Trump reportedly called Flynn at 3AM because he forgot how the dollar works

Is trump an insomniac? When the hell does he sleep? Unless he goes to bed really early he must only be getting 3-4 hours a night. That can't be healthy.

He doesn't trust or go to professionals for their opinion, the only people he trust are those that sing his praises and go out of their way to do so.

It's a limited circle when it comes to experts in policy.

The funny thing is that, on its own, it's not a crazy question. Like, how strong should the dollar be? Is it too strong? Is the optimal level something lower? All of those are things worth asking.

But trump is clearly too dumb to get the nuance and asked somebody who doesn't know enough to give him a real answer.

Is there a thread on the trump tweet about the '16 fake news stories since trump was elected' tweet?
I remember a couple of them being gaf threads and wanted to know if we've been fake news victims or if it's just more BS from the trump PR team.

sangreal broke down the 16 fake news story thing in PoliGAF:

I read that list of '16 Fake News Stories Reporters Have Run Since Trump Won' Trump tweeted out and it is full of shit, unsurprisingly

November 22: The Tri-State Election Hacking Conspiracy Theory

This is a factual report about some academics wanting a recount due to discrepancies in electronic versus non-electronic voting. The author argues that Nate Silver disagrees with the academics, but that doesn't make the report on their claims false.
December 1: The 27-Cent Foreclosure

This is a true story but Politico got some minor details wrong like the name of the bank at the time. The foreclosure proceedings still happened and they were still tied to Mnuchin

January 20: Nancy Sinatra’s Complaints about the Inaugural Ball

Nancy Sinatra made a tweet saying remember the first lines of the song ("And now, the end is near."). CNN ran an article characterizing that as "Nancy Sinatra not happy Trump using father’s song at inauguration". She then deleted the tweet and claimed she never said anytrhing, but she did. At best you can say they mis-characterized her words but that is a stretch. Regardless, this isn't fake news -- it was reporting on a real tweet

January 20: The Nonexistent Climate Change Website ‘Purge’

Author admits that the NYT article explains everything correctly but doesn't like their headline
January 20: The Great MLK Jr. Bust Controversy

This wasn't a story that was run, it was just a tweet from some reporter
January 20: Betsy DeVos, Grizzly Fighter

100% True story that the author finds "intellectually dishonest". No allegation that reporters misquoted her or made anything up. Basically, the author just agrees with her that some schools may need guns to fight grizzly bears

January 26: The ‘Resignations’ At the State Department

Again, a 100% true story but the author doesn't like the Washington Post's spin on it in their original article. I agree, but it was published as an opinion piece, in the opinion section by one of their opinion columnists. It's not news by definition

January 27: The Photoshopped Hands Affair

Not a story anyone ran, author is upset about some random tweets
January 29: The Reuters Account Hoax

The Daily Beast reported the wrong names in their story about the Quebec shooting. They got the names from a Reuters parody twitter account. Okay? Doesn't change the story or make it fake. It's just an error

January 31: The White House-SCOTUS Twitter Mistake

Not a story anyone ran, author is upset about some random tweets
January 31: The Big Travel Ban Lie

This really was a fake story, because the guy made it up. Reporters reporting on his claims did not make anything up though and ultimately exposed his lies. It's not fake news to factually report someone else's statements.

February 1: POTUS Threatens to Invade Mexico

Author puts forth no argument for why this is fake news, other than that Mexico disputes the characterization -- which was included in the original story.
February 2: Easing the Russian Sanctions

This happened exactly as it was reported. Author's only argument is that it was a minor change and that Obama would've done it too. Okay, but that doesn't make it fake news

February 2: Renaming Black History Month

Yes, this was bullshit -- but its also just a TMZ story. I'm shocked that not everything a tabloid says is true
February 2: The House of Representatives’ Gun Control Measures

Another story that is 100% true but the author thinks repealing the rule is good so apparently that makes it fake news

Michael Moore just pointed out someone who pointed out that trump was scheduled for a 10:30 national security briefing and tweeted at 10:50 about how unfair Nordstrom was being to her daughter..

It doesn't actually seem all that unusual that he wouldn't know or care about the mechanics of currency. His primary focus is real estate, he doesn't really need to worry about how currency fluctuations affect real estate. A good location will always be a good location.

Wouldn't buying and selling real estate all over the world involve timing these sales around currency fluctuations in the local markets as well as to the USD?

Chinese currency falling in value is mentioned in why the Chinese are buying so much foreign real estate for instance.

Seems like it's a huge aspect of being a world wide real estate purchaser.

But to be fair to Trump; what's good for a business isn't necessarily the same for an entire country. So he might know how currency affects real estate purchasing and still wonder whether that applies to being the leader of the USA. The call at 3AM to a non-economist is the truly odd part of the story (if true.)

