Sounds like this film died a miserable death in reshoots, but one has to wonder what kind of a mess it was before then.

"It's clobbering time" is something Ben Grimm's abusive brother used to say before he slapped him about. Comic book fans will love that.

Probably not. But in the hypothetical scenario where they got FF back, they wouldn't need to push anything back. There's no rush to bring the property to the screen.

This, Marvel wouldn't be willing to move established plans around to fit in a FF movie reboot into Phase 4 or maybe even 5.

But they'd totally use the characters in other films and establish certain villains like Doom, Kang, Annihulus etc.

Apparently enough of a mess that the final edit necessitated eliminating the sequence that the marketing campaign has been using as its money-shot for the last 5 months.

This is gonna be one of the most liked RLM episodes in recent memory, I bet.

Why are we saying this is some sacrilege or sign its horrible. Comic books are filled with much more cheese

On the whole, comic book dialogue hasn't been that bad in at least 10 years.

You are also comparing apples and oranges here: the point is repurposing an iconic and fun phrase into something Ben's brother would say before punching him. That sounds pretty "try hard" dark to me.

But, but it was getting good buzz on twitter!

So was ASM2...

Wait, what was cut out?

Not surprised since it was a rush job in an attempt to prevent the rights reverting back to Marvel.

See you all in another 7 years.

Serious Question: If this movie bombs at the box office....what are the chances of Fox getting desperate enough to sell the character rights back to Marvel?

There's 4 things that Fox will do.

1. Try and boost the Fantastic Four by having them cross over with the X-Men.
2. Not make another movie until 7 years later to stop the right from going back to Marvel.
3. Pull a Sony and allow Marvel to borrow the Fantastic Four.
4. Sell the right back to Marvel.

That's a shame, but it's still early for reviews. I've never been sold on F4 as a concept, ever. I'll probably check out Hickman's f4 when I dive into Marvel Unlimited.

It may go the way of spiderman, but i wonder if marvel would even be willing to push back more films in order to slot in a 3rd fantastic reboot

At best they would probably just use Doom and name drop Reed. I don't think having access to Doom would make automatically make Marvel Studios good at writing villains though.

I really wonder about the development of this thing

knowing Trank had allegedly those issues of being on coke all the time and the studio just kinda hating him

I just cannot imagine he sanctioned something like the "listen to dr doom here" line

the dude likes the comic books

Was hoping this might be interesting if only for Doom. Early impressions are obviously not good, and despite hoping, it looked pretty eh from jump street.

Likely to be on the worse end of things, and I won't be part of the opening weekend problem with this one. Maybe take a look at it down the road. While the Dr Doom line is bad, it's pretty much as good as "IT'S ALTERING YOUR BRAIN CHEMISTRY!" (you'll know it when you see it in a different flick this year).

The Clobberin Time one though...

Not surprised by what I am reading here, movie just doesn't look good and Fox clearly does not know how to handle the franchise. Hope it is given back to Marvel if this movie tanks, which I think may be the case. The buzz for this movie and word of mouth has been non existent or negative.

Continued after the previous thread got pulled. Seemed like a really lively discussion so hopefully it'll keep going here without anymore disruption!

Just saw it at a preview screening in the UK. Full disclosure: I wasn't that hyped to see the film and thought it looked very generic from the trailers. Little did I know that it's actually a lot worse than the trailers and the 2005 version is somehow better.

The Good:
  • The acting is much better than the film deserves. The guy who played Sue/Johnny's dad was the best by far.

The Bad:
  • The tone is all over the place. There's more humour than the trailer implied but it's also quite brutal at times, especially when they transform and also when
Doom goes on a killing spree near the end
    .
  • Michael B Jordan doesn't show up for the first 25% of the film
  • Characters are off screen for fucking AGES at a time and it's really noticeable, not sure if reshoots may have had a hand in this. The team aren't really all together as a unit much until the end of the film.
  • The only reason they go to the other dimension is because
Reed, Doom, & Johnny get drunk
. Seriously. It is awful and people will probably be talking about how shitty this set-up is for years.
  • They don't get transformed into superheroes until half-way through the film. Seriously.
  • The CGI of the accident scene is WANK.
  • There's a very sudden
time jump of 1 year roughly an hour into the film
that feels like it was tacked on in reshoots
  • Doom
doesn't show up until the final 20 minutes of the film and his screen time is only about 15 minutes
. Oh and he looks like some sort of Downs Syndrome sock puppet, just awful.
  • The final set-piece doesn't make much sense at all, I was very confused by the logic of what was happening.
  • It has really really long credits which I assume was to paper over the fact it's been cobbled together badly in the editing room.
  • Someone also noted that some scenes from the trailers are missing (like Thing jumping out of the plane). I can only assume they were casualties of the struggle to salvage this mess.
  • Oh and Johnny talks about Instagram while he's in the parallel dimension. Fuck this movie.
3.5/10. I'll be around for a few hours so feel free to ask me anything

I see them inserting some of the good shit in other propeties. The Watchers in Guardians, and The Blue Area of the moon in Captain Marvel.

Does anyone have more detail on what the Fox Fantastic Four deal covers?

I have heard that it covers the 100 Stan and Jack issues, and that Fox has rights to people like Kang, but at the same time, Black Panther and the Inhumans were created in those issues, and both properties have long standing ties to the Fantastic Four.

On the whole, comic book dialogue hasn't been that bad in at least 10 years.

I thought comic book dialogue is always better than their movie counterparts.

What does Batman always say in the movies? "WHERE IS IT!!" "TELL ME WHERE SHE IS!!" "I'M GONNA STOP U BANE!!"

What does Wolverine say in the movies? "Go fuck yourself" "Leave me alone" "Shut up" "*Grunts*" "Come with me if you wanna live"

They never ever says anything interesting like they do in the comics.

The Avengers is probably the closest to actual comic book dialogue, with a lot more jokes and humor.

Sounds like thoroughly mediocre is the ceiling

I feel like the bar is set super high for superhero movies because of the comics. Prime example was after the poor reception of Hulk (2003), they remade the movie in 2008 and Incredible Hulk was only received marginally better than the 2003 version. I remember enjoying Hulk (2003) though

After battling months of bad buzz, "Fantastic Four" emerges as a wounded animal of a superhero movie, only rarely showing flashes of the darker, more emotional breed of Marvel film it's trying to be.
THE. FUCK.?

Well at least it's not bad, it's just meh.

I really liked Chronicle, so I had hope for this. Trailers didn't look great, but I'm still sad it turned out poorly. It's even sadder that this is the super hero movie we get Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan in. So much wasted talent. It could've been great.
