Considering the number of trophies I'm gonna say this is probably the PC version ported to PS4 (minus obvious things like 144fps support)
Good. I'll stick with the PC version I already have then. Thanks!

never got around to playing this on Ps3, but i like games with a good story. looking forward to playing this
No that hard, really, but a set of them based on total kill tally, so it might come to doing some meatgrinder stuff to get a platinum. I seem to remember that the 8th skirmish map was excellent for this on hard difficulty due to endless waves of mooks, who were then cut down by proper intercept-fire setup.
Having anything resembling a consensus before the official release date would be a rather novel thing to have, methinks.
How does this version compare to the PC version?
well i just ordered the europa edition, which means i may have to wait another like 2 weeks to play it, so i'll just keep outta this thread until then =]Try to avoid spoilers if you can.. It's an old game, but if you're going in blind, there is plenty to spoil.
Amazon has been preparing my order for like 3 days now, but supposedly its getting to my house tomorrow? Guess we'll see how this pans out
so the differences are things that the PC version has that the Ps4 doesn't. which means the PC version is the definitive edition of the game.I was hoping that the thread wouldn't turn into platform wars with talking about this, but since people are probably going to ask this a lot, I might as well give a full answer.
PC and PS4 version have the exact same content + contained DLC.
PC has better graphical options (can go up to 4K).
PC has unlocked framerate (linked to the refresh rate of your monitor) but going higher than 60 causes problems, so that's a non-plus. Barely anyone noticed this because G-SYNC monitors and such are niche.
PC has model swapping (can swap gameplay models with cutscene ones for better quality).
PC has a rebalance mod "Gallian Crossfire" which fixes a lot of the issues of the base game. This IMO is a pretty big deal and a lot of fun for replays.
PC allows you to modify the game systems yourself. So if you want to make units recruitable and not reload saves forever to go chasing after your waifu Jann you can just make a few hex tweaks and presto.
PC allows you to use pretty much any controller you want, including keyboard + mouse, which I think is the best way to play the game (fast, precise aiming, VERY fast menu control).
PC version is cheaper. Base price is $20 and has gone on discount every sale. I think I've given away over 15 copies of the game.
PC version has two glitches the PS4 version doesn't have. A certain ladder in chapter 15A causes you to fall through the map. The second glitch means that tanks cannot climb steep inclines, but this only affects strategy in Report 08 by limiting one enemy tank's movement (making the mission easier). It affects chapter 13B but doesn't change the strategy for the mission.
That should be everything.
This game has one of the best tactical rpg systems ever. Deployment needs to be strategic, iirc character perma death happens if you let the enemy unit capture a fallen teammate and the movement is fluid.
Kinda weird thats its been preparing for the last couple days but generally if you have amazon prime and had release day shipping, or two day shipping, checked then they like to wait to the last minute and ship it late afternoon or night of the day before with next day shipping. It usually freaks people out the way they wait to the last minute.
just for the record i am wondering: since this game is 8 years old, is this thread going to be spoiler tagged? or are spoilers fair game here?
Whether or not people actually respect this remains to be seen.**Important Thread Reminder**
Where this is a remaster or a previously popular game, please be careful on story spoilers and make sure you use spoiler tags appropriately. There are many new players jumping in on the game for the first time, for multiple reasons, including: new Playstation family members, pure trophy hunters (no PS3 trophies), or they may just be finally setting time aside to play through what's said to be a great game. Please be considerate and enjoy the experience everyone!

Damn I just bought this on PC and it's nearly finished downloading. I was under the impression that it was a good port. What kind of bugs did you experience?
One thing I've always wondered: Is Marina Wulfstan such an obvious Sniper Wolf reference in the Japanese version or was that done in localization?
Is it worth it to buy this if i have the ps3 version laying here? I dont really care for the thropies but the extra dlc might interest me.
As far as I can tell, Metal Gear was an IP that's success hinged entirely on western sales and never really took off in Japan, so I'm going to have to assume it's the localization.
There's quite a few characters in VC1 and VC2 that got altered in localization, so Marina being so is probable.
Unfortunately for humanity, Edy/Forced Meme Character was not altered in localization. The gods of writing weep. WEEP! Seriously if you showed me Edy and gave no further context, I'd assume this was a Bethesda game.
The DLC involving Selvaria was interesting in few ways. You have to use the Imp mooks a bit with all the limitations that come from that. Selvaria herself is just as you might expect. Story-wise, it helps to humanize the Imperial side a bit and almost makes you feel guilty for something that you might consider just another notch on your kill tally before it.
And if you 100% it, you get to rock the Ruhm with everything that entails. That thing is hilariously broken.
Cornbread has a mention of this in the OP. Plenty of people are picking this up for the first time, so everything should be tagged as usual.
Whether or not people actually respect this remains to be seen.
Is there permadeath in this, and if so how does it work?
Character permadeath is very lenient in this game. It is not hard like (Classic) Fire Emblem.
After a unit is downed you have 3 (!) turns to run to their body and pick them up. Then they're safe.
If you finish a mission while a unit is downed on the ground, they're safe.
If the character that is downed is a main character in the story (Alicia, Rosie, Largo, Welkin, useless Shamrock guy) they won't permadie but you won't be able to use them for the rest of the mission and in most cases you'll lose a command point.
If the enemy touches the downed troop first then they permadie. So during your turn if someone gets knocked down in front of any enemies, you should prioritize rescuing them.
Literally mentioned on this very page:
Crap my game came today but no one told me so i was sitting here doing nothing while it lay on window sill now its almost 9:00 :/
Never too late to boot it up and start playing!
I'm seeing a lot of spoiler tags flying around, so apologies for skipping around. What are command points for/what do they do?
I really wish this game had a demo. I'm interested in it but I need to see something that really pushes me....
