i think you are massively underrating the popularity of this contest.

in 2010, 15 million germans watched this, it's hovering around 8-9 million these days.
Switzerland was 700k
Britain was 9 million last year.
Austria was 1.7 million.
Spain was 5 million.
Nordic countries are super into it, that should be clear.

what western country are you talking about?

a couple of gays and polish truckers ain't swaying shit.

Don't try to reason. Some people think emigrants from 37 million country count in billions and they all give a shit about televoting on a song contest. One guy just said ISIS would be in World Cup winners countries if done by voting, yes that ISIS. People are just bad in trying to hide racism.

Someone there has no sense of black humor whatsoever, it seems.

Seriously though, they should cut the jury votes next time. Would make this a lot more fun and fair.
This is like the definition of short term memory. We've been there, it was awful. If you think the political voting is bad now, you should refresh yourself on how bad it really was back then. The juror system was brought in to reduce the madness, and it did have an affect.

Noooooo! I can't believe Australia lost to Ukraine. I would have been alright if we lost to a good act like Russia or Hungary or France but Ukraine!?
I was on the edge of my seat for the whole voting though. That audience bit at the end was a real nail biter. Suddenly points of 100+ were being pushed around. Scary stuff

Another reason why it feels so good to win. This is an instagram photo from this morning from one of the journalists who is following Ukraine team. Apparently Russians took over the makeup room which Jamala was using for last week. Crimea jokes just write themselves...

Don't try to hide your shitty nature by "joke trick" now.

Ehh, seriously, now. ISIS obviously wouldn't be allowed to participate in World Cup or anything like that because, for example, virtually no state recognizes it - voting wouldn't make Moon or Transnistria win this contest either. If you thought that was 100% straightforward post, then you seriously didn't think this through.

You really want to backpedal out of this?

Let's be honest here, these were all emigrants voting for "their" team. Imagine if [soccer] World Cup results were decided by vote with similar "self-voting prevention" clause... that would be hilarious. The knockout participants would be Poland/Israel/Vietnam/Russia/ISIS/China/etc. No matter what.

I did not watch this year's show so I refuse to comment on the songs. The one time I tried I was not a target audience of any of them.

Wait, not only you think emigrants from Poland would beat votes coming from whole fucking world you also think terrorists and terrorist sympathizers would outnumber votes coming across from the world. Wow. Someone clap for me.

You really think no one would notice this racist rant about emigrants and you going so far as to put terrorist organization among them like an equal none the less. You think people wont notice what you did there? What you had in mind?

Tell me how hard was for you not to write: "jews/chinks/ruskies etc." and "terrorists" "...would win world cup vote"?

Pretty fucking hard I'm guessing.

When Canada joins the the European Broadcasting Union and 3 million Canadians watch the contest. That's what the Australians actually did.

Its more sony music have the Australian franchise license then anything, Mauboy, Guy and now Dami Im.
Its cheesy and sad that Australia eurovision is run by a music label.

Australia still is only an associate member of the EBU since they're not in the European broadcasting area - many other countries are, including Canada.

However, Eurovision is quite big in Australia, which is why they were chosen to participate as a guest in last year's contest, and to provide the interval act in 2014. Apparently the EBU and SBS considered the participation a big success, so Australia got to participate again (though this time they had to qualify in a semi first).
And given the high quality they've been delivering so far, I have absolutely no objections if Australia became a permanent participant.

The EBU has also been considering broadening the Eurovision participant list to include other associate members, but in order to participate, a country's broadcasting company will first have to televise the entire event of a year before being allowed to participate in the next year. I'm not sure if the US's Logo TV is an associate member of EBU, but I know China's CCTV was broadcasting, so technically, if EBU and CCTV agreed upon it, China might debut next year.

Look, pal, I specifically included ISIS amongst what I perceive to be stereotypes of diaspora nations to make the whole thing more obvious of a joke, since the whole idea of a "state" built around religious radicalism and supremacy being even interested in a soccer tournament of all things is ludicrous in my opinion. No need to go crazy about your initial misunderstanding of this since this happens all the time (see Poe's Law on TVTropes for loads of examples), but stop crying of racist agenda where there isn't any.

There's a report option if you find your takes on my posts so unarbitrary.

What? Australia was in this year too? When do we get Canada?

The thing is the Australian broadcaster SBS (Special Broadcasting Service or Sex Before Soccer) is an associate (same as CBC) but it also buys 2/3 of its programming from non-english broadcasters in the EBU. We know who Derrick and Inspector Rex is. We watched The Bridge in Danish and Swedish. We get news broadcasts from 20+ different EBU members every weekday.
SBS has been showing the ESC for over 30 years. Australians have been having ESC parties this morning (from 5am) and more will have them tonight to watch the replay. That's a tradition going back to the 80's.

Should we be there? Maybe not.
But we're not there for no reason at all.

I wonder who'd get less votes

Germany
Or the USA

I figure they're both pretty hated

Germany tends to do well if their song is good, just like everybody else tends to do well if their song is good. They even won a few years back, believe it or not.
The thing is, however, that Germany doesn't have to go through the semi process. I think they'd try harder if they didn't have a guaranteed spot in the finals. And if they qualified for the finals, they definitely would do better, since someone had to vote for them.

The lowest placing semi-finalist was the Czech Republic who ended up with 41 points despite the fact they got 0 from televoting.

