At last March thread :D
Because I can't read properly earlier, I'll repost my question here.

Since new thread is up, can I asked for recommendation? Recently I'm reading many information about Industrial Revolution, Meiji Restoration, and Victoria Era on the internet. But I deemed that floating information on the internet isn't enough to satiate my curiosity on the subject. So, does anyone on Gaf know which books is the best for me to read more on such subjects, Industrial Revolution, Meiji Restoration, and Victoria Era in general.

Right now reading Stonewielder, a Malazan spin-off. Looking forward to Words of Radiance and the prequel to lies of Locke Lamora - both are out in a few days. Yay

the movie is a cult classic of mine and I finally have some free time and ran into a copy so I picked it up. So far, very different from the movie but I like it.

Yea I read it only a few months back, was really surprised how different from the movie it was. Focused on completely different things. Very interesting read, albeit a very pro-military book.

RatskyWatsky

Hunky Nostradamus
Still making my way through

Some of the chapters are starting to feel repetitive (how many times are they going to have passionate mind blowing sex?!?!?!) but I'm still enjoying it. I am now obsessed with all things Scotland and I want to change my generic American accent into a Scottish one. :D

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
That new thread smell.

Like a new book.

Finished this recently as my first Orwell book. Pretty good overall and good to see a different perspective of the Spanish Civil War. The only thing bringing it down was the chapters dedicated solely to the political aspect of it.

I think I'll start this book now:

I wanted to read it, but then I kept hearing that the book was super serious without any hint of satire so I avoided it for quite a while. Read it last year and enjoyed it.

I finished

Charming as hell, though only sporadically engaging. I loved the Wyverary, and I really liked what they did with the Marquess, but I feel like it should have engaged me more than it did. I literally fell asleep several times while reading this book.

I'm reading Mother Night by Vonnegut for the book club, as well as The Claw of the Conciliator by Gene Wolfe.

Both will be put on the back burner in three days for Words of Radiance, which is my most anticipated book of the year. I've convinced my wife to read the first one.

Time to jump on the hype train, GAF!

Doctor Sleep…just started, big fan of The Shining so hopefully this is good.

I absolutely loved it, almost more than The Shining.

Finished The Divided Mind last night. I'm not sure how I feel about the multiple doctors in the book arguing that most chronic pain that people experience is due to repressed emotions. I have a hard time buying it.

Currently reading Kindness Goes Unpunished (Walt Longmire Series #3):

I'm definitely digging this series. I have a hankering for reading some sci fi, though, so I'm thinking of picking up the Vorkosigan Saga books. :)

Still reading Abercrombie's The Heroes. I'm 200 pages in. It's pretty good but I was hoping to have it done before Words of Radience came out and I don't think that's going to happen. Probably be done with it by the end of the week though if I can find some time.

Finished Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold yesterday night.
It was the last Vorkosigan book I had left to read, so I'm actually quite sad that it's over. Now I wish I had left the Ivan novel for last to cheer me up a bit. :(

Cryoburn itself was probably the weakest of the "proper" Vorkosigan novels (that is, aside Falling Free and Ethan of Athos). Reading through the whole series was a fantastic ride though, in particular the stretch between the Borders of Infinity collection and Memory (publication order-wise) was of incredible quality - she definitely deserved all those Hugos :)
I'm really tempted to re-read the series in publication order sometimes soon, but I'll probably try to finish her Chalion books first.

I'm definitely digging this series. I have a hankering for reading some sci fi, though, so I'm thinking of picking up the Vorkosigan Saga books. :)
Yay, you should go for it!! :D

Still reading this. I'm at Part IV now and wow, this book is incredible. I can already guess why Crime and Punishment is regarded as a timeless masterpiece.

After finishing Eleanor and Park a week ago, I'm torn on what I want to start reading first this month:

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson
Amy Falls Down by Jincy Willett
Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Any opinions?

Do I just started at #1? Or is there a preferred reading order? I'm looking at the Wikipedia entry for the saga now and it looks like there's a whole different internal chronological order. I'm a little overwhelmed!
Agreed, it is definitely a bit overwhelming at the beginning! I'd recommend going by the internal chronological order - or at least that's what I did and I thought it worked out great. :)

Bujold herself provided a chronological list that can be found here. That said, the very first book in chronological order, Falling Free, is a bit of a spin-off and I'd recommend leaving it for later. Shards of Honor is the best starting point, in my opinion. :)
Also, if you pick up the first four omnibus editions, they follow the chronological order and even include the various novellas, so they're great in that sense. The later omnibus volumes shuffle things around a bit and also don't include a key novel in the middle - not sure what they were doing there.

I went by this order:

-Shards of Honor (included in Cordelia's Honor)
-Barrayar (included in Cordelia's Honor)
-The Warrior's Apprentice (included in Young Miles)
-"The Mountains of Mourning" [novella] (included in Young Miles)
-The Vor Game (included in Young Miles)
-Cetaganda (included in Miles, Mystery and Mayhem)
-Ethan of Athos (included in Miles, Mystery and Mayhem) - although this is only loosely related to the main saga
-"Labyrinth" [novella] (included in Miles, Mystery and Mayhem)
-"The Borders of Infinity" [novella] (included in Miles Errant)
-Brothers in Arms (included in Miles Errant)
-Mirror Dance (included in Miles Errant)
-Memory
-Komarr (included in Miles in Love)
-A Civil Campaign (included in Miles in Love)
-"Winterfair Gifts" (included in Miles in Love)
-Falling Free (included in Miles, Mutant and Microbes) - takes place 200 years before main saga but the next book has references to it
-Diplomatic Immunity (included in Miles, Mutant and Microbes)
-Captain Vorpatril's Alliance
-CryoBurn

100 pages left, i like it, but everything feels like is building up to something, it is the first book of the saga after all.

Just finished up Gone Girl.

Thought the first half was just insanely brilliant but it pretty much ran out of gas after that. Ending was thematically consistent and interesting but still unsatisfying.

Overall I liked the book but feel a bit let down after that stunning opening.

Still plugging away on The Dragon Reborn. My one big (spoilerish) gripe:

Jordan doesn't like to write action scenes. Getting a little tired of shit starting to go down and then it's the aftermath with the next paragraph. I think this is high crimes in any adventure fantasy novel. He doesn't do this all the time, but more often than not, that's the route he's taking in this novel.

Aside from that, it's still Grade B fantasy for me. Not terrible, but not great. I find myself liking the characters (Nynaeve, Perrin) moreso than the story so far.

I'm reading Crazy Town: The Rob Ford story, though, I really should hurry up and finish The Way of Kings already. I downloaded a preview of the Rob Ford book and was immediately hooked, ended up buying it. It's well researched, but it's deeply disturbing.

So I've been plowing through the Black Company omnibuses. Finished The Books of the South (followed the advice from the last thread and read The Silver Spike first... glad I did). Next..

The Return of the Black Company:
Murgen is all right, but reading his annals has been kind of a slog. The second part is better though.

Still marching through The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton. It's pretty amazing except for all the sex, not that I mind good sex, but the one main character is a total nympho.

I had to take a breather towards the end of the first book, and I'm still sort of reeling from the length of that book, this book and the books ahead, but once I get into a rhythm I should knock this one out rather quickly. Hoping to get caught up to the show by the 4th season premiere.
