GameStop Reserves All of Its Initial Nintendo Switch Allocation

The most impressive part is that the system is selling this well with an utterly terrible launch lineup.

It's the early adopters/core. Similar thing happened with the Wii U and we have seen how that has played out over the years. Looking at milestones, so 6 months, 12 months and 24 months post launch will obviously show if Nintendo figured it out and released a product that caught more than just their core audience.

Nintendo is actually losing money by not having enough shipped for launch. I was considering trading in my Wii U to take advantage of the trade in promotion. I called my local Gamestop today and they told me they sold out of pre-orders. Nintendo, you lost a sale!

Eh. It's horrible in quantity, but pretty good quality-wise. Only 1 2 Switch is a seeming dud (and even that might prove to be a sleeper hit with casuals, though I seriously doubt it.)

It's neither the best nor worst launch lineup I've seen.

Switch is also more expensive than 3ds. And the games are much more expensive. And accessories are much more expensive.

3ds needed a price cut quite fast after launch. My bet is that Switch will get one too (or at least some game bundled) before holidays.

Wii U didn't launch with a killer app, but it launched with a system seller. It would be quite a good surprise if a Zelda will manage to sell as well as a 2d Mario.

Unlike the 3DS, Switch is getting Mario Kart and Splatoon from April while 3DS struggled to get new titles out after launch which lead to the price cut due to lack of software to sell hardware.

If hardware sales for Switch can be maintained due to software, then Nintendo won't have to do a price cut early on.

Yeah but it would be sold out regardless, and as much as I love zelda...it is really not a massive seller like people act, it is not near Nintendos biggest franchise.

I mean you're not wrong, but I don't necessarily think it's that far off. Plus it's been 6 years since Skyward Sword, and all these remakes/remasters have made fans grow quite ravenous for a new entry.

Oh don't worry I know all about the zelda hype, I mean I was disappointed in the reveal and switch, but I am forking $400 over just for zelda, so that tells you something, or maybe I'm stupid lol.

Oh wow.

I've got a pre-order in at my local GameStop and one on Amazon for good measure (that I will end up letting a friend take).

Does anyone remember how the Wii U was on launch? I seem to remember it being readily available, not to mention scalpers having a bad time with it.

No it's okay, I too am stupid. I have the Wii U version pre-ordered long ago for less than a dollar, yet I still ended up saying fuck it, that I'd prefer to play it on a new console after all now.
Also Nintendo harps on my fear of missing out and struggling to buy the Switch later on this year, so I figure I may as well pre-order the Switch and get it now.

Selling out on preorders is exactly the same as saying "a game scored more than 4/10". It's not a bad sign, but it's not a real indication of performance. At all.

As someone else pointed out, this is launching in early March: About a month and a half after Christmas. It wouldn't be surprising for new hardware to see less sales due to that. But will that be the case?

While the initial pre-orders aren't that indicative of popularity, it should be interesting to see the total number of pre-orders by March 2nd.

Just doing some basic math in my ignorance,

I'll assume each Gametop averaged with 50 available reservations. I've seen some stores allotting 30 reservations, and others, like the one I went to, just south of Grapevine, allotting 100. I'm probably low-balling, but regardless:

50 x 3,900 = 195,000 pre-orders.

Hardly a scientific approach to getting the numbers, but I'd say that'd be a reasonably good first wave of pre-orders for a single retailer.

They'd have a separate (additional) online allotment as well. Though it gets muddled since (as I learned yesterday) they shuffle the units from stores to online and between stores depending on traffic.

I'm not really shocked it was always gonna sell to the Nintendo faithful. Wii U had a pretty good launch too.

I wanna see where switch is 6 months after launch.

Splatoon is a generic summer release, might as well be September for what we know.

MK Deluxe will push for Nintendo enthusiasts who don't like Zelda and who don't own a Wii U. We'll see in April how many they are.

Damn straight...

It's whatever though, I was going to buy the Switch at some point, may as well be now rather than later. And any potential drought I'll suffer after being done with BoTW will be covered by PS4 exclusives. (Nier and Persona for starters)

It won't be.

That thing is probably game of the generation. I just can't imagine that it's anything worse than "top three Zelda game ever."

And I don't feel like I've bought into any crazy hype or anything!

As hyped as I am for Zelda, I'll never call any game the "game of the generation", much less GOTY before playing it. While it likely will be a great game, it'd be hard to take something seriously that called something their "game of the generation" before they've even played it.

Switch will sell really well at launch no matter what, there are millions of NIntendo fans who want the next new Nintendo games and this is the only way to play it.

The real question is for the holiday season can (1) Nintendo product a lot of units (2) will be there be a ton of demand for it.

I don't think anyone knows the answer to that and we really won't until January 2018.

I dont know about doing well, I used to catch the train into Auckland City every day, only got about 10 streetpasses from the same people for about 3 years haha

I didn't say it did well, I said it did relatively decently compared to Nintendo's consoles, which isn't exactly a hard feat given that even the Wii did poorly here. :p

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
I mean its even referenced in that post that the Wii U also sold out its launch units....

On 1 hand I remember that article about dont look into the PS4 launch numbers too much...
On the other hand the Wii U also sold well its first few months.

All I can say on this is .....we have to just wait n see.

To say that would suck would be an understatement. But hey, I have yet to outright dislike/hate a mainline Zelda game, so BoTW would have to be some hot garbage to turn me off.

Sure, I still haven't played SS, the reactions didn't seemed too hot. I hope there is a switch port with pro controller support down the road I guess.

The only thing about BOTW that scares me is the maybe lack? Of story driven elements. Like MGS 5 scared me, but we shall see, day one anyways.

Wouldnt it be funny if this thing turns out to be a huge hit?

I doubt it will happen, but af least general public understands now that Nintendo has a new toy for sale. Apposed to the wiiu being the wii controller noone wanted.

I was pretty bummed about the Switch after the reveal but the more I think about just picking up my console and bringing it everywhere I go, on vacation, to the cottage, anywhere... the more excited I'm getting about it.

If they pack in Zelda, mario and Splatoon in bundles during holiday i can see it doing pretty well especially if they cut the price by like 50.

Before i think the only bundles that will come is during summer with Mariokart 8 and 1 2 Switch. Best bundles are kept for holidays thats a thing for sure.

But yeah we should wait before talking Switch off after the holidays and when more games are out.

The real test for the NS will be after launch. With the way Nintendo tends to ship their consoles I was expecting this to be sold out on launch.

I'd be surprised if Splatoon 2 didn't come out by June, there's not much else for Nintendo only titles and the other question is when Smash Bros and Pokémon will be released because it wouldn't make much sense to delay them to 2018 since we are talking about evergreen titles.
