Rose dies in the middle and Alisha takes over her place. You can still have Rose post game. Also, you get Zaveid and Dezel but you have to choose who to keep. LOL. =P
I'll give you that, but I blame that on RPG mechanics more than anything. They needed a way to
keep him in your party because otherwise you wouldn't have him for, like, half of the game.
After playing through the game twice, I don't find it too unbelievable.
Milla and Rowen were the only two characters who would have the resolve to kill him outright. And Milla does outright threaten him when they're in Xian Du. But Milla seems to think she can keep an eye on him, Rowen seems to feel sorry for him, and I seriously doubt the other three could bring themselves to hurt him. Elize expresses her annoyance by callimg him a "big fat liar." Jude wants to believe that Alvin is really a good person under it all as shown in a bunch of cutscenes (Alvin did save him after all). And Leia is even less likely to hurt him than Jude because she mentions that she has a weak spot for people with sad stories.
But mostly it's the RPG mechanics. Plenty of other RPGs have been hampered by the same thing. Heck, in Xenoblade they originally meant
for a party member to betray you
, but then had to change it because they realized how that'd pose a problem for the player.
Yeah, but it was a fixed amount, 100 TP for everyone, while also working with SP which demanded tactical efficiency. TP never held you back like a Team Symphonia system did. I absolutely loved ToD2 TBH.
There is a chance it may happen. Not that big, probably, but I won't say it won't happen since there is a precedent of "holding back" a character for an expanded version.

Yeah, Xillia 2 was really good at not giving you the character you needed to make the boss fights easier.
Victor would have been quite easier with Gaius (Defender) or Alvin (Charge) in the party IMO.
Yeah, do you remember when they showed the first trailer? She was there along Sorey. Quite curious about what will happen.
Is that the game that had a Director's Cut on the PSP that never released here? Or that was the original Destiny?
Well more of a updated rerelease. ToDR never made it on PSP unfortunately. ToD2 is known as one of the hardest Tales games out there since it was actually a really unforgiving battle system. It was the first foray into other systems that wasn't TP for artes usage. The SP system was a bit similar to SO3's Fury System, but more so restrictive. But it was an oddly ambitious title too with all its systems and content even. Like having Tales style status portraits and Inomata styled portraits.
No, Tales of Destiny 2, the first PS2 Tales game. Most selling Tales game in Japan together with the original Destiny on PS1. Had a port to PSP.
There was the Destiny Remake on PS2, that one saw a Director's Cut (first a year later re-release of a console Tales game, something they keep doing since) on the same system.
Those two plus Rebirth is the glorious 2D Udo Tales trilogy.
Victor is very easy with the Might Charge skill though. And yeah, fight cutscenes and mocap were a lot better in Xillia 2, even if a bit awkward because of the models. Cutscene direction doesn't seem improved in Zestiria though.

After Destiny 2 I always thought Tales would eventually use some percentage based system. Still didn't happen.

Thanks to both of you. I've done a quick research on wikipedia and it seems neither of those 3 games made it to Europe. What a shame. The only 2D Tales I've played is Eternia and I didn't especially liked the battle system, tbh.
Going from translated interviews with Hideo Baba, the multiple betrayals thing was entirely intentional. He said something like how he wanted the player to berate Alvin for being an idiot for most of the game because he refused to realize his proper place was with the main party. Not the best execution, but considering how other Tales games have handled characters like him, I liked the change. I also just really have a thing for flawed characters who hate themselves.
One major reason that Yuri fell flat for me character-wise.
But you're not alone. I'm sure you remember how I didn't even really like Tales until I sat down with Rebirth and gave it an have honest chance, and now I just love Udo games. And Schala is similar.
Maybe they will do something like kill off Slay and have Alisha take his place as main character at the halfway point. It would be pretty different and unexpected but I highly doubt they have the guts to do something like that.
Gotta say, this turned out to be a massively better than the 15/20-sec preview of the chorus we heard. Hugely different style from all the previous tales. And that bridge! I declared I wouldn't like this song from the outset, asides from it having the very tough act of following up a Ayumi Hamasaki song, but I think I'll have to eat my words now.

then they should have fed Alvin wrong info or intercepted the doves or rapidly changed their plans or kept alvin in the dark, at least something, anything. It could have worked were it not so dull executed.
I really like Alvin too, even though he's a little too haughty and he wasn't the worst part of Xillia's cast/story, that was Gaius.
How many Team Destiny game have the West got? Destiny for the PS1 and Graces f? Hearts DS was made by them but the Vita remake was made by an outsourced team which made a more Symphonia-like battle system.
Wonder if the people doing the fantranslation (which paused it when the Hearts R was announced) will continue the project in 2016 or something, when it won't hurt its sales much.

Even if he wasn't a likeable character, people would be pissed if they were forced to learn a new moveset mid game lol. I'm sure there is a lot of people out there that only play with the main character.

Only Graces really. Hearts was more of a Team Hearts thing which was a mishmash Team Destiny/Symphonia, which went on to do Xillia. But after that, the teams are no more.

They should pull of some cheesy Zack Fair shit where you play as the protagonist for half the game up until he/she dies to protect the deuteragonist.
Afterwards we'll see a crying scene in the rain where the protagonist is embraced by the deuteragonist only to fade away into the equivalent of the lifestream.
After crying his/her heart out, the deuteragonist inherits the protagonist's skills and former weapons.
At the end of the game we see the protagonist as an apparition and we learn that he/she became a Tenzoku. Cue postgame quest where the protagonist rejoins the party as Tenzoku.
She'll appear in half the cutscenes, have quite a lot of dialog lines and you'll have her as a party member for 5 minutes but she'll never join the party.
Then the PS4 version will have her as a playable character.

Yeah, I don't post much in Tales threads because I generally started feeling like I was ruining a party (and other reasons). So I mostly look forward to the import threads, get the game out of the way, and move on.
The Udo games are the ones I adore. I replayed ToDR last summer and that game is pure-king.
I also hope the battle camera in this game is adjustable. It looks like butt right now.

Interesting, but I do agree the execution wasn't too hot. I actually thought his role in the story was vastly more intersting than Jude's was --- Alvin probably should have been the MC more than Jude (at least, it would have been much more interesting). : /
It depends whether they cut the beginning or not. Even if they don't, the chorus is really short so we will likely not see a lot of action animation. I'm not really interested in the slower verse parts where we see characters standing still
Edit : most of the Tales OP are well over 2 minutes.

The song is kind of interesting. It doesn't "feel" like a Tales song but it's nice to change things every once in a while.
Xillia 2 song was good. Better than Xillia original IMO. I liked Vesperia but it was a bit cheesy. Graces was too cheesy. Abyss was OK. But Xillia 2 song was remixed into this awesome boss battle theme. I like it much more than the song with vocals.
Mine probably won't be shipped until tomorrow, but then again I'll have to wait 2 more weeks before it shows up at my door.
If I get it before someone else who also got the Lalabit Market Special Edition, I'll post some photos in the Import thread, showing the box and contents.
