Of course they'd have to pick the franchise that is an abhorrent piece of shit in 9/10 entries. *sigh*

just these games...for now, but Sega and Nintendo have been cross pollinating for a few years now, so I suspect we'll continue to see them partner on projects.

You mean there's a chance of seeing F-ZERO GXU?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jk, I know that will never happen, not in this century.

Stuff they need to announce to get people running into the store and buying a WiiU. 3D Mario, Smash, or Kart. Spread out announcements between now and e3.

Ok, but they explicitly said yesterday and reiterated today that they will do that in another Direct before E3.

...And those have been confirmed to be in the early-June Nintendo Direct.

EDIT: @peaceiscloser: Nintendo has been willing to do "variable pricing" for a very long time...

I wasn't aware of that, but I just don't think they're in a position to be sitting on games and major announcements at this point.

Sure, they could talk about all that stuff now, and leave nothing for E3. I think sitting on it for three weeks was the right decision.

e3 they'll get overshadowed by new xbox and ps4 stuff. Why fight for attention when you can get it all now?

If they have nothing new for e3 they'll be criticized a hundred times harder than they are for a bare-bones direct weeks beforehand. The average gamer is barely paying attention to game news right now.

This is a direct only to warm you guys up for the E3 ones. Nothing new announced except for Sonic exclusive.

They're saving all the real stuff for E3. People need to calm down. No one would blow their load pre-E3 like many of you seem to have expected.

sonic's seriously improved with the last two entries. i can enjoy a mixed bag like secret rings (which desperately needed some refinement in the form of a sequel instead of whatever black knight was), but i understand it's not for everyone. colors and generations on the other hand, have good game design all-around, with a few flaws here and there. if they were the sonic games that followed the adventure series instead of heroes and shadow, i think people would still hold the series in high esteem.

Mmm... NSLU's box looks cool but that's not enough to get me to buy it standalone. I'll go for the DLC version.

I'm really excited about the Sonic patnership. Generations and Colors were excellent and the last Racing game trumps Mario Kart imo. I know Sonic still gets a lot of shit for 06, Unleashed, Shadow etc. but if Lost World is on par with or better than the last two games, that's a bfd

Well, everyone's problem with the Sonic series up until Colors was having to play as his shitty friends. Now that Sega's finally listened to complaints about the series instead of doubling down on what made it suck, I hope people will finally give it a chance.

the direct was ok. one surprise (sonic) and dates for nslu (earlier than I expected), pikmin and wonderful101. the next one will blow us away like the january one. call me a part of the hype train for that direct

Where is Wii Fit U? Why on earth are they holding back Pikmin and 101 a month later than other regions, when there's nothing on the release schedule? Other than that, I'm satiated a bit.

I'm sure this has probably already been said, but I was annoyed at the Best Buy announcement. If you want to bring E3 to the players, you have the tools right there in the consoles. GIVE US DOWNLOADABLE DEMOS OF E3 GAMES. Even if they only have 5 uses, or less even, it's better than having to go stand in line at Best Buy for it. And some of us don't exactly live near a Best Buy.

Now if only we could find an appropriate Miiverse community to beg for this in, maybe they'd actually listen.

As for Sonic, I'm thinking if the next Sonic game is going to be Nintendo exclusive, maybe rather than another Secret Rings/Black Knight game (which this honestly sounds a bit similar to based on the title alone) perhaps we'll get a real Sonic game with Nintendo overseeing production and continue the phenomenon that we got with Lego City -- that is to say, maybe it'll actually be a good Sonic game for once.

i think they planned on the console being adopted by the casual audience faster at launch. it will flop if released right now. they need to wait until next-gen starts for that and the xbox 360/ps3 sales slow to a crawl.

Yea perhaps they're holding things back for a re-launch. Still lame for us who already bought in! May lead to a healthier system for us in the future though, so I'll give them some leeway.

