Xenoblade Chronicles X Direct - Battle on March 6th [up: video with subtitles]

Dumb question, but I know little about this game/series: Do you aim with the right analog stick like a 3rd person shooter (yes I know its not a shooter) or do you target/attack the enemy with the face buttons ? I kept seeing what looked like button prompts on the enemies.

There is no aiming. It locks on. You can switch between enemies. Think MMO (World of Warcraft).

Thats what I was afraid of. Well its probably not for me than.

I don't understand, how is the aiming part a deciding factor? It's clearly not an action game but you're constantly moving around, doing stuff. You don't just stand there flipping through menus spamming the same attack or whatever. The MMO comparison was meant to highlight how the base combat interaction is setup.

Not that different than people wanting Xenoblade on Wii to have a normal attack button, which would have made the game more tedious if anything.

Sweet jesus, can you imagine trying to use Seven with manual attack, you'd have carpal tunnel syndrome inside a minute.

I pointed out in my first post that I knew little about the game which is why I asked. I was hoping it was going to be action-oriented similar to playing a ranger in Dragons Dogma - I prefer to be in control of where I am aiming.
Thanks for the answers.

watching the video with English subs was sooo much better. I am more excited than ever.

So equipment and weapons essentially get experience. The more you use specific types, the better equipment that becomes available. Interesting.

So far battle seems a lot like Xenoblade but there are some differences obviously, like soul voice. Didn't seem like there are party chain attacks either unless that comes late in the game.

Yeah this game probably isn't for you then, it's got guns but it doesn't have any shooter aspects, it's all rpg.

So during the OverClock Gear part, Vandamme said that if you follow up ranged(melee) attacks with ranged(melee) attacks, the combo counter will increase. The battle between 14:35~14:55, the protagonist's combo is ranged→ranged→ranged→debuff→melee→melee. The combo counter increased with every arts used except the third one since it missed. So I think debuff arts can act as a wild card like talent arts in Xenoblade, maybe support and aura arts, too?

The newly translated video implies that you'll be able to recruit any NLA citizen into your party. Hope that holds true!

I almost feel bad for ppl who will pass up this game for stupid distates. I'm a gamer so I like to try out all kinds of new things and break out my comfort zone then to just play the same stuff. Oh to each his own

Finally we see a cool villain! And they waited this long to show off some of the game's nice armor designs? I am all about that crazy alien Kamen Rider stuff and the monster hunter getups. So many concerns I was having for this game alleviated at once.

Maybe already talked about, but Tatsu isn't a member of your party who battles? :( NOOOOOO! I NEED A HEROPON TO CONTROL! :(

I may be miataken but I could have sworn I saw him im the party at one part in the previous video, don't trust his claims about not being a fighter. If they showed off how you can recruit a bunch of randoms from NLA in your party, you can bet nearly every named character will be recuitable at some point.

Odd how many similarities to Fantasy Life this has, does Monolith work at all with Level-5 or Brownie Brown? Or is this just the MMO-esque jRPG genre now?

Hah, I was thinking the same thing a while back - the factions, the home base/town, the mix of side and story-progressing quests, the online multiplayer questing, it felt to me like Fantasy Life: Ruddy Great Mechs Edition. I don't have any MMO experience though so it could be a fairly standard set-up.

Incidentally, I'll be entirely satisfied if it turns out to be Fantasy Life: Ruddy Great Mechs Edition. Though I imagine the story will be approximately a billion times more involved.

If I remember correctly, at some point Tatsu said in this very video he was leaving the fighting to the humans and would help in other ways. Or something to that effect. Seems all but a confirmation to me.

Somebody theorized that it probably has to do with armor swaps. With humanoids only, any armor or weapons can be used on any character and they wouldn't have to make special equipment for a nopon.

I really only played about an hour (if that) of the first Xenoblade and the combat just did not hook me at all, so my opinion is probably wrong.. but I wanted it to be more of a brawler style of combat rather than what it was.

Does this game change anything to make the combat more engaging?

I would recommend watching the subbed video. The combinations and gear system seems particularly interesting and different than Xenoblade's approach to battle. You can even store up power and do double or even triple art attacks. It really seems like the player will have to be actively engaged in battle with button prompts this time around with soul voice and the like.

At its heart though it is still similar to MMO combat with auto attacks and arts with cooldowns.

Not really sure how I feel about recruiting so many people into the party. It likely implies that only the 3 main characters will be a major part of the story and the other people you bring in will either not be used much in cutscenes or have minor roles (reminds me of something like Chrono Cross which is one aspect I disliked about that game in comparison to Trigger). I think I would have preferred it be like Xenoblade and the cast be set at 6-7 and each one be important to the plot in some way. But then again, as long as the story is interesting, it'll be fine.

