Xenoblade Chronicles X Direct - Battle on March 6th [up: video with subtitles]

That they have, but an open world RPG is a rather different beast in terms of download size and player restriction. How many open world games have had demos, anyone know? I can think of the upcoming FFXV and that's me out.

That is all I can think of as well. I don't think a demo would work that well for this game without severely limiting the biggest draws of the the game such as the environment.

Yay! My first post!

Anyway, I must say I'm getting more an more exciting for this game. Although I loved the first Xenoblade, I may say I was somewhat disappointed with the character designs and especially the music in X. However, there is no longer any disappointment aside from the fact that there are no high entia (yet XD).

The environments look fantastic. They have the same magic wonder of the first xenoblade's environments plus an additional scifi touch. The creatures also have that same touch while fitting in well with the environments. Monolift Soft's environment and creature designers are truly top notch.

I've enjoyed the glimpses at the class and battle system. It seems like an improvement over the first game.

The ending of that direct. I'm swooning at this game right now XD

Welcome!

Not that I don't appreciate his effort or anything but I think iYakku's video is a little more well done. It's nice that we have people like this to translate for us though. The fact that they're willing to put in the time so that others won't have to worry about the language barrier is really something.

Ah, I didn't realize we had two different sub videos the first time (Gessenkou/iYakku and then this guy doing his own thing).

Ideally they could work together.

Gessenkou's pretty thorough and accurate, and he's a native english speaker so he puts things in terms that make it more understandable, while still trying to bring out the character of the conversations. iYakku is a native japanese speaker, and he goes over the translations, and then there are others providing a little bit of input and feedback as well. They're very well done. I watched the other guys' first video, and it seemed a bit less accurate and more literal to me. The complete video will be much more in depth as well, since we'll have all the text and menus fully translated.

I pointed out in my first post that I knew little about the game which is why I asked. I was hoping it was going to be action-oriented similar to playing a ranger in Dragons Dogma - I prefer to be in control of where I am aiming.
Thanks for the answers.

I definitely think it's still a game you can enjoy. The battle system is only part of the draw. In addition to that there's the world exploration, story, and many other little things like the mechs, music, etc. It's really a game they're going all out in every aspect of, and it has broad appeal for a variety of things. Maybe the battle system isn't what you'd like exactly, but I think you'd still find it tolerable at least, and the other aspects of the game will be enjoyable that it'll be worth it. At least give the game a try and a little bit of attention :) Can't hurt.

Demos take time away from the main game to make.

FFXV needed a demo to show good faith for a 10 year in development game that has one more year before release

Looks like an early subbed version is up. It says the narration and main titles are subbed, and they'll be another more detailed sub later on.

Edit: Wow, for an 'early' sub this is surprisingly detailed, can't wait to see the full one.

Wow, thanks for the link. I wonder why NOA doesn't sub these officially? They know the game is generating a lot of hype. Unless they plan to do English versions of these with the English VAs.

Still can't get over the fact that the alien lady is wearing a thong and garter belt.

Because the Western promo hasn't started yet since we have no date yet. The game has a fixed date for Japan and is very close to release which is why they're getting this there now. It would be a waste to do these for the WW audience now. You want to hype people up closer to release, not half a year before and then have nothing for the pre-launch period. It makes complete sense. Plus you get everyone super hyped for it watching anyway and doing crazy translations, community engagement, discussion. Wins all around.

Goddamn, the sheer scale of this game is inmense. Just the battle system seems much more expansive than the original Xenoblade one, and we haven't seen anything about the Dolls yet.

The other aspects are looking pretty good too. Those vistas and enemy designs are glorious. I hope Nintendo is not spoiling anything after the beginning of the game, I loved the surprises I got last time and a Skyward Sword-like info deluge would be bad form. Also, I'm pretty accostumed to Sawano style of music, so vocal voices are not a surprise at all. I just hope he didn't went overboard with them and put them in every single piece of the soundtrack.

Come on NOA, I need a date. Even a release window would do.

I see why everyone is complaining about the music. I like Sawano's work on Attack on Titan, but in this game, the lyrics ruins the otherwise excellent music. I love the battle theme until the lyrics started playing. Goddammit!

Yeah. I watched the newest video and I assume they picked the same music they used in the last video. But damn, I hate to be "that guy", yet I cannot help but be immensely disappointed at what I am hearing here.

