This is my third play through on a 3rd platform

Yup still fucking great

This is my third tour of duty (2- playthroughs on PS3).. Also spent well over 96 hours with VC2.

It's been long enough that everything feels fresh. I'm definitely going to sink 100+ hours into this one.

Is there any real point in investing money into the journalist lady?

Yes, if you like story, specifically squad member origin stories... other special unlocks as well.. She's worth it.

Sees not even an insert.
Places ps3 manual into steelbook.
Fuck this no manual digital paper BS
I used to love reading them in the bathroom. And the way they had the new car smell on them. Love when I can get my hands on some random Japanese game that still comes with one.

You unlock special missions (5 Reports) and extra fun cutscenes. I recommend doing this near the end of the game when you have cash flush.

Looks like these D-tier general funds are going straight into R&D then

Either. That shit that make your soul burn slow, or not.

Sen no Kiseki has a 30+ pages thick manual, which is a nice surprise. I expect Sen 2 to do the same.

That
beach chapter goes exactly as I have envisioned. (including the type of bathing suit that Isara wears)

before my shows came on tonight. Yup, its Valkyria. I know my eyesight is really bad now but I can't really tell any improvements, I think that speaks more about how beautiful this game was to begin with. I'm so giddy, now I can wake up in the middle of the night and play this on my vita in my bed if I want to.

Is moving tanks still expensive as hell?

You expect a change to a deeply ingrained core mechanic that is part of the balance of the game (and not a part of the problems with balance)? Then again, two CP has never been "expensive as hell."

OT: There is something fucky in the way the characters hidden potentials are being unlocked. I can't put my finger on it quite yet, but something is broken, somehow. Edit: Hmm, maybe not. I guess my memory is just rusty on how that stuff works.

The cutscenes aren't improved, but the models used in the battles and the talking head scenes are clearly improved from the PS3 version. Image quality, animation smoothness and such are far superior.

How is the anime for it anyhow? It has a decentrating on MAL and I'll definitely be interested in watching it once I'm done with the game.

6 or 7 out of 10 personally. They definitely changed certain things arguably for the worse as already stated, like a ham fisted love triangle, some plot holes and some unneccesary character deviation, but if your in it to see the general events and scenario play out with more time dedicated to the minor characters development, and in a far more cinematic context, i fully recommend a watch, atleast to compare and contrast the game and anime.

Personally i thought it also did certain things better than the game as well, especially regarding certain plot developments that were not handled with much finesse in the game. It was a decent watch that i had a lot of affection for because of the charm factor

My copy arrived today :D

Really forward to playing this again. I have a PS3 copy but I've not played it in years as I never got around to finishing it due to the difficulty. Definitely going to rectify that and actually beat it.

The PC version takes up 25 GB according to Steam. The PS4 version takes up 30 GB.
However, the PS4 version installs the game from disc in less than 1 minute, it is ready to play right after, instead of having to download 30 GB (I bought the physical disc version). This is useful because I would probably want to delete it off the drive when I need hard drive space and have the option to re-install it quickly if I want to.

PS4 version 1080p 60 FPS (click the cog wheel to switch to 1080p 60 FPS if it is not there by default)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0JwXCezuQY

PS3 version 720p native resolution 30 FPS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQQjhxlMa9g[

I bought the PS4 version because it also has trophies which was a missing feature from the PS3 version.

I never got around to playing through the PS3 version because trophies were never added to that version.

Valkyria Chronicles on PS3 released before trophies were implemented to Playstation games.

Watching these videos, there's something wrong with the Gallian recoil animations at 60fps. I don't recall them twitching so heavily when getting shot. Maybe my memory is getting fuzzy?

It would be amusing if, when porting from PS3 to PS4, they missed visual bugs that had been fixed by the European PC port team.

Heh, I also just noticed, that if the town watchman dies before reaching the first phase of that map, the tank won't fire a mortar, it'll just try to shoot Alicia.

My 3 europa editions are here. Pictured next to the US PS3 copy.

Which country are you in? I've seen pics from retailers in SG and HK with the NA steelcase edition. Also India on the other hand is considered EU region for PS4 games so India got the Europa edition.

I picked up mine today for around $35 (Converted from MYR). It comes with steel case. Region ALL. I wish more games use this region.

Going to fill up that VC survey.
EDIT: Done. Basically localization & port begging for VC3 all the way. Also begging for VC2 port and Azure localization as well.

My local Best Buy got a few extra copies in so I ordered one for in store pick up. I'm going to return my dented Amazon copy. I'm usually not one to return something for a cosmetic defect, but I know the dent would annoy me every time I pulled out the game, so...

Region ALL is NA btw. At least most of my NA games say region ALL but stil can only use DLC from NA PSN.

