Guys, he's right about a rich man single handedly taking down Gawker. His name is Nick Denton.

I don't think the concern is that a billionaire can crush a company for exposing their private life like that. I think it's concerning that it takes a billionaire to do it at all, because that means the little people that don't have the money just have to live with it. That is the worse evil by far.

A perfect example of that came to light during the Hogan trial. To show how horrible the site was, the lawyers brought up an article (written by the same person who posted Hogan's video) about a random person's sex tape (which may have been rape). The girl in the video begged for them to take it down. They did, but only after the Gawker editor had replied with "blah, blah, blah." You can't be the scum of the internet for long and not expect to get blasted.

Hogan didn't do any of this.

you can criticize thiel's tactics while still hating gawker. it's super fucked up that people are celebrating this. if gawker had failed financially because their site is shit I would be celebrating with you people. but that isn't what happened.

When it comes crashing down and it hurts inside......

Hopefully those who lose their jobs can land on their feet, but that's the risk you take when you willingly work for an organization that's clearly as shitty as Gawker is.

Being sued for being a bunch of shitbags that ignore court orders would fall under financial failure I think.

EDIT: I do understand what you meant by actual financial failure, but they 100% deserved this for the numerous missteps over the years.

What a hero.

I really hate Kotaku, Joystiq.com was my shit. Is there really no other good game blog out there? I like a collective list of stuff being announced ect.

I am by no means a religious person but I am praying to God right now that Gawker goes under. The sites under the Gawker umbrella are horrible with shitty practices being encouraged.

For the individuals I do enjoy that write for Kotaku they will land on their feet.

Gamergaters at reddit and here must be very happy with this news.

Gawker would be so happy to see how they've successfully influenced you into branding anyone who disagrees with them with a laundry list of insulting and irrelevant things.

What does this even have to do with video games man??

I've been wondering, if Gawker had pulled the video as the Judge ordered them to do, do you think Hogan would have still had a case and this outcome still could have been the end result? Or was their defiance the final straw?

Failing to follow court orders seemed to be the final straw. Everything that came out in court showed just how horrible Gawker really is. Here are some comments from the guy that actually posted the video on Gawker talking about what they wouldn't post

Jurors in Hulk Hogan’s sex video trial on Wednesday heard a videotaped deposition of Gawker’s former editor in chief — saying he’d draw the line at posting the sex tape of a celebrity who is under 4 years old.

A.J. Daulerio, 41, was sitting ramrod straight in the Florida courtroom during the awkward moment when he was asked on video by Hogan’s lawyer, “Can you imagine a situation where a celebrity sex tape would not be newsworthy?”

Daulerio answered flatly, “If they were a child.”

“Under what age?” attorney Charles Harder asked.

“Four,” he said.

“No four-year-old sex tapes, OK,” Harder said.

He was called out for it during court and said it was just a joke...about child porn...in his deposition.

Wow, I was just watching this before reading your response. Talk about timing...

Even if the parent company of Gawker survives out of this somehow I can't see them retaining all of their current brands. They will have to massively downsize.

I can't speak for the person you're quoting, but for me, it's because they can't write a single article without tossing in their social-political commentary as well. I don't care what a person's stance is, but if I come to a video game site, I want to read about video games, not hear that kind of stuff. I stopped reading Kotaku like 3 or 4 years ago because of that garbage.

If I want to read social-political articles or comments, I'll visit one of the 3 news websites I frequent, not a video game site.

So in other words you want PR talk.

When people shit on Kotaku, it's not because of their behind the scenes features, leaks (though, lol at still pretending Final Fantasy Versus XIII was cancelled) or even their news reporting. It's all the mindless drivel in between. Before I dropped the site from being something I semi-regularly visited (at one point it was a site I used to visit daily), I vividly remember them posting an article about which Animal Crossing character had inspired the most porn. If that's what you want from a video game website, go ahead.

Lol exactly. For those who frequent the site, how much of this remains in 2016?

Okay I guess I'll drop this because it appears people are painting me as the patron saint of gawker

I'll just reiterate that I find the idea that one person single-handedly destroyed a company (as bad as that company might be) over a grudge to be a bit unsettling

Gawker was their own worst enemy.

If the people running Gawker weren't all garbage tier then none this would have happened.

They lost because a judge and jury said they were WRONG.

Year 2016 - Hulk Hogan kills Kotaku. Headlines that are not made up.

LOL yeah that is really sad.

Which headline from this year is fake?

- Taylor Swift pregnant from now estranged boyfriend
- Son of Jerry Jones is suing him to take control of the Cowboys
- Hulk Hogan kills Kotaku

I totally could see those 1st two happening, but the third is just out there

We get it, people are still gonna talk about hulk hogan in this thread because the guy is a walking cartoon muscle man and peter thiel is a guy they've never heard of.

well yeah. everyone is going to miss the forrest for the trees because it's fun. and we're going to continue to let asshole libertarian billionaires do whatever the fuck they want. and I'm not just talking about this forum.

I'd say we should hold off on being concerned by the idea of billionaires pursuing vendettas against media orgs when it results in something other than a company being punished for doing something that they very obviously should have been punished for. Gawker made their own bed, Thiel just made sure they got fucked in it.

Yeah, that's the thing- if the subject had stayed on the Hogan tape they might have had a chance, but once things like that and the "please take down the tape of me being sexually assaulted" "blah blah blah get over it" thing came up they were pretty much doomed.

i'm gonna sue you for eye injury because of how hard I just rolled them into the back of my head.

everything is political. your insistence on avoiding politics is a political statement.