They confirmed the release date for the title, confirmed that they would be sharing more in the near future, and kept screen time for their new announcements, the two first-party games (and the DLC pack) releasing imminently and gave some time to RE, which is due out next week. They also made clear beforehand that this was about summer games, and that a look at anything beyond the next couple of months would come in June.

Not sure how it's farcical.

...you do realize this wasn't one of their E3 NDs right? It surpassed my expectations, especially because we can extrapolate that the 3rd Sonic game is a Mario/Sonic racing game.

I also noticed Reggie looked worn down. He's sorta creepy when not smiling.

But this is pretty much exactly what was expected: Release dates for the few games in the near future. Confirmation that all the things later than summer are being shown during the e3 nintendo direct. One actual bit of news (the sega stuff). there was never a chance that this was the day they were going to spill all their secrets.

So because they didn't show new footage of a game releasing in 3 months the platform has reached farcical status? That doesnt even make sense
I mean the whole Wii U situation, starting at E3 11 is farcical. I know this is not their big Direct but it was almost not worth having. They could have done a press release for most of that. We've seen pikmin, no 101 footage and stupid Game and Wario that we all know about. The SEGA news was the only new stuff. If they are going to do a direct, do it properly. Don't mention 101 if you're not gonna show it.

Anyway let's see how incompetent their BIG ND is. I'm happy to eat humble pie if they do something surprising.

I can't believe I managed to be disappointed with even the low expectations of 1 interesting thing. The fact that the first footage shown was mario sliding down a slope at 15 frames a second for a fucking Olympics game should have said it all.

The Best Buy thing was a good move. They need to show Wii U to those who still don't own the console, so it makes sense they will emphasize on that.

And that doesn't mean the demos won't come out on eShop. I can actually see them announcing that on the E3 Direct:

"Super Mario Universe will be playable in select Best Buy retailers in a few days, but Wii U owners can download the demo... right now."

1) They showed entirely new info on Pikmin
2) They showed new info (for westerners) on Game & Wario. Just because some people aren't interested doesn't make it irrelevant.
3) They're getting the word out about the AC:NL dev video series.
4) Quick announcement of the AC:NL Puzzle and Stationery.
4) We got dates for some games we didn't have dates for
5) Announcements of an exclusive parternship deal including footage of a new game (again, personal interest irrelevant.)

And that doesn't even cover everything they touched on. For a 30 minute Direct it may have been lacking "megatons" but it certainly lived up to its purpose, and did so far more effectively than the wall of text with bolded game names that their Press Releases often boil down to.

They'll still coverage from gaming websites. Not to mention the advertisements that will roll out WHEN THE GAMES ACTUALLY LAUNCH

Wow caps lock and cursing, reminds me of the good old gamefaqs days.

They announced Smash before the game was being made out of desperation.

They showed a bit of new footage and some dates. That's all. There's no reason to have a Nintendo direct with the assumption of actual news if they're going to have a fucking ten minute segment in the middle telling me how I can download user shit for a 3ds eshop game I don't care about.

Again, the complaints boil down to "They showed too many things I personally don't care about." They almost always touch on a feature of their most recent eShop releases in these things to garner interest. (And M&DK seems fairly well received by those who bought it so far. I know I'm enjoying it.) Nintendo Direct doesn't exist exclusively to drop world-changing megatons.

NINTENDO SEALS EXCLUSIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH SEGA ON UPCOMING SONIC THE HEDGEHOG GAMES

Nintendo Direct Also Announces Wii U Games Shown at E3 2013 to be Playable at Select Best Buy Stores

REDMOND, Wash., May 17, 2013 – The next title in SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will be exclusive to Nintendo's Wii U home console and Nintendo 3DS portable system. Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata announced the details of a new partnership with SEGA during a new Nintendo Direct video announcement today. Sonic Lost World is a new action platforming game, and more information about it will be announced before the E3 2013 video game trade show begins on June 11.