Yeah. I think so. Rated with ESRB, should be NA. I don't even know what rating board we use in here.
And here I thought region all means I could use DLC from any store. Not a problem with PS4 though.

I'm so glad people get another chance to play this great game. I just sad I'm on vacation for two more weeks (ok not that sad) and can't play it until I get back!

How much are the themes, or were they a digital pre-order bonus for PSN?

Themes are €1,99 each and/or they are included in the €19,99 Digital Deluxe Edition (EU, don't know about US/other) which is available for the first 2 weeks according to SEGA Europe and also includes the full avatar pack (€3,99)

*prices on EU:NL store

just looked at the themes in NA store and the squad 7 theme looks nice but no custom music = I wont be using it. Will stick to the firewatch theme.

Ignoring the lv up of engineers means passing one of the best early game buffs, the "All Defend" order. They are also extremely useful in certain missions, such as Rosies side episode, Hard skirmish 8 and a few others. All classes are useful, if you know how to use them.

Added to the OP, thank you for the summaries.

Oh hey, don't know if anyone has posted this tip yet, but:

When you get within your specific weapon's range of an enemy, the arrow over their head will change from gold to red. This is the difference between 7 shots to kill, and hundreds of shots to kill. This works for all weapons and items in the game, from rifles to grenades to mortars to healing items (friendly units in range of healing items will go from gold to blue).

Edit: Also, if you want to change the facing of a unit without using the stick and risk moving them or losing AP, turn the camera to face where you want the unit to face and tap the L2 button.

Good stuff. Mentioning the former had completely slipped past me, and I didn't even know about the latter trick despite the stupid hours I've put to this game over the years.

If s character dies in a mission are they gone forever? Or will they be back in the next mission ? Sorry if stupid question

When a character loses all their HP they go into a "downed" state, where you have 3 turns to get a medic to them (all you have to do is touch the downed unit with a friendly unit). If you don't get them a medic within 3 turns OR if an enemy unit touches them, that character dies and is gone for the rest of your playthrough. Story characters are the only exception to this. They don't "die" they just retreat and can be used in the next mission.

Character permadeath is very lenient in this game. It is not hard like (Classic) Fire Emblem.

After a unit is downed you have 3 (!) turns to run to their body and pick them up. Then they're safe.
If you finish a mission while a unit is downed on the ground, they're safe.
If the character that is downed is a main character in the story (Alicia, Rosie, Largo, Welkin, useless Shamrock guy) they won't permadie but you won't be able to use them for the rest of the mission and in most cases you'll lose a command point.

If the enemy touches the downed troop first then they permadie. So during your turn if someone gets knocked down in front of any enemies, you should prioritize rescuing them.

^^

A tip for all the new members of Squad 7. Sometimes its better not to deploy a full squad to the map. You want all your CP of course so deploy all your commanders, but think about the map and having to waste CP moving a whole squad.

Ah yes, that's a good tip. That's a mistake I made when I first played through and contributed to a lot of my sluggish play. It's OK to leave a few slots open; try to better manage the units you have on field than rely on pure numbers of soldiers.

If you ignore this advice you will get a very rude awakening in a few chapters. lol

Should be getting mine from amazon today.

Praying to the bubble-wrap gods it gets here okay. Kinda bummed no regular case but whatever.

Yeah leaving some slots open is beneficial at times. Say you capture an enemy camp, you can then spawn your troops there for the next turn. That can be more useful than say dragging low AP units across the map.

It's doing well on Amazon, I'm going to go on a limb and say it now is getting that success. Way more than initially.

Haha, the size of the Gallian army in comparison to their total population always gets me. "A population of just over 430.000" and their standing army during peace-time is 80.000 ground troops, 10.000 navy personel and 2000 Military Police.

I think its an error. Gallia is based on the Netherlands, isn't it?

Belgium had like 8 million people in 1930. Netherlands a slight bit less.

They probably meant a population of 4 million. Which is still low considering the countries its based on.

They do have mandatory conscription and it seems that pretty much everyone gets in the army, including 13-year-olds.

Netherlands and Switzerland primarily, with a side of Finland, considering how the populace is armed and the stance of independence and neutrality. There are some clearly Finnish names among the Gallian side cast. And yes, it is very likely to be an error and supposed to be 4.3M, which would make sense with the large, uninhabitable patch of desert smack right in the middle of the country.

Oh yeah, the Gallian war itself is pretty much Winter War given how it fits to the picture of the larger war between the Empire and the Federation.

See, that is just the thing. This is before the conscription, which puts their wartime headcount far above that of the peace time force. And never forget, Aisha is a volunteer and a very exceptional one at that. They make it clear that it is very unusual for her to be in the military machine at her age.
