This is legitimate. Unless the U.S. does something about the refinery closures we're screwed. The demand is VERY low in the U.S. right now and prices are still outrageous. This is without any constant threats from Iran affecting gas. Anything big will tip the scales well over the $4 mark.

Nothing big is needed to get is over $4. I guarantee that will happen in a few weeks.

Right now we're at the highest ever for January. If the standard cyclical pattern holds, were going to fly past $4 and, IMO, past the 2008 record.

2010 was the only year without the cyclical summer spike. Every other year has had it, and we will this year.

Just compare to 2011, a year where the economy was still depressed.

If only people weren't so easily sold on the idea of Obama using draconian measures to stop and stall domestic oil production, this could be a great rallying point against our national dependence on oil.

Isn't FL winner-take-all?

According to what I just saw on Rachel Maddow's show I guess the penalties for moving the primary up was that they got half the delegates and they can't do winner take all. They have to split up the delegates. But apparently FL doesn't want to do that. They want it to be winner take all. So there might be a bit of a fight, apparently.

Thank goodness. We don't get another debate for a while so we'll need another source for Republican infighting.

Is big oil reving up to artificially raise gas prices, something that will kick Obama out of office?

The USA is extracting more oil than ever before, but by raising gas prices, oil companies get to hear more calls for "less regulation! more drilling!" and get themselves a nice oil-baby in office.

http://www.latimes.com/business/money/la-fi-mo-gas-prices-20120130,0,3885077.story

(Idiotic) people already are blaming Obama for high gas prices. The oil companies know that a new record of $4.60 a gallon this summer means Obama is dead in the water.

Why not have the Energy Department take over the idle refineries?

Wait. What? Florida is fighting the RNC over this?

lol republicans are fucked because they are losing in a generic ballot poll by one point a year before the election? come on mang.
9 months as pointed out.

I don't take this as conclusive evidence, I just think it's great how this time last cycle everyone was like "Oh yeah, Democrats are screwed, Republicans are taking back the House and maybe even the Senate" and now it's all like "Democrats will be lucky to win 5 seats!"

Just whatever works against the Dems at the time, I guess. Other polls have had Democrats leading by 5-6 points which, if it held on election day (AND I'M NOT SAYING IT WILL BECAUSE MAYBE EUROZONE/IRAN/BLAH), would almost assure them the House.

If I'm remembering what I saw correctly, all it takes is for someone to file a challenge with the RNC, and then there might be some fighting over it. After searching the net I found these two links.

From those links it looks like it'll likely be winner take all, but there might be some fuss about it.

Oh, so here's where you guys are. What do you think of my theory about the idiotic Jennifer chick in the Google Hangout?

Maybe I'm being cynical but she is obviously not an Obama supporter and was trying to make a moment to get herself on Fox News. Since that failed and Obama even offered to personally help, she wanted him to do something ridiculous that he could get lambasted for. Glad he didn't bite.

In the future, I think they should do better vetting and get people who aren't starstruck or are trying to create a gotcha moment. Maybe several stakeholders from both sides of a debate with the President sharing his thoughts in the discussion

PS: LOL @ people thinking the first black Prez would go anywhere near weed legalization. Are you people fucking serious?

The latest PPP poll is showing a late resurgence by Newt in the last couple of days. Probably too late to close the gap especially with all the early voting. But if Newt can finish within a margin of 4-6 points, he can claim a moral victory and continue on decent footing. Particularly since the Mitten campaign has been doing quite a bit of gloating the last several days.
While it may not qualify as an outlier, that particular poll conspicuously diverges from the other data. The only other poll approximating their results was conducted by a firm with an apparent Gingrich bias. It could be resultant from a small sample size or wonky likely voter screen. Regardless, the other polls indicate Romney has a double-digit advantage.
Based on what, though? He was absolutely shredded in the debates.
Yeah. It is a bit confounding. I think it was likely a methodological issue.

Nationalization probably wouldn't go over too well.

It's the right thing to do. Regional monopolies are stupid, and so is excessive redundancy.
I pay close to 3 times as much per watt than people living 2 miles east of me. I have one choice for broadband Internet - and that's pretty slow still, cable is non-existant, however even if it was it would still be limited to one provider that covers the entire state and several of the neighboring, etc.

Free market makes a lot of sense for combs, cars, restaurants, computers, phones, canned foods, soda, etc. For garbage pick up it's down right idiotic.

/rant

I am 100% for the nationalization of energy.

I think all utilities should be public as well (And I'd go so far as to say Internet access could arguably be considered such.).