The Nintendo Direct also announced Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games for Wii U, and revealed that additional SEGA Game Gear games would be coming to the Virtual Console service for Nintendo 3DS. Outside of SEGA news, Nintendo announced that select Wii U games featured at E3 2013 will soon be playable at participating Best Buy stores, the launch date for New Super Luigi U, new Pikmin 3 game details and additional information about a variety of previously announced Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games.

"The onetime rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "These announcements in conjunction with SEGA demonstrate the commitment we have to bringing great games to the Wii U platform, and set the stage for our upcoming announcements at E3."

To view the Nintendo Direct in its entirety, visit http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct. Today's announcements included:

Wii U News

• Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games: The game includes a variety of events from the Winter Games, including curling, skiing, figure skating pairs and snowboard slopestyle – which will make its Olympic debut in Sochi, Russia. Different events might use the Wii Remote Plus controller, Wii U GamePad controller or both. In addition to realistic events, the game also includes those set in the worlds of Sonic and Mario that let players perform moves not possible in real life. Launch details and timing will be announced at a later date.

• Experience Games from Nintendo's E3 Booth at Best Buy: Exclusively at participating Best Buy locations in the United States and Canada, consumers will be able to play some of the unreleased Wii U games featured at E3 while the event is occurring in Los Angeles. Details about locations and which games will be featured will be revealed in the coming weeks.

• New Super Luigi U: The Year of Luigi-themed downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U offers players 82 updated courses. But it also includes a new playable character in multiplayer mode: Nabbit, who steals items from Toad Houses. Nabbit can't power up, but also won't take damage when he touches enemies. New Super Luigi U will be released as downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U in the Nintendo eShop on June 20 for $19.99. But in honor of the Year of Luigi, Nintendo is also offering a standalone packaged version of New Super Luigi U that doesn't require New Super Mario Bros. U on Aug. 25 at a suggested retail price of $29.99.

• The Wonderful 101: The mass-action adventure from Platinum Games launches Sept. 15. Additional details will be announced after E3.

• Pikmin 3: New playable characters Alph, Brittany and Charlie recruit the Pikmin creatures to help them gather fruit so that they can return with the seeds to save their home, Planet Koppai. Players can divide activities among the different characters, and explore separate areas in the same map with different groups of Pikmin. Using the GamePad (known as the KopPad in the game), players can view the overall map and grasp what each character and Pikmin are up to. Players also can choose their preferred control option: GamePad in conjunction with the TV, Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk combo or GamePad only in off-TV mode. Players can also use the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk with the GamePad as a second-screen monitor. Pikmin 3 launches Aug. 4.

• GAME & WARIO: The game launches in stores and in the Nintendo eShop June 23 at a suggested retail price of $39.99, and includes a number of games from WarioWare, Inc., that use the GamePad in different ways. Newly revealed games include: Island, which lets two to five people launch little creatures called Fronks onto islands in the sea to score points; Patchwork, a puzzle game that tests players' pattern-recognition skills; and Kung-Fu, which challenges players to help Young Cricket navigate a course safely using the forward-looking view on the TV and the top-down view on the GamePad. A new Iwata Asks feature offers more details about the game at http://iwataasks.nintendo.com.

• Resident Evil Revelations: Capcom's horror-survival game is launching in stores and in the Nintendo eShop on May 21. The game originally released for Nintendo 3DS, and the Wii U version offers players updated HD graphics, GamePad controls and new game content. Players can use the GamePad to view the map and change items using the touch screen without pausing their progress. Or they can play the full game on the GamePad in off-TV mode, or play with the Wii U Pro Controller. The game is Miiverse-compatible, and a demo version is currently available in the Nintendo eShop.

