Well no shit you have to keep the disc in.
The physical version authenticates your purchase of the game via the disc drive because the disc is the tangible proof you own the game. For digital purchases the PSN store knows you bought the digi version because it obviously has the record.
They can't give you the Digital version as an upgrade without a way to authenticate how you originally bought the game and if you get physical it obviously needs that disc to prove that you own it because there would be no record in the PSN store of you buying it.

Yeah he’s biased af towards Xbox, but is what he’s saying even biased? If anything it’s just incredibly obvious, like no shit, how else would they verify you’d bought the game previously. Is he trying to imply if you buy physical XB1 games and then get the free XSX version it can be digital? First I’ve heard of it.

I'd imagine the XSX will work the exact same way right? If you have a physical disc from the Xbox One and there is an enhanced XSX version, certainly you have to put the disc in. So not sure why he would even point this out about the PS5.

No, that's not an accurate assessment.
You need to insert the disc in your PS4, and also connect your PS4 to your PS5 Ethernet cable. After that, you must authenticate the game using your PlayStation Camera (sold separately) to scan the UPC code from the box, the sales receipt, the credit card used to purchase the game (sorry if you paid cash, you're out of luck here), and your driver's license. After completing this process, you will be granted an exclusive license to stream the game from the PS5 to your Sony Xperia phone, where you can play the game using convenient touch screen controls.
