Could be wrong, but IIRC the manga showed J Geil more visibly impaled on something attached to, or actually on, that gate. Anime left this a bit cryptic

I will give Part 3 this in comparison with 2.
It actually feels like Stands have actual rules versus part 2 where it feels like the author was just making up bullshit as he went along.

It's pretty great up to Yorknew. The Greed Island OVA isn't nearly as good though.

This is pretty accurate. The first few episodes are substantially more fleshed out, there's actually a really good little mini filler arc in the middle of the Hunter Exam (seriously, it's great!), and Yorknew is significantly darker and more stylized than its 2011 counterpart. Note: not all of this necessarily means "better," but it's certainly worth watching for some of its differences and unique takes.

Also, the dub for the '99 series is straight garbage.