Nintendo 3DS News

• SEGA Game Gear: Games from the classic hand-held system are headed to the Virtual Console service. These include:
• Columns
• Crystal Warriors
• Defenders of Oasis
• Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
• G-LOC: Air Battles
• Shining Force II: The Sword of Hajya
• Sonic Blast
• Sonic Drift 2
• Sonic Labyrinth
• Sonic the Hedgehog
• Sonic the Hedgehog 2
• Tails Adventure
• Vampire: Master of Darkness

• Inside the Treehouse with Animal Crossing: New Leaf: Because of the vast amount of content in the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Leaf game, Nintendo's Treehouse localization team is hosting an ongoing video series to talk about the franchise and many of the fun features of the new game. The videos will be available on Nintendo's YouTube channel and in the Nintendo eShop on a regular basis leading up to the game's June 9 launch. Additionally, a new Animal Crossing panel for Puzzle Swap is now available for StreetPass Mii Plaza, and fans also might find a special Animal Crossing-themed message on Swapnote.

• Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D: This game launches in stores and in the Nintendo eShop on May 24 and includes all the fun of the original Wii game, now optimized for portable play. It also includes eight new unlockable levels that are each based on one of the eight worlds from the original game. These levels will challenge players with new elements like platforms that force them to move at a faster pace, large drops of tar falling from the ceiling and giant rotating stone gears that can alter the level itself.

• A Legendary Sale: The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons arrive on the Virtual Console service for Nintendo 3DS on May 30. Because playing the games together unlocks so much additional content, Nintendo is offering them for just $4.99 each for the first three weeks after launch. After this promotion expires, the games will be available for $5.99 each.

• Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move: The game, which launched May 9 exclusively in the Nintendo eShop, challenges players to place tiles on the bottom screen to guide the Minis to their goal on the top screen. The game includes more than 180 stages, but also dramatically extends the fun of the game by letting players create their own stages and share them with others. Players can opt to try a random user-created level or one created by their friends. They can also select from the most popular levels overall or search the top levels of the week.

Another Nintendo Direct focused on future Wii U content will air around the time of E3 2013.

Remember that Wii U and Nintendo 3DS feature parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu and http://www.nintendo.com/3ds.

What a vague statement. People beg them for Pikmin 3 for years and now seeing new Pikmin 3 footage and getting a release date is not newsworthy.

I'm not going to pretend the Wii U doesn't lack games right now, but if you're an early adopter of a Nintendo console and getting release dates and new feature announcements and footage for first party Nintendo games is a huge letdown for you, then maybe you should have put more thought into whether you really wanted to buy a Nintendo console.

Just for curiosity's sake, what determines a "new product" vs. "endless rehashes"? Because as I see it, Nintendo has had plenty of new experiences in the past few years on 3DS (Pushmo/Dillon/Sticker Star/SM3DL/Kid Icarus/Mario&DK/FreakyForms) many of which are dismissed as "a 3ds eshop game I don't care about" regardless of their quality, and it's just a matter of time until they fully get there on Wii U. But I really can't grasp what people are asking for when they complain about rehashes. If Nintendo puts out new IPs, they often get ignored and people cry out "Where's Zelda/Metroid/Smash?"

They need to get the games out faster, but this all just echoes in my head as the same FUD that surrounded the 3DS launch, and where's the 3DS FUD now? Dead and buried while the 3DS reigns over the dedicated gaming handheld market.

Wii U isn't dead in the water and it has games in development. Just because a random Nintendo Direct announced one day before it aired didn't have E3-levels of announcements doesn't mean it's the end. Nintendo Direct was never promised to be The Official Nintendo Megaton Show. It's basically just a video press release. And a lot of us are much happier to see these smaller Directs than to just get a boring old wall of text. And with only a month until E3 they're not likely to show all their cards now and leave nothing for E3 anyway.

You chose to become an early adopter, learn to expect the post-launch drought.

Yakuza HD (formerly playstation exclusive franchise) on wii u is big too imo

Oh yea, I haven't been in this thread since GAF was down. The biggest shocker to me was $19.99 for NSLU. I was totally expecting it to be $30 minimum, but damn, $19.99 is a great value.

I bought a WiiU because of Bayo2. That's it, that's all. Otherwise I would have waited until Smash. Instead all I see is continue to see is proof that my thoughts about it being a Bayo and Smash box are just as valid as when I bought the Wii assuming it would be a Zelda and Smash box, only now I have less faith in Zelda.
