialogue piece of shit. Like so many other titles with potential these days.

I can't feel the hype for this game at all and I'm surprized that so many in this thread seems to adore it. I mean, c'mon! They should've named it Kingdoms of Generic: Generic.

Troll is obvious.

I'm waiting anxiously for the amazing game you are producing. But only if it has the letter 'Z' in 'surprised' in the title of said game.

Sounds like the ravings of a Scottish Douchebag.

Why would you play a demo for 30 hours? Serious chance you could burn out when you get the full game. I deleted the demo from my PC for this very reason after one playthrough.

No chance of that for me. I've played it on all 3 platforms in order to choose which I wanted to play, then have been replaying it on the PC from time to time just to test out different things. It's all so early in the game, it's only reaching a small portion of what will be possible. I'm loving it.

They should have named you McDouchebag... oh wait. Opinions vary, deal with it.

Yeah, fitting name, isn't it? :)

I'm surprised that so many seem to like it because it feels so...standard. I mean, is it unique in any way? No. It's got so many clichés it's silly. It's also an insult to games like Planescape Torment and BG2 to call this an RPG. Guess I'm too old and grumpy for this.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread. Has there been any word as whether or not we'll be able to change to camera distance on PC?

Yeah, they are addressing camera issues but it is going to be a patch. We don't know yet if that will be a day-1 patch or if there will be a significant wait involved though.

The lead combat designer has been taking feedback about the camera, and doing some fixes. Here's a post of his:

Just a quick update for everyone.

I've got some work in progress that addresses the options I mentioned in my second post. Overall, it's promising. I think the combination of distance adjust, camera lag adjust, and disabling auto follow addresses 95% of the camera feedback. The next step for me is to get some better tuning in, and get some assistance in fixing a bug where the camera pops when camera lag is reduced.

In the meantime, I'm going to begin cataloging the feedback on the pretty spreadsheet. I'll send another update once I've gone through these 30 pages

You see, because his is the only opinion that is right, and we're all lying.

Ah of course, and we all clearly have no taste.

What is so bad about this? We have so few RPGs in this day and age. What's wrong with standard?

How many RPGs are there with combat like this?

I guess many of us were not expecting it to reinvent the wheel and just wanted a fun RPG, with great combat in a beautiful setting. While it obviously will not appeal to everyone, please don't infer that there must be something wrong with those of us who do like it. As from the looks of things, there are quite a few of us who do. In short, I respect your right to not like the game, respect our right to find it appealing. Deal?

I hope in part two they can add some pole arms, those are my favorite weapon type :D

I hope there ambitious with there DLC and add in 3 new weapon types for each class. Pole arms for warriors, claws for rogues, and uh maybe spell books for mages? I guess work like a staff but longer range and a lot slower.

You're surprised people have opinions that differ from your own?

His name says a lot about his views of other people.

Please show me where I didn't respect your right to like it?

With so many positive comments about it I thought this was something deep and special and it all ends up with the most shallow, mainstreamed mix of God of War and WoW/generic fantasy setting I've ever played. And I wouldn't call this an RPG, it's more like action/adventure or something, no matter how many "quests" there is...

On the other hand, I expressed my opinion in a rather rude way and I apologize for it.

Really glad to hear they're working on multiple fixes for the camera, really starting to love these guys.

As long as we're on the topic of possible new weaponry for DLC/expansions, one kind of sword I've always thought was cool but haven't seen many games with anything like it is this High Elf Sword from LotR:

Basically the hilt is so long you could almost swing it around like a staff. Dunno which kind of class would benefit from a weapon like that...I just think it looks kick-ass :D

I didn't find any offense with what you said and besides this isn't an OT.

I love Planescape and all the glory day WRPGs and all but ... to call them deep as far as gameplay goes is kind of laughable. Mechanically speaking, they're rather shallow.

You may not like the combat (or not find it innovative, I suppose), but it's rather well executed in a genre that's not exactly known for that kind of combat. That's quite the feat and a lot of the high praise for the game stems from that. The rest of the game looks competent enough to be a good vehicle for that combat system.

There's also the fact that the development team has been so open with the community that it's earning some points there. Not to say the game isn't good enough without that kind of stuff but that support is very nice to see.

It most certainly is an RPG. As I am playing a role in a world filled with choices and consequences that will affect the world around me in differing ways. I am also gaining experience, leveling up and have the opportunity to build my character in many different ways. Perhaps if you had read up on the game more, you would know all of this about it. Yes, it is of the action RPG variant, but it still is most certainly an RPG for the reasons listed above.

As for the apology, thanks. I was just messing with you due to your name as well. Though, I am guessing you probably saw that one coming.

Anywhere I can go to see a lot of screens of the game? Especially stuff not in the demo? Also, any word if there will be more character creation options in the retail release?

Played the demo the other day and enjoyed it. Problems with the camera but looks like their working on it. Also some clipping bugs which I'm sure have already been mentioned. I'll probably pick this up once the price drops.

I hear the LOD stuff and I ain't touching it because there are far smarter folks than me that can explain what the demo is doing and/or if that is different than the game, and if not why not.

Thanks for at least acknowledging the issue Curt. Any way to ask one of the team members to elaborate on the issue for us?

I have been a gamer long enough to not take a demo at face value, that is why I appreciate all your feedback on things that have been fixed. From the gamers perspective all we have to go by is the demo we are provided, then hearing reassuring words from you and the team has been great on the things that have been fixed.

I do hope that the LOD/Popin has been fixed for the PC version. I understand limitations of the consoles and honeslty it does not bother me as much when playing the demo on 360/PS3, but when you have a rig that can run this game easily, the pop-in stands out extremly since it is running at a true 1080p and at 60fps it becomes even more evident.

anyone know why the demo is stuck on loading?

I assume you are on PC. If so, disable V-Sync. I have a SSD and once I disable v-sync load times were almost instant. Dont force them through drivers as this causes it as well. I beleive I have read that this has been fixed for the retail release though, so that is great news.

Compare it to WoW, an MMORPG, claim the game isn't an RPG. What exactly is your definition of an RPG? (Seriously)

The Amazon bonuses are the fate-touched weapons, plus a diving rod for finding material points in the world. Sounds hella useful.

I freaking love that you can kill pretty much everyone in the town. I could kill everyone there but the faction quest giver and the gatekeeper for the temple. I can definitely see the MMO roots in the game. I think it's moving around the world as well as some of the quest layouts. But if the MMO plays like this I'll definitely sign up.

One thing I did notice though was that the difficulty is pretty easy. On the two characters I rolled with the only enemy that was an annoyance was the wolves for my greatsword class. I know that it's early in the game but I wish it was a bit more challenging. I'll probably but it up to hard come release.

Also the greatsword/bow combo is bloody awesome for juggling enemies. Hitting them with a 3-hit combo which ends with an uppercut and then rapid firing your bow, which knocks them back a metre each time while keeping them in the air. It's a great way to create some distance between you and the enemy and then you can "Get over here!" them back into the fight and do it again.

Are there any preorder bonuses for console version does anyone know?

I'm at work and posting on my phone so I can't link to it right now but if you want to wait alittle while longer all that information will be in the OT. Also so everyone knows the OT will probably go up around noonish depends on when I wake up and get going.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Not to say it won't look a bit nicer on a higher-end rig, but the limitations of the rendering engine are still there across all three systems.

The programmers did an all-around great job for a multi-release title. Let's just hope the console makers beef up their next machines for the sequel. :)

As much as I love TF2, there pre-order bonuses from steam have a lot to be desired. I want a compass but I don't want to support GS...8(