I think the man is absolutely repugnant but I genuinely think he needs serious psychological help. Hes not well. America I'm fearful for your country. As an outsider looking in there is so many great things about the US. I fear they're being eroded.

Possibly. I think he asked the lieutenant general this question just because he was too intimidated to ask an economics adviser something a first year business/econ major would know.

Sometimes I think we're all just being punkd. Like, they're leaking this shit on purpose to make us underestimate him right? This shit isn't possible.

Yeah I'm wondering about a few of these. Not that it's terribly surprising, just that there's so much that isn't surprising.

I would argue that in the case of Chinese property investment, that's as much a matter of politics in China as it is currency fluctuations. That's a different sort of thing, however, with wealthy Chinese trying to get their money OUT of China and using property as bank accounts that can't easily be seized. Chinese property investment is not about profiting from real estate in and of itself, so much as moving money somewhere safe and generating some decent "interest" on the deposit through property appreciation.

Trump's goals have been very different, with casinos, hotels, golf courses, and other resort-style construction where the property itself is expected to generate profits once it goes into operation. For him, the only real concern has ever been, "Where is a good location?" and, once that location is seized, concentrating on the economics of construction and the service industry, rather than any meaningful focus on what the currency in a given country is going to do to that property.

How the fuck did this dude even run a business without knowing some of this shit?

He's running an international corporation and he doesn't know whether a strong or weak dollar is more beneficial to him.

He made about as much money as if he took his inheritance and just put it in an index fund, and let the market do the rest.

So having a bunch of cohorts running the business and just breaking even would be just enough to keep his ego up while not proving anything about his intelligence.

I remember a couple of them being gaf threads and wanted to know if we've been fake news victims or if it's just more BS from the trump PR team.

I was curious about this as well, so I took a look at the stories discussed in this post:
sangreal broke down the 16 fake news story thing in PoliGAF:
Let's see how we do.

Election hacking: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1318928
Not fake news, just a shaky story based on wishful thinking. Got a mocking thread title change an hour or two after posting.

27-cent foreclosure: No thread, but comes up in a post at the end of this one, getting no responses: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1320722

Nancy Sinatra: No thread

Climate change website purge: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1336111
Pointed out to be an overreaction to a standard thing within ten minutes, thread locked.

MLK bust removed: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1336262
Noted to be incorrect within a half hour of being posted, thread locked.

Betsy DeVos grizzlies: No thread, comes up in this thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1335110
Was an accurate story in any case. Uncharitable response, but I don't see a big problem here.

State Dept firings: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1338006
Two threads posted a minute apart were merged, the title defaulting to stay the same as the first one. Not fake news, but maybe should've used the second title for accuracy.

Photoshopped Hands: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1338411
Corrected within an hour, thread locked.

Reuters Account hoax: Don't see a thread on this, but also who cares, this is a single news site not checking sources properly.

SCOTUS twitter: No thread.

Travel Ban Lie: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1339688
Revealed that the guy lied the next day, after 1 page of discussion. Locked.

POTUS Mexican invasion: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1340047
Originally posted with an incomplete and therefore misleading thread title, which was noted by the OP and fixed an hour or two later. In any case, the presentation of the story in the thread was correct and there's no indication this story is "fake news" in any real sense.

Russia Sanctions: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1340248
Source for this thread is the Treasury department, so, uh, pretty sure this isn't fake news?

Black History Month renamed: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1340290
Corrected within ten minutes, thread locked.

Background checks: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1340361
Reasoning for the background check change posted by page two, OP updated on his own accord to include the ACLU's response.

I think on the whole we're doing pretty well. Some overreactions and exaggerations, which mostly get corrected fairly quickly. No real "fake news" here.

Maybe Trump is bipolar

While that's not really how being bipolar works, it did get me thinking. There must be hundreds of psychiatrists itching for the chance to write a thesis about this guy. Probably too political to attempt right now, but I'm fully expecting those things to show up as soon as he leaves office.

How does it work then? Some other posters are suggesting dementia but dementia doesn't present like this. I'm curious If there is any mental health screening that the president has to go through when they are elected.

Exactly. You want a successful Trump you have to look to Fred Trump. Donald inherited his dads money, properties, and estate. Trump is not a Jobs or Gates or even Zuckerberg. Hes a rich kid that got handed everything and hasnt been able to create anything lasting of worth. Even the TV show hes most famous for isnt his.. The Apprentice is a Mark Burnett show (creator of Survivor).

His only true success was Trump Tower, but after his first and only achievement, his ego (which was already enormous) and his fame went to his head.

The day someone gets real pissed and leaks his tax returns will be glorious

Holy shit, The Apprentice started in the 90s?! I thought it was later.

No, it started in early 00's. I meant that Trump was coming off through serious financial troubles in the 90's and was still dealing with it's fallout until The Apprentice was picked up by NBC.