But since Germoney is waving that cash at the EBU (and I guarantee that it was Germany who initiated the Big 5 rule in the first place...), they can send whatever shite and consistently end up in the low end of the scoreboard.

The same goes for the UK, by the way, and to a lesser extent France. At the very least Spain and Italy try, and France realized that "hey, good songs tend to do well!" as well and has been fairly consistently sending solid stuff in the past 7 or so years.

The thing that I am interested in, on the other hand, is A) how would US vote with their rather weak connections to most of participants, and B) would there be huge meltdowns when their vote would count as much as every other participant's.

B) would there be huge meltdowns when their vote would count as much as every other participant's.

If San Marino's vote counts as much as any other participant's - a country with a population of about 30,000 - I doubt people would be angry at the US's vote counting as much as well.

Everyone knows ISIS is not a country. This won't spin your post into a joke because there isn't one. You were very specific about emigrants voting for "their teams" in direct comparison to eurovision then you just blew it out of shitwater by expanding to WorldCup shit and ISIS.

Hey I can understand if someone had a brain fart and shitposted on it. It happens. There's word/s equivalent to: "I'm sorry." in every language in that case. I just don't buy: "I was joking, you didn't understand." bullshit. If something smells, it smells, and your earlier post sadly did.

Didn't report for 9 years and I won't start now.

Actually, if I got it right, this year San Marino got half the vote, since their telephone voting is blocked due to interference with Italy, but the new system forces the second half of vote to be through televoting and thus "second half of San Marino's vote" was calculated based on other areas' televoting.

Technicalities aside, that wasn't the point I was trying to make. I could say the same about Malta or back when they participated, Monaco, Luxembourg and Andorra.
There's a few tiny countries whose votes weigh as much as Germany's or France's. It's how Eurovision works. Nobody would be yelling about the US having that same right.
They only would yell if they'd start reigning in with the block voting and start exchanging 12 points with the UK every year. And generally if the US participates cause "omg US isn't yuurop, wtf" etc.

Sure, correct. I am just not sure how would US handle this, exactly, if the thing took off but US was stuck with one vote.

I really don't think we American fans would mind too much :)

It's all academic anyway, the EBU wouldn't dare let the US compete any time soon. Wayyyyyyyy too many political/logistical issues at play

Ukraine's performance was awful. Truly terrible singing and I think people should really keep the politics out of the songs. You're supposed to keep the veneer of love and international unity in the performances and then be biased af in the voting.

Australia was robbed. Russia's performance was very well executed but losses big points for copying last year's winner.

Ironically, in tele-voting Ukraine gave 12 points to Russia and Russia gave 10 points to Ukraine.

No wonder, televoting is still power horse for minorities and immigrants, just check Poland, 200+ points just on televoting and whooping 7 points from juries. If we still had Turkey in this, they would probably get 450+ points from televoting :)

Also I wonder how did they calculated this sum points from televotes. Is there any official formula published?

Semi final results are also published and we got phenomenal 57 (8 from televoting, only Swiss girl was behind) points and ended 14th on semifinal 2. Oh boy, media will like this :)

I was talking fandom, not viewers. I've been watching ESC for thirty years, not voted once. It takes a special kind to spend money on it. Diaspora voting has been evident sooo many times.

Surprised by the Britain viewers, they're always super down on it.

The televotes are done the exact same way as the jury votes, there's no formula.

Stop digging, it was very clearly a joke. If you don't like snark, don't go into an ESC thread.

It's had a resurgence in popularity here in the uk recently

Anyone still thinking about block voting when the first place went to a country not in the EU and second place to a country not in Europe.

Why some people still can't get the appeal of Ukraine I have no idea. Australia was dull. Much better contest than last year thankfully.

Why does that matter? Still part of the old USSR sphere of influence.

I think the EBU has some decision making to do. For the second time the public's favourite (last year Italy, this year Russia) didn't win. This time around Ukraine didn't win either the jury nor the public vote, and yet she won the whole thing (again, I'm glad she won, she was my favourite entry).

But this begs the question if people are bound to lose interest in this if they feel like their favourite can't win, no matter how many times they vote. Just look at Poland, without the juries it would've been Top 5.

I think the juries are a good idea, to balance things out. Otherwise the most brain dead generic party pop songs would win year after year. But I'm not so sure that we need to give them so much attention and power. Maybe 40/60 or 30/70 with the public vote being the bigger part would be better. I don't know. There's no easy answer for this.

Regarding Germany: It's our own fault. The national final was terrible. If they really want to win this thing they should copy the Swedish system. Just stop complaining. "But she was so great" yadayadayada, shut up. It's as if you've never seen a Eurovision contest in your life before.

The system is the same. They just changed how the votes are announced.

It's not quite the same, because there are more scores going out in total; from a given country's scores, a performance that was just out of the points in the old system may get some points in the new.

Great, another forgetable song won because of reasons...

Eh, it's just a reflection of how bad the entries for Eurovision were this year. Extremely forgettable, so IMO it's not really worth getting too worked up over who won.

Only thing that saved Eurovision this year was Mans, Petra, and the great Swedish presentation.

The awkward issue is that, strictly speaking, it's literally a *song* contest. It's meant to be the song being judged, not the performance. The intent is that the expert juries are meant to focus on the song itself because the televote may get influenced by the performance on the night.

In practice, of course, the influence of that is impossible to judge, but I daresay Sweden last year and Russia this year were heavily favoured by having staging far superior to many other. I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw more projection-based stuff next year.