The Muppets mock Fox News.

Bill O'Reilly responds.

Honestly I'm amused by it, and Bill actually seemed like a good sport about it.

I've never found Bill to be as bad as people say he is. Not a fan of him, but still.

So I'm to the point where I think I would rather see Newt as the nominee. He may not win, but if its him or Mitt Romney, I would rather have someone go up and lose to Obama that I knew believed in something, even if it was ridiculous. I don't know if any of what Mitt says is the truth or not o_O

So this is where this thread went! Glad I found it.

I am hoping beyond hope that Gingrich somehow manages to win Florida. Come on old people, come out and support your own. Keep this primary interesting.

Feels like Puerto Rico in here...

...PoliGaf what do we need to do to reapply for state-hood? GAF will gladly take our ad clicks but they won't give us a seat in the OT forum...

No Ad-monetization without representation, I say!

I know what you mean. Every time I see the Newtster on TV, sharing his knowledge with the people, I swell up with a sense of pride. Just about every other time, I get the dry heaves. But deep down I know in those moments, this truly is the best the Republican party has to offer. Mittens doesn't have that same air of self importance, as much of an asshole as that guy is. What we need is someone like Newt, who really, really believes in something, even though it is only that one thing- himself.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Gingrich is out today claiming that Romney would be horrible for religious freedom and that he's against funding for Jewish and Catholic hospitals.

I think Newt sees the writing on the wall and is now trying to appeal to every other religion. It's not surprising to see him hit this level of mudslinging.

Another incumbent 'retires' today:

Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN) announced in Indiana that he is retiring at the end of his current term, the Indianapolis Star reports.

Guys like this should count when measuring 'anti-incumbent' sentiment. Instead, his will just be considered an open seat.

That is ridiculous on all levels. When has Romney ever spoken out against any religion? or the funding of specific types of hospitals, based on religious affiliation.

I can't find the link right now, but it appeared he was referring to Romney not supporting increased funding to Catholic and Jewish hospitals while he was governor.

Trillion Dollar deficit again this year and as far as the eye can see.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0112/72205.html?tw_p=twt

The $1.079 trillion deficit now projected for this fiscal year ending Sept. 30 is a step backwards from what CBO had predicted in August. And to punch home its message, the non-partisan agency outlines an especially grim scenario in which Congress not only extends all the current Bush-era tax cuts but pulls the plug on the $1.2 trillion in sequester set in motion by the Budget Control Act last summer.

Under this scenario—which can’t be ruled out politically—deficits would stubbornly hover just under $1 trillion through 2017, adding another $4.7 trillion altogether to the mounting federal debt.

Under the more prudent—and many would say unrealistic— scenario of ending tax breaks and implementing cuts, the cumulative deficits would be $1.72 trillion or $3 trillion less from 2013-2017. But even this path comes with a warning from CBO: that debt service costs are already on the rise and will command an ever greater share of the annual budget.

“The federal budget remains out of balance throughout the decade,” the report reads. “The resulting accumulation of debt, along with rising interest rates, drives up the cost of financing that debt; in CBO’s projections, net interest costs grow significantly from 1.4 percent of GDP this year to 2.5 percent in 2022.”

To put this in some perspective, by 2017, annual interest payments on the debt would begin to rival and soon exceed what Washington will be spending on Medicaid, the state-federal healthcare program for the poor and disabled.

A few political scientists incorporate strategic retirement into their calculations. But that does not radically change the outcome. Incumbents are still reelected at an astonishingly high rate. I think it's over 75%, and that presumes anti-incumbent sentiment catalyzed every case of strategic retirement for that particular cycle. I can't remember if I read it in a book or a journal article. If you'd like, I could search for it.

Again, how does that not apply to Gingrich? He is a mendacious charlatan. I am baffled by anyone who supports Gingrich out of principle.

About fucking time. The guy's been in national office 23 days longer than I've been alive, and I just turned 29! I also went to one of his town hall meetings last year. It's been time for him to go for a while now.

he's got some big ideas and some of his plans seem to make sense. if things get worse with Obama and its proved his plans and escapades haven't worked out voting for.him is going to be iffy for me. Even if I don't fully support Newt I hope he gets the nomination

Politics aside, I think Evilore should leave a month long sticky with a title indicating which threads were recently moved to the "sent to die" area that is the Community thread. That way regulars know where to go instead of assuming Poligaf was dead or soemthing.

The Community section isn't a "'sent to die' area." Plenty of sub-groups on GAF thrive here.