First off, every time a new music track started I kept wondering, "Is this finally going to be a non-vocal track?", yet sure as I kept thinking that, it never came. Each track eventually was filled with lyrics. What is even more infuriating for me is that I usually love vocal tracks, particularly choir vocals, like in Xenoblade. But nope, in all the music sampled so far that I've heard, the lyrics are terrible JPop garbage likely roughly translated into Engrish. I guess anime-fans will eat it up, but damn it is annoying.

Yeah yeah I get this was the director's choice because he's a huge Sawano fan and wanted that type of music for this game. If these tracks had no vocals than they'd be ok, which is what is so frustrating, and it's just such a downgrade from the original Xenoblade soundtrack in that regard.

This is going to make localization interesting for NOA though. The lyrics are Engrish. Do they keep it to preserve the original feel, or would they have to remove or even re-write them for localization? I don't mind the overly bombastic fake Latin (or whatever it is) for those big bombastic track, it's the horrible Engrish/Jpop that gets on my nerves.

Yeah what im loving about this ironically is the community engagement from this, and this mostly stems from how much the community really loves xenoblade.

I dunno, I kinda like the vocal tracks. And they're kinda getting stuck in my head now since I'm watching the videos so often lol.

I feel like the majority of the vocal heavy tracks will be played in areas of NLA or during cutscenes though. I think that the music while exploring won't focus on them. I see you said you like choir vocals so I wonder if this track from the website will suit your fancy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Az6tfEbQJWk

The battle system seems to be improved a lot. I cant wait to try out different class/character/armor/arts combinations. The possibilities are endless. I kind of liked the future seeing aspect of Monado, though, I hope it returns in some form, but there is no mention of it at all so I'm guessing that's out.

Yeah, I think you make a good point here. One of the songs, the African native-like music played in a previous video presentation, sounds appropriately adventurous with its foreign and rhythmic composition like it fits in with the atmosphere of exploring environments such as the Primordial Wilderness, the area outside of NLA. It feels like that kind of music is well suited to compelling the player to explore a region that's both beautiful and dangerous.

Overclock Gear reminds me of the Limit breaks in Final Fantasy 8 (You can activate it when the group is low on health)
Why do I have the feeling that pro players are going to reach insane combos with this mode and find exploits in the game....

Surprised by the amount of characters you can have join your party. These are just human characters. I wouldn't be surprised if this extended to the alien allies you make in the game.

Expected the the equipment system would be similar to the first game but glad to have some confirmation. Does anyone have stills of the different outfits they start showing at the 20:33 mark. Especially the Elma one at the 20:34 mark. Love that outfit. Reminds me of female armor in Tera Online. Not the most modest but this is a game where you can drop everyone down to their underwear. I do hope there is a male version of something like that just to make it equal.

I find the system where the more you wear armor from one in-game company the types of equipment they will release to be really nice. Reminds me of how in Final Fantasy XIII where different vendors/stores were presented as different companies. This seems even more expansive.

Limit breaks were the first thing that came to mind when I saw the Overclock Gear section as well. Similar to the Chain Attacks as well but more individual based.

I know this wasn't in the recent direct,, but does anyone else think the map layout is... Well overly segmented? I don't like the layout, it's seems like there is too much negative space. Are those areas on the sides unlockable or is it just a weird map?

Not really sure how I feel about recruiting so many people into the party. It likely implies that only the 3 main characters will be a major part of the story and the other people you bring in will either not be used much in cutscenes or have minor roles (reminds me of something like Chrono Cross which is one aspect I disliked about that game in comparison to Trigger). I think I would have preferred it be like Xenoblade and the cast be set at 6-7 and each one be important to the plot in some way. But then again, as long as the story is interesting, it'll be fine.

This, along with the Class system, are probably the only negatives that I had while watching the trailer.

The game looks amazing, but there are some suggestions that we won't have a 'core' party so much as a guest party box, similar to how Xenosaga Ep III handled some of its temporary party members.

I would love to be proven wrong, though. I'm really hyped to see how this game does when it releases... hopefully we'll be able to read some glowing impressions from GAFfers.

Im pretty sure that was just in-universe type thing they did for the direct, the people wouldnt be in cutscnes if they were optional party members that you can miss, Im pretty sure all except maybe the last 3 shown are part of the main group, ru for instance was shown in the last E3 trailer and is featured in the promo/concept art with lyn and elma.

Fill the black of the map with blue for water. Looks like the planet is mostly water with a land mass in the center, I guess kind of like Pangaea. I think it's the black that just looks off, implying that something is missing.

