A McDonald’s franchisee says the chain will remove Angus Third Pounder burgers, Chicken Selects and apple-walnut salad, a move likely intended to clear menu space for an expected rollout of McWraps and other new items.

McEnaney Enterprises, a Princeton, Ky.-based McDonald’s operator, announced via Twitter that the Selects , the salad and Angus burgers all “are being discontinued from the McDonald’s menu.” Once existing inventory of the products are gone, the items will disappear from the menu. McEnaney also tweeted that the Hot ’n Spicy McChicken will join the menu (there at least) on March 5, followed by McWraps on March 19. Those tweets, reported first by Kentucky New Era, subsequently were pulled.

A ray of hope for Angus burger fans: A McDonald’s spokesperson told the Chicago Tribune that the chain is “reviewing options” for the Angus burgers while confirming the other items’ exit.

McDonald’s has used the Hot ’n Spicy McChicken as an LTO in multiple markets and tested McWraps in Chicago beginning last August.

Ironically, the Angus burger line was inspired by a McDonald’s franchisee in Southern California, Mike Pernecky, who wanted a product to compete in the upscale-burger category. He worked with corporate R&D to develop the final product, which rolled out nationally in July 2009 after what the company said were two years of testing.

The Angus Third Pounders were the first McDonald’s items ever to use these five ingredients: red-onion rings, full slices of bacon, sautéed mushrooms, Natural Swiss cheese and a bakery-style sesame seed roll. The burgers are offered in Deluxe, Bacon & Cheese and Mushroom & Swiss varieties. Last October, McDonald’s used the Angus burger patty for its CBO (Cheddar Bacon Onion) LTO.

Angus burgers have become important parts of the McDonald’s menu in a number of countries. Grand Angus and Mighty Angus burgers were added in Australia in August 2009 they were added in Canada in April 2011. Current LTOs at McDonald’s in Argentina are a double-Angus-patty Thai Sweet Chili burger and McWrap. Double-patty Angus Deluxe and Angus Bacon burgers are on the standard menu in Brazil.

What?

The angus burgers are the only good things on their menu, other than the breakfast options.

Hmm... weird about the Angus burgers. It was the one McD menu item I snuck in when getting home late and catching a train at Penn Station. Haven't had one in a year or so, but I remember it as pretty tasty. Are they too expensive?

I just don't think they are all that popular. Really, I have had two in the 5 years they have had them on the menu.

On one hand I'm pleased as I always thought the angus burgers tasted awful, but they're replacing them with wraps? Eh, no thanks. Want to try the spicy chicken though.

Angus burgers tastes exactly like their others to me. I haven't eaten at McDonald's in well over a year now, and I have found no reason to go back. So many better fast food places.

So they are getting rid of the best thing on their menu (Angus/Chicken Selects) to make room for more of the worst thing on their menu. (Wraps.)

Makes sense.

Fuck McDonalds. I hope they just disappear from the face of the Earth.

Angus burgers were one of the few things they did right. I can't eat their normal crap burgers as an adult, unless I'm completely desperate. And now they're going to replace it with more shit I never order.

McNuggets and Fish Sandwiches and breakfast it is then.

edit:

vv: yeah the mushroom swiss one was the only one that was any good, but damn, was it good.

And yeah, Hardees/Carls burgers are so much better, but we don't have those here.

I like their mushroom swiss one a bit but their angus burgers tend to be just as dry etc as their normal burgers.

Carls Jr angus burgers on the other hand are so good.

These are so expensive now. almost 4 bucks for a little pollock fillet is robbery.

Angus doesnt taste good by itself, you have to have cheese and bacon on it which brings up the price even more.

I dont care though the mcdonalds here still sells the big xtra.

remember me
Angus burgers were garbage. Tried them a couple of times, and they actually tasted much worse than their classic burgers.

McDonalds Canada had a far superior Angus burger that ended up getting replaced by the same ones that are in the US.

Angus burgers are the only ones McDonald's sells that taste almost like a burger. I don't think they're as popular due to higher price. Most people load up on the hobo menu.

That said if they want to clear stuff off the menu they should drop the mcbistro stuff. Absolutely disgusting.

Might be regional, because the angus here in australia which I've had is pretty flavourful.

Ciabatta bun, thick-sliced cheddar cheese, some kind of mustard-mayo mix that was amazing...

Hmm I guess I'm in the minority. I thought their attempt at a restaurant style burger was not very good. Then again when I go there I usually get stuff off the value menu.

I think these are replacing the Angus Third-Pounders in the US:

I've always wondered why the McRib and Shamrock Shake (which is currently in stores now!) are the only formerly discontinued items McDonalds continues to bring back for a limited time. Why don't they briefly bring back other cult classic items like the Arch Deluxe, Big N' Tasty, McPizza, McLobster, or these soon to be discontinued items like the Chicken Selects!

The Mclobster was so good...even though it destroyed my bowels for a night.

Man I loved the Big N Tasty!! It was such a good value, too.
