You ought to pay the newer FIFA games. They are more realsitic, but the flexibility on how to change the game is soo immense.
That's true, and sadly it is part of what makes me don't get into the latest, more simulation-prone, entries of the series.
There was something I felt so rewarding about the blazing fast and fine-tuned response of the players on
FIFA 99 that, even though it is arcade-like, made competing with others very direct and enjoyable in tight matches (it was visceral even, I think)... more than ever a reaction game where square balls instantly go from side to side of the pitch in a spectacular manner and some tackles are split-second moments only a master player could avoid gracefully, and that without taking into account the madness that it could be changing for a greater 'game speed' on the menus! In the most purely top-level versus-game sense, it was a tense button masher of fast reflexes (those poor 'W' of the keyboards) with a little of improvised tactics (in a brisk moment) sprinkled on top.
From what I tried of them, I appreciate the newer ones for what they are, but is the more game-like fighting competitiveness part of that early era what attracted me most in a... game.