To people who enjoyed Xenoblade's combat system, undoubtedly. To you, possibly not. By all accounts and from what we've seen they're building on Xenoblade's foundations, making it more in-depth and layered.

On the other hand, you played an hour of the first Xenoblade. I'm not sure we can say you've actually experienced Xenoblade's combat system - new mechanics are still being introduced waaaay beyond that. It's kind of like disliking Final Fantasy's combat when all you've done is select 'Attack'.

Thats kinda what I was thinking. I just need to go back and give it another shot. Ive just been spoiled lately with Dark Souls and MH4U styled combat and going back to anything else feels boring. I just need to get over it and get in that Xenoblade.

I almost feel bad for ppl who will pass up this game for stupid distates. I'm a gamer so I like to try out all kinds of new things and break out my comfort zone then to just play the same stuff. Oh to each his own

To be fair, it's a bit harsh to call a distaste 'stupid'. It's a very legitimate reason not to like the game as the battle system is on the more passive side of the spectrum. But having said that...

Excellent use of the avatar quote. Hopefully there is a demo - if there is and if I still have my wii u at that time I will check it out

... you really should give the game a try. People keep mentioning MMO in here, but even though I have a strong dislike for 'MMO-style' battles, Xenoblade's battle system felt very engaging and immediate.

I see why everyone is complaining about the music. I like Sawano's work on Attack on Titan, but in this game, the lyrics ruins the otherwise excellent music. I love the battle theme until the lyrics started playing. Goddammit!

Here, check out these great non-lyric tracks from the game:

Just rewatched the subbed environments presentation. That one also had a snippet of the scene with Marcus and Irina looking at this gigantic life pod, the one from the cutscene with the alien robots at the end of this one. I'm starting to think that this is the story point that will introduce and open dolls up to us in the story after having been introduced to the early goings on foot, running around and stuff, finding smaller life pods, meeting various characters.

So hype. And I'm totally in love with the silly back and forth between Tatsu and Lyn lol.

Watching footage. Everything's so high tech, but then you get to the shopping and residential areas where everything looks like it's out of 1990.

Is this the Ru artwork you're talking about?

Because this, along with the other pieces of art, sounds like it had specific orders attached to them, as it says the artist was asked to specifically include Ru, a character that she designed.

It would just be refreshing to see the type of armor correlate with a character's properties. For instance, i have no problem with a bikini being one of the outfits, but i think it should offer little to no defense, but instead increase diversion (dodge).

Great video. I like that they're introducing the doublecasting and triplecasting dynamics, as I felt like the first Xenoblade didn't have enough safeguards against just spamming Arts in a repetitive cycle.

When they started talking about the concept of re-classing, I almost fell out of my chair due to the levels of systems that game is going to have. The first game was kind of teetering toward the brink of over-complication sometimes with its menus, so I was amazed that they're adding another level. I don't think it's going to be that overly-complicated, however. I like the idea of letting you custom-tailor each character a little more and give them different looks in battle.

Are these classes going to be generic for everyone, or are they all going to be character-specific? The preview suggested there would be a lot more playable characters than in the first game, so maybe it's going to be more like the job system in Final Fantasy V? If they're all unique, then they're probably not going to have as many playable characters as the video makes it look.

(Unless they're crazy and did spend forever making hundreds of arts trees and character models. I wouldn't put it past these devs.)

Just finished watching the video, and I didn't think I could be any more hyped for this game, but I am! The battle system seems mostly the same to Xenoblade, which is fine by me. Looks like there are tons more combos little things to optimize damage output and help you win a fight, which is fantastic. And the monsters you fight are so diverse and unique, as is the armor and equipment you don on. And being able to bring pretty much anyone with you into combat will certainly add a lot of variety. I am SO excited for this! It's my most anticipated game, and will probably be my GOTG. FF15 will have to be amazing to top this.

Oh, and The Life has a nice hometown.

That kind of did that with Dunban's Skills. Not giving him equipment gives him more evasion.

Just kind of makes me think that the continents are starting to move away from one another. Had they arrived on the planet several thousand years earlier it could have looked like a supercontinent. iYakku's original translation for Grasslands was Primordial Wilderness and seeing how there are alien dinosaurs and creatures that remind me of prehistoric mammals and insects, I can kind of see that.

There still could be unexplored areas though, we just don't know. My imagination has really run wild with this game.