Well, we saw several of the other characters having roles in cutscenes near the end of the video, so i don't think there's necessarily a concern there, at least for the characters who have gotten a proper introduction on the website and everything. Maybe for those other three characters we saw fighting but didn't really get an intro to that might be true for, but it seems too early to really be drawing conclusions either way.

Those same people will create threads like "I think I'm done with gaming, because gaming has gotten stale"

Maybe it will be more like FF Tactics than Chrono Cross. Haven't seen the XCX vid yet and I don't recall exactly how FFT's party recruitment went, but I remover you could have a huge number of people in your party.

I guess I enjoyed the "huge party" aspect more in tactics because each minor character was a custom built one from the job system

The auto-attack discussion just remind me why I can't get into the new Dragon Age.
Keep pressing ZR to normal attack is horrible

"スパイクダメージ" = "spike damage"

If it was planned from the start they'll at least have a lot more time to polish the mechanic. I want to say spike damage was added close to the end of the first game's development so with more time to tweak the mechanic it'll hopefully work a bit better.

To people who enjoyed Xenoblade's combat system, undoubtedly. To you, possibly not. By all accounts and from what we've seen they're building on Xenoblade's foundations, making it more in-depth and layered.

On the other hand, you played an hour of the first Xenoblade. I'm not sure we can say you've actually experienced Xenoblade's combat system - new mechanics are still being introduced waaaay beyond that. It's kind of like disliking Final Fantasy's combat when all you've done is select 'Attack'.

Spike damage isn't all that bad. Just got to have the spike "gems" or the equivalent here, equipped. There will probably be an ability that negates the damage like in the first game as well.

It really only annoyed me the first time I played and I didn't understand why enemies were beating me so easily. Once I figured out it was because of spike damage and knew how to negate it, it was no problem. Hopefully they clearly label enemies that cause spike damage this time, like they label the enemies that attack when hearing sound, etc.

Yeah, I don't mind the concept. I just wish there was an easier way to tell which enemies have which types of spikes. It would be annoying to get a topple on a sub-boss only for all of your party members to suddenly lose half their HP without any warning.

So after the translation about how we can find residents of NLA to help us, Are we still gonna have people griping about how they should be in cramped armored barracks when stuck on a distant planet and have no accommodations or luxuries to speak of?

Oh, so spike damage is in the game.

If I remember correctly, during my second playthrough of Xenoblade 1, the first monster you can fight against is an owl enemy with spike damage in Makna Forest. I underestimated it and he beat my party because I didn't know what kind of spike damage he was initially inflicting on me.

I think some strongest unique monsters with spike effects I fought against were the giant spider boss deep inside Tephra Cave on Colony 9 and a giant mechon on Fallen Arm's beach with a laser beam attack which killed my party in one hit. He was the last unique monster I tried to beat before I finished the game. There was also this lizard warrior that causes a sleep status effect on your party on Kromar Coast at Eryth Sea. He wasn't among the strongest but he took me a few turns to try to kill.

Yay! My first post!

Anyway, I must say I'm getting more an more exciting for this game. Although I loved the first Xenoblade, I may say I was somewhat disappointed with the character designs and especially the music in X. However, there is no longer any disappointment aside from the fact that there are no high entia (yet XD).

The environments look fantastic. They have the same magic wonder of the first xenoblade's environments plus an additional scifi touch. The creatures also have that same touch while fitting in well with the environments. Monolift Soft's environment and creature designers are truly top notch.

I've enjoyed the glimpses at the class and battle system. It seems like an improvement over the first game.

The ending of that direct. I'm swooning at this game right now XD

Excellent use of the avatar quote. Hopefully there is a demo - if there is and if I still have my wii u at that time I will check it out

It's safe to say tehre won't be a demo. Can't you tell from the video, though? Or watch the combat videos again?

Or try watching battle videos from Xenoblade (the previous game). Like form this guy, who does a lot of insane NG+ battle videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdoGybfwyTM). Note however that battles in XenobladeX are faster paced this time and don't have the "vision" mechanic you see in that video, for example.

I really hope then that there is an advanced class with a max level of 99 like in Xenoblade. I hate level caps.

Considering we've seen monsters level 80+ already (remember the rock throw), I don't think they're expecting a level 20 to go up against it. I wouldn't be worried.

edit: I didn't realize class levels are separate. My mistake.

Class Level (what the poster you quoted is referring to) is different from Inner Levels (which is what you're referring to). We saw Inner Levels above 20.

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the possibility of a demo. Nintendo has been very demo-happy lately. Even Codename: Steam got a demo, and it's not exactly a flagship 3DS game.

That they have, but an open world RPG is a rather different beast in terms of download size and player restriction. How many open world games have had demos, anyone know? I can think of the upcoming FFXV and that's me out.
